  • In this paper, an integrated radar resource manager for an airborne multi-function radar and a radar-environment simulator are presented. The radar-environment simulator includes target detection/measurement models, a nonlinear tracking filter for the airborne radar and an effective target generation algorithm. The structures and functions of modules in the radar resource manager are established and validated by the radar-environment simulator.

  • The airborne tracking radar is located in front of aircraft or missile and measures and tracks a target motion. The signal processor receives target signals from a receiver using A/D converters, and calculates the target motion, and transfers the data to the aircraft or missile control unit. Since the signal processing system is required to be lightweight and small size as well as high performance to calculate and analyze the received signal, we use high speed DSPs and SMD type components having low power consumption. In this paper, we describe the design concept of signal processing system of the airborne tracking radar.

  • Radars used by air-crafts have two important characteristics; First, they should have a real-time signal processing system finishing signal processing before deadline while getting and processing successive in-phase and quadrature data. Second, they can cover a lot of modes including A2A(Air to Air), A2G(Air to Gound), A2S(Air to Sea), and Ground Map(GM). So the structure of radar signal processing SWs in modern airborne radars are becoming more complicate. Also, the implementation of radar signal processing SW needs to reuse common code blocks between other modes for efficiency or change some of the code blocks into alternative algorithm blocks. These are the reason why the radar signal processing SW framework suggested in this paper is taking advantage of modular programming. This paper proposes an modular framework applicable on the airborne radar signal processing SW maintaining the real-time characteristic using the signal processing procedures for A2G/A2S as examples.

  • Simulation of the strong clutter occurring from the airborne radar is essential in the efficient development and performance evaluation of the aircraft radar system. If the efficient simulation of the clutter can be successful, algorithms can be proved and analyzed and also the performance evaluation is possible in the laboratory environment. Therefore, development and implementation of the airborne radar system can be achieved very economically in the effective way. However, the clutter simulation procedure is very difficult and tedious since the clutter environment changes in numerous ways as it depends on the flight path, direction of antenna beam, reflectivity of the surface, etc.. Thus, in this paper, the general Doppler spectrum model is suggested for efficient simulation of the various clutter environment. Also, it is shown that the various type of clutter in time domain can be generated easily by changing and adjustment of parameters in the general Doppler spectrum model.

  • This paper presents a design, fabrication and the test results of planar active electronically scanned array(AESA) radar prototype for airborne fighter applications using transmit/receive(T/R) module hybrid technology. LIG Nex1 developed a AESA radar prototype to obtain key technologies for airborne fighter's radar. The AESA radar prototype consists of a radiating array, T/R modules, a RF manifold, distributed power supplies, beam controllers, compact receivers with ADC(Analog-to-Digital Converter), a liquid-cooling unit, and an appropriate structure. The AESA antenna has a 590 mm-diameter, active-element area capable of containing 536 T/R modules. Each module is located to provide a triangle grid with $14.7\;mm{\times}19.5\;mm$ spacing among T/R modules. The array dissipates 1,554 watts, with a DC input of 2,310 watts when operated at the maximum transmit duty factor. The AESA radar prototype was tested on near-field chamber and the results become equal in expected beam pattern, providing the accurate and flexible control of antenna beam steering and beam shaping.

  • An Active Electronically Scanned Array(AESA) radar required necessarily as the Fire Control Radar(FCR) of recent fighters has ununiform detection range with regard to scan angle due to scan loss. Although the compensation method of scan loss in an AESA radar with variable dwell time is investigated, the effectiveness of the method in a fighter FCR with multi-function such as search, track, and missile guidance within limited resources should be considered systematically. In this paper, uniform search performance of an AESA radar using variable dwell time with regard to scan angle is derived. We assumed the search load of 50 % for case without changing dwell time in fixed frame time and showed the fighter FCR requirement for multi-function is not satisfied because the search load for the uniform search performance should be increased by about 100 %. On the other hand, in case of increasing the frame time for the uniform search performance and search load of 50 %, degradation of the search performance is shown by 86.7 % compared with the former. Based on these analyses, the effective beam operation strategy on an airborne AESA radar with uniform search performance in whole scan area is described with consideration of frame time, search load and performance as a whole.

  • In this paper, a third-order harmonic mixer is designed using frequency multiplier theory for the microwave airborne radar. Unlike the basic mixer design method, the gate bias voltage, at which the third-harmonic component of the Local frequency (LO) is the maximum, is selected using a frequency multiplier theory to maximize the third-harmonic mixing component at the intermediate frequency (IF). The proposed harmonic mixer was designed and manufactured using a commercial GaAs MESFET device in a plastic package, and it was possible to improve the high conversion loss, circuit complexity, high cost, and manufacturing complexity of the existing microwave mixer. The harmonic mixer using the proposed design method has a -8 ~ -10 dB conversion loss by pumping 11.5 GHz LO with a +5 dBm level when operating from 33.0 GHz to 36.0 GHz and the 1-dB gain compression point (P1dB) of 0 dBm.

  • AESA radar is able to instantaneously and adaptively position and control the beam, and this enables to have interleaved mode in modern airborne AESA radar which can maximize situational awareness capability. Interleaved mode provides two or more modes simultaneously, such as Air to Air mode and Sea Surface mode by time sharing technique. In this interleaved mode, performance degradation is inevitable, compared with single mode operation, and effective resource allocation is the key component for the success of interleaved mode. In this paper, we identified performance evaluation items for each mode to analyze interleaved mode performance and proposed effective resource allocation methodology to achieve graceful performance degradation of each mode, focusing on detection range. We also proposed beam scheduling techniques for interleaved mode.

  • Several algorithms have been developed for the data processing of spotlight synthetic aperture radar (SAR). In particular, the range migration algorithm (RMA) does not assume that illuminating wavefronts are planar. Also, a high resolution image can be obtained by the RMA. This paper introduces an extension of the original RMA to enable a more efficient airborne SAR data processing. We consider more general motion and scene than the original RMA. The presented formulation is analyzed by using the principle of the stationary phase. Finally, the extended algorithm is tested with numerical simulations using the pulsed spotlight SAR.
