  • Foil air bearing, which is a noncontact bearing utilizing viscosity of operating fluid and elastic deformation of foil structure, has several advantages over rolling element bearings in terms of oilless environment, long life, high speed operation, and high temperature application over $500^{\circ}C$ . Recently advanced researches are actively being performed for the application to the extreme temperature such as gas turbines, as well as conventional small turbo machinery. In this paper, the principle of foil air bearing is introduced and a feasibility study to adopt a foil bearing as the turbine bearing of 65 HP turbo shaft engine, which is under development for UAV, is presented.

  • A propulsion and lift shafting system in an air cushion vehicle is flexible multi-elements system which consists of two aeroderivative gas turbines with own bevel gears, four stage lift fan reduction gear, two stage propulsion reduction gear air propellers and high capacity of lifting fans. In addition, the system includes the multi-branched shafting with multi-gas turbine engines and thin walled shaft with flexible coupling. Such a branched shafting system has very intricate vibrating characteristics and especially, the thin walled shaft with flexible couplings can lower the torsional natural frequencies of shafting system to the extent that causes a resonance in the range of operating revolution. In this study, to evaluate vibrational characteristics some analytical methods for the propulsion and lift shafting system are studied. The analysis, including natural frequencies and mode shapes, for five operation cases of the system is conducted using ANSYS code with a equivalent mass-elastic model.

  • ELVs (End-of-Vehicles) in Korea incrasease continusely because of increase of used car. Automobile Shredder Residue (ASR) is final product of ELVs (End-of-Vehicles) after recycling. Automobile Shredder Residue are composed of light and heavy fluffs and soil/dust. In this study, 5 ton/day pilot plant of shaft type has been designed and constructed and 15 times of test run were performed. For the stable operation, operation conditions such as the amount of fed ASR and cokes, air flow and temperature in the gasification melting system have been changed and the composition of the produced gas such as $H_2$, CO and $CH_4$ and air pollution compound including dioxin discharged from the stack have been analyzed.

  • The main goal of the present study is to establish the techniques and methodolgies of turbine performance test through evaluating the objective turbine test piece, and checking the reliability of the self-developed test facility by performing a series of turbine tests under ambient temperature condition. A high speed coupling, a lubrication system and a test bed of the test facility were modified through a series of preliminary test in order to reduce the vibration and oil leakage. The flowrate control of the test facility and data acquisition were accomplished by using a software called "Labview" The measurement of shaft horse power and control of rotational speed according to the conditions of turbine rotation were performed by a separate system. The preliminary evaluation of the measured data suggests that the developed test facility and the test technique can be used reliably for the performance test of turbines with the minor improvement.provement.

  • The present study is to reduce the thermal phenomena and stack effect of nude elevator of the high-rise building used CFD simulation. Since many High-rise buildings used the curtain-wall glass, thermal phenomena and stack effect can easily occur at hot and cold season, respectively. The simulation has been conducted and verified for the effects of the amount of suppling air to the environment of the inside nude elevator shaft. The results of simulations show that the problems due to the thermal and stack effect will be reduced by enforced ventilation or natural ventilation and those will be presented by temperature and velocity profiles and pressure differences.

  • The high temperature superconducting bulk can be used as the bearing of induction motors. This paper presents the fabrication and test results of an induction motor with superconducting bearings using HTS bulks. The bearing had eight hexahedron type YBCO bulks. Height, width and thickness of the HTS bulk were 30mm, 30mm and 10mm, respectively. Single phase induction motor was used to drive the shaft made of aluminum and the rotor of a conventional induction motor. To estimate the performance of the HTS bulk magnetic bearing, no load test, load test and Impact test were carried out. Load tests were performed by using air resistance caused by the shaft-mounted thin cylinder with buckets. Impact tests by axial direction and vertical direction impact showed that the vibration of the shaft gradually decayed. The induction motor with HTS bulk magnetic bearing rotated silently and smoothly throughout the tests. According to the test results, conventional bearings can be replaced with superconducting magnetic bearings made of HTS bulks.

  • Tiling pad journal bearing that has high stability is analyzed about air-lubricated bearing that is usually used to need high precision by using the Direct analysis. The pressure that supports the shaft is occured by the differences between the shaft and pads radii of curvatures. So the characteristics of load capacity for their variable values is important. In this paper the load capacity is compared with some the eccentricity ratio values of0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 0.8. The large load capacity comes from large eccentricity ratio, highbearing number and high preload. But if the preload become high too much, then the shaft makes contact with pads.

  • Based on the results of prototype air-shaft construction, penetration capacity of RBM(Raise Boring Machine) was analyzed and compared with TBM(Tunnel Boring Machine) performance in this study. Utilization, down time, net penetration rate and advance rate were evaluated and compared. By conducting the laboratory tests for rock properties with the analysis of penetration capacity, relation of penetration capacity and geotechnical parameters was studied. The results showed that much more higher value of utilization, however lower value of net penetration rate for RBM was obtained compared to those of TBM. In addition, as the strength of rock penetrated increased, higher value of net penetration rate was obtained contrarily to the results of TBM performance. Finally, new relationship between total hardness and net penetration rate for weak and weathered rock was derived from these results.

  • This paper deals with the static analysis on the permanent magnet synchronous motors(PMSM) using transfer relation theorem according to the shaft materials, and adopts the analytical method to predict the magnetic field distribution and to calculate the electrical parameters by using Transfer Relation Theorem(TRT) in terms of 2-D model in polar coordinates system. In addition, the three types of PMSMS with different types of shafts, which are Iron cored, Air cored, Full-ring permanent magnet type shaft, are suggested in this research, and with those models, not only the analysis on the magnetic field distribution, the estimation of electrical parameters, but also their comparison with Finite Element Analysis(FEA) is processed.

  • Excavation of underground cavern and shaft was proposed for the construction of a ventilation facility in an urban area. A shaft connects the street-level air plenum to an underground cavern, which extends down approximately 46 m below the street surface. At the project site, the rock mass was relatively strong and well-defined joint sets were present. A kinematic block stability analysis was first performed to estimate the required reinforcement system. Then a 3-D discontinuum numerical analysis was conducted to evaluate the capacity of the initial support and the overall stability of the required excavation, followed by a 3-D continuum numerical analysis to complement the calculated result. This paper illustrates the application of detailed numerical analyses to the design of the required initial support system for the stability of underground hard rock mining at a relatively shallow depth.
