  • The aim of this article is to review the general property of the famous traditional Korean paper, "rice straw paper"(Bast-Fiber mixed with straw pulp), and to compare the paper qualities varying with the composition ratio of straw pulp, in order to revive the traditional paper in modem Korea. The experiment was carried out by making first the two different mixture papers, i. e., one is the paper of 50% bast fiber mixed with 50% straw pulp, and the other is the paper of 75% bast fiber with 25% oats straw pulp, and finally the 100% bast fiber paper was made for the purpose of comparison. The qualitative properties of these three kinds of paper with the different mixing ratio of the straw pulp were evaluated, and the findings of the experiment can be summarized as follow: 1. As to the quality aspects of the paper strength like tensile strength, breaking length, elongation, and tear strength, the test proved the 100% bast fiber paper as best, and the 50% mixed paper as the next good one. 2. In aspect of the printing adaptability such as density, opacity, brightness, whiteness, lab colors, air permeability, and roughness, the 50% mixed paper proved to be the best, due to the short cells in the straw pulp. 3. As to the air permeability, the larger ratio of straw pulp was found to be the lesser, and 75% bast fiber with 25% straw pulp mixture paper and the 100% bast fiber one were found 1/5 degree efficient. 4. In terms of the water absorption degree, 100% bast fiber paper was the fastest, but in case of mixture paper, 50% mixed one was a little faster up to the point of 1cm, while the two kinds of mixed ones appear to be almost similar to each other beyond the point. 5. The straw pulp mixed paper, especially the 50% mixed one was evaluated as the highest by the calligraphers who had experienced using the papers in terms of movement and feeling of the caligraphy and painting. In addition, although the 25% mixed paper is judged to be good for book printing because of the strength, the 50% mixed paper can be thought to be more desirable for painting and calligraphy. In conclusion, we will be able to make the quality paper with durability, by mixing the straw pulp with the bast fiber in proper ratio, following the tradition of Korean paper making.

  • CFC(CFC-12, CFC-11 and CFC-113) analytical system for air and water was constructed using a customized purge and trap extraction device and a gas chromatograph with an electron capture detector. Sampling methods of air and water for CFCs were also established. The analytical system was experimentally optimized to result in reproducibilities of triplicates less than 2% for current air samples and less than 5% for groundwater samples with CFC-12 concentration of 160 to 180 pg/kg, and verified with respect to the CFC system in USGS, which showed analytical results were in agreement within 10%. CFCs in air were monitored at three sites over 19-month period in the central part of South Korea, and the result indicates no significant local sources of CFCs in those areas. For groundwater in Jeju Island, CFCs were measured over a year with a two-month interval. The time-series data showed seasonal fluctuations which could be interpreted by the effect of recharge pulse derived from large amount of rainfall during monsoon period with a few month delay, which indicates high permeability of basaltic rocks in Jeju Island.

  • The coefficients of the hot-air and freeze dried garlic isotherms and the critical water activities of these were estimated to be 0.85-0.94 by the linear regression and 0.58-0.60 by the sensory evaluation and ${\Delta}E$ value. Water adsorption rate(K) of hot-air dried garlic packaged with $48{\mu}m$ low density polyethylene(LDPE) decreased from $0.12g\;H_2O/100g/day\;to\;0.093g\;H_2O$/100g/day with decreasing the package dimension from $0.051m^2\;to\;0.029m^2\;at\;40^{\circ}C$ and 75% RH, and that of freeze dried one decreased from $0.17g\;H_2O/100g/day\;to\;0.12g\;H_2O$/100g/day as the filling weight increased from 50g to 10g in the package of $0.051m^2$. Shelf-life of hot-air dried garlic packaged with $80{\mu}m$ LDPE were 99days at $40^{\circ}C,\;283day\;at\;30^{\circ}C\;and\;455\;days\;at\;15^{\circ}C$ in the 75% RH. The differences of water contents between predicted data with water vapor permeability of the conventional method and experimental data were 0-1.5% in the water content range of around 13-18%, but about 2 in the water content range of around 8-11%.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the physiolosical responses and subjective wear sensation to the clothes with different cellulose composition. The experimental garments were four types of cellulosic fabrics, respectively composed of $100\%$-cotton, $100\%$-Rayon, cotton/Flax 85/15, and rayon/Flax 85/15 (weft blended), were sewn in blouses with half-length sleeves. Four healthy women were chosen for this experiment. The condition of the experimental room were in two environments: Temp., $25{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, R.H. $60{\pm}3\%$ and Temp., $30{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, R.H. $70{\pm}3\%$, and air velocity was maintained at 0.25 m/sec. The results are as follows. 1) At $25^{\circ}C$, rayon blouse showed the pleasantest feeling because of its excellent humidity sensation and tactile sensation. At $30^{\circ}C$, rayon and flax blended blouse showed most comportable sensation. In both environments, blouse of $100\%$ cotton showed the least pleasant because of high vapor pressure inside the blouse and bad tactile sensation. 2) Vapor pressure inside the blouse and tactile sensation play the most impotant role in comfort. Consequantly the blouse made of $100\%$-cotton which bring low air permeability, moisture regain and water vapor permearbility showed more unpleastness than rayon blouse because it raises temperature, relative humidity and vapor pressure inside the blouse under the hot circumstances In the conditions with much sweat, rayon and flax blended blouse with high stiffness increases comfort better than $100\%$ rayon because the former prevents sticking to the skin.

  • 4-Hydroxybenzaldehyde, a phenolic compound found in a variety of natural sources, was previously shown to contain anti-inflammatory and related anti-angiogenic and anti-nociceptive activities. The present work was designed to assess some pharmacological activities of 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (DHD), an analogue of 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde. DHD exhibited a significant inhibition in the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) angiogenesis, and its $IC_{50}$ value was $2.4\;{\mu}g/egg$. DHD also contained in vivo anti-inflammatory activity using acetic acid-induced permeability and carrageenan-induced air pouch models in mice. In the air pouch model, DHD showed significant suppression in exudate volume, number of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and nitrite content. DHD showed an anti-nociceptive activity in the acetic acid-induced writhing test in mice. It also suppressed enhanced production of nitric oxide (NO) and elevated expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophage cells. It was able to slightly decrease the level of reactive oxygen species in the stimulated macrophages. DHD at the used concentrations couldn't modulate the viabilities of RAW264.7 cells. Taken together, like 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, DHD contains anti-angiogenic, anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive activities.

  • The vertical distribution of pore water pressure in the highly saturated sand layer under the oscillating water pressure is studied theoretically and experimentally. By the experiments it is shown that the water pressure acting on the sand surface propagates into the sand layer with the damping in amplitude and the lag in phase, and that the liquefaction, the state that the effective stress becomes zero, occurs under certain conditions. These experimental results are explained fairly well by the same theoretical treatment as for the ground water problems in the elastic aquifer. The main characteristics of liquefaction clarified by the analysis are as follows: 1) The depth of the liquified layer increases with the increase of the amplitude and the frequency of the oscillating water pressure. 2) The increase of the volume of the water and the air in the layer increases the liquified depth. Especially the very small amount of the air affects the liquefaction significantly. 3) The liquified depth decrease rapidly with the increase of the compressibility coefficient of the sand. 4) In the range beyond a certain value of the permeability coefficient the liquified depth decrease with the increase of the coefficient.

  • Lidocaine compounds have widely been used as local anesthetics. Regarding the molecular mechanism for anesthesia by lidocaine, it is proposed that lidocaine molecules penetrate to the hydrophobic region of cell membrane and expand the membrane volume, producing a change in protein conformation that blocks sodium permeability or lidocaine molecules directly adsorb into lidocaine receptor in the protein channel without expanding the cell membrane. But these proposals have never been proven experimentally. In this study, the expansion of cell membrane by lidocaine compounds was investigated by employing lipid monolayer at the air/water interface as the mimetic system of cell membrane. It was found that oil-soluble lidocaine contracted the area/molecule of lipid in the monolayer of phosphatidyl choline, sphingomyelin, DS-PL95E and lipoid, but expanded the monolayer of phosphatidyl ethanolamine only in a certain range of mixing ratios. On the contrary, water-soluble lidocaine-HCl salt expanded the monolayers of all lipids used in this study.

  • The innerliner for a tire has excellent impermeability, air retention and good flex properties. The innerliner offers a role to improve performance parameter, such as air retention and tire durability that is of praricular importance for commercial tires. In order to improve the gas barrier properties of a innerliner, most of the innerliner rubbers, such as a halogenated butyl rubber(HIIR), brominated poly(isobutylene-co-isoprene)(BIIR), brominated polyisobutylene-co-paramethylstyrene(BIMS) are used as nanocomposites with nano fillers such as silicates, graphite etc. Innerliners based on nanocomposites may allow gauge adjustments and permeability reductions with potential improvement in tire durability. This article discusses potential innerliner permeablity reduction and compounding parameters on the properties of nanocomposite based innerliners.

  • The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate the effect of mineral admixtures, such as fly ash, blast furnace slag powder, meta kaolin and silica fume, on the basic properties and durability of crushed sand shotcrete, selecting a series of shotcrete mixtures with a variable admixture. Compressive strength increased as the content of mineral admixtures increased, specially it was the most effective when using meta kaolin both at sample specimen and core after shotcreting. Rapid chloride ion permeability test and sulfuric acid resistance test showed that both durability increased as the substitute rate of mineral admixture increased. In air void analysis with image analysis, the targeted the spacing factor and specific surface were not satisfied because air-entrained agent was not used.
