The synoptic condition of clear-air turbulence (CAT) events occurred over South Korea is investigated, using the Regional Data Assimilation and Prediction System (RDAPS) data obtained from the Korea Meteorological Agency (KMA) and pilot reports (PIREPs) collected by Korea Aviation Meteorological Agency (KAMA) from 1 Dec. 2003 to 30 Nov. 2008. Throughout the years, strong subtropical jet stream exists over the South Korea, and the CAT events frequently occur in the upper-level frontal zone and subtropical jet stream regions where strong vertical wind shears locate. The probability of the moderate or greater (MOG)-level turbulence occurrence is higher in wintertime than in summertime, and high probability region is shifted northward across the jet stream in wintertime. We categorize the CAT events into three types according to their generation mechanisms: i) upper-level front and jet stream, ii) anticyclonically sheared and curved flows, and iii) breaking of mountain waves. Among 240 MOG-level CAT events reported during 2003-2008, 103 cases are related to jet stream while 73 cases and 25 cases are related to the anticyclonic shear flow and breaking of mountain wave, respectively.
Single-phase convection and partial nucleate boiling in free-surface and submerged jet impingements of subcooled water ejected through a 2-mm-diameter circular pipe nozzle were investigated by local measurements. Effects of jet velocity and nozzle-to-imping-ing surface distance as well as heat flux on distributions of wall temperature and heat transfer coefficients were considered. Incipience of boiling began from far downstream in contrast with the cases of the planar water jets of high Reynolds numbers. Heat flux increase and velocity decrease reduced the temperature difference between stagnation and far downstream regions with the increasing influence of boiling in partial boiling regime. The chance in nozzle-to-impinging surface distance from H/d=1 to 12 had a significant effect on heat transfer around the stagnation point of the submerged jet, but not for the free-surface jet. The submerged jet provided the lower cooling performance than the free-surface jet due to the entrainment of the pool fluid of which temperature increased.
The water jet impingement cooling with boiling is one of the techniques to remove heat from high heat flux equipments. The configuration of surface roughness is one obvious condition of affecting the performance on heat transfer in nucleate boiling, The present study investigates the water jet impinging single-phase convection and nucleate boiling heat transfer for the effect of surface roughness to enhance the heat transfer in free surface and submerged jet. The distributions of the averaged wall temperature as well as the boiling curves are discussed. Jet velocities are varied from 0.65 to 1.7 m/s. Surface roughness by sand blast and sand paper varies from 0.3 to 2.51 ${\mu}m$ and cavity shapes on surface are semi-circle and v-shape, respectively The results showed that higher velocity of the jet caused the boiling incipience to be delayed more. The incipient boiling and heat transfer increase with increasing surface roughness due to a large number of cavities of uniform size.
An experimental investigation is presented to study the effect nozzle spacing, jet to plate spacing and Reynolds number on the local heat transfer to normally upward impinging submerged circular water jets on a flat heated surface. Nozzle arrays are a single jet(nozzle dia. = 8 mm), a row of 3 jets(nozzle dia. = 4.6 mm, nozzle spacing = 37.5 mm) and a row of 5 jets(nozzle dia. = 3.6 mm, nozzle spacing = 25 mm), and jet to plate spacing ranging from 16∼80 mm(H/D = 2∼10) is tested. Reynolds number based on single jet exit condition is varied 30000∼70000($V_o$ = 3∼7 m/s). Except for the condition of H/D = 10, the average Nusselt number of multi-jet is higher than that of single jet. For H/D = 2, average Nusselt number is increased by 50.3∼82.5% for a row of 3 jets and by 52.9∼65.2% on a row of 5 jets when compared to the average Nusselt number on the single jet.
Experiment were carried out to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of an aluminum foam block as a porous heat sink on a heat source by a vertical air jet impingement that can be applied for electronics cooling. The performance of the aluminum foam heat sink was evaluated by the convective heat transfer coefficient on the heat source. At a fixed porosity, pore density ($\beta$) of the foam and Reynolds number Re were varied in the range of $\beta$a=10, 20, 40 PPI(Pore Per Inch) and $850\leqRe\leq25000$. A nozzle diameter and the nozzle-to-plate spacing were also varied. It was found that the convective heat transfer was enhanced by the aluminum foam heat sink with lower pore density due to relatively intensified flow through the foam block. The aluminum foam block with much reduced weight shows slightly better performance with larger Nusselt number, compared with the convectional heat sink.
The effect of fuel composition and coaxial air on the nitrogen oxide emission index was studied in a non-premixed turbulent jet flame. Validity of experimental setup and methodology is checked. The NOx emission trend is similar with previous works in hydrogen flame, but it's not well in $H_2/CO$ flame. Normalized EINOx scaling with modified $S_G$ applying near-field concept was conducted. Experimental data don't collapse single correlation curve, but partially same trend is observed in all cases.
A heat exchanging system employing the impinging air jet is still widely used In the various fields due to its inherent merits that include the easiness in engineering applications and the high heat and/or mass transfer characteristics. The purpose of this study is to investigate the enhancement of heat transfer and flow characteristics by placing a turbulence promoters in front of heat exchanging surface. In this study, a series of circular rods are placed at the upstream of a flat plate heat exchanger that is located at potential core region(H/W=2) of a two-dimensional impinging air jet. Heat transfer enhancement is achieved by inserting turbulence promoter that results in the flow acceleration and disturbance of boundary layer. The average Nusselt number of the flat plate with the turbulence promoters is found to be around 1.42 times higher than that of the flat plate without the turbulence promoters. Based on the results of flow visualization with a smoke wire, it is confirmed that the heat transfer enhancement is caused by the flow separation and disturbance of boundary layer by inserting the turbulence promoter.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the enhancement of heat transfer without additional external power in the case of rectangular air jet impinging vertically on the flat heating surface. In an attempt to enhance the heat transfer rate in two-dimensional impinging jet, the technique used in the present study was placement of square rod bundles as a turbluence promoter in front of the heat transfer surface. The effects of the clearance between the flat plate and square rod, and the nozzle exit velocity on the heat transfer characteristics have been investigated experimentally. The results obtained through this study were summerized as follows. High heat transfer enhancement was achived by means of flow acceleration and thinning of boundary layer by inserting rods in front of the heating flat plate. The smaller the clearance between rod and heating plate was, the larger heat transfer effect became. Average Nusselt number reached maximum at $Re=5.76{\times}10^4$ and C=1㎜ and the enhancement rate of heat transfer became maxium at this condition with the enhancement ratio as high as about 1.427 when normalized by the flat plate value. The correlating equation of average Nusselt number and Reynolds number was obtained, which is $\bar{N}uo=1.324{\cdot}Re^{0.459}{\cdot}(C/A)^{-0.034}$.
The impinging air jet system is still being used in the various fields with its inherent merits, that is, the easiness in engineering application and high heat transfer coefficients at stagnation point. The purpose of this study is augmentation of heat transfer without additional power in the rectangular air jet which impinges vertically to the heating surface. As a method of passive heat transfer augmentation in a two-Dimensional impinging jet, the transverse-repeated surface roughness of square cross-section is used. This paper deals with the experimental study on the characteristics of heat transfer at the x-direction in between nozzle exit and heating surface of flat plate, and that of ribbed plate. And this study also investigates the effect of square rib widths. The integral average heat transfer coefficient of ribbed plate is about 2.2 times larger than that of flat plate.
The detachment stability characteristics of syngas $H_2$/CO jet attached flames were studied. The flame stability was observed while varying the syngas fuel composition, coaxial nozzle diameter and fuel nozzle rim thickness. The detachment stability limit of the syngas single jet flame was found to decrease with increasing mole fraction of carbon monoxide in the fuel. In hydrogen jet flames with coaxial air, the flame detachment stability was found to be independent of the coaxial nozzle diameter. However, velocities of appearance of liftoff and blowout velocities of lifted flames have dependence. At lower fuel velocity range, the critical coaxial air velocity leading to flame detachment increases with increasing fuel jet velocity, whereas at higher fuel velocity range, it decreases. This increasing-decreasing non-monotonic trend appears for all $H_2$/CO syngas compositions (50/50~100/0% $H_2$/CO). To qualitatively understand the flame behavior near the nozzle rim, $OH^*$ chemiluminescence imaging was performed near the detachment limit conditions. For all fuel compositions, local extinction on the rim is observed at lower fuel velocities(increasing stability region), while local flame extinction downstream of the rim is observed at higher fuel velocities(decreasing stability region). Maximum values of the non-monotonic trends appear to be identical when the fuel jet velocity is normalized by the critical fuel velocity obtained in the single jet cases.
