In case of metal insulation, which is produced by stacking stainless steel sheets and air layers in a multi-stack manner at a specific thickness, insulation performance will be evaluated based on thermal transmittance rather than the intrinsic physical properties of each material such as thermal conductivity. However, there is no standard for measuring thermal transmittance targeted for non-homogeneous insulation which is used in relatively high temperature conditions such as a power station. In this study, the thermal conductivity of homogeneous insulation acquired by the standardized guard hot plate method and the thermal conductivity of homogeneous insulation measured by the newly developed performance tester were compared to verify the confidence level of the tester. As a result, thermal conductivity acquired by the newly developed thermal transmittance tester was about 6% higher than the thermal conductivity measured by the existing guard hot plate method under the anticipated service temperature conditions.
The vortex tube is a simple device which splits a compressed gas stream into a cold stream and a hot stream without any chemical reactions. Recently, vortex tube is widely used to local cooler of industrial equipments and air supply system. In this study, the insulation effect of surface on the efficiency of vortex tube was performed experimentally. The experiment is carried out for nozzle area ratio of 0.194, diameter ratio of cold end orifice of 0.6 and input pressure ranging from 0.2Mpa to 0.5Mpa. The purpose of this study is focused on the effect of surface insulation of vortex tube with the variation of cold air mass flow ratio. The results indicate that the temperature difference of cold and hot air are higher about 12% and 30% than that of not insulated vortex tube respectively. Furthermore, for the insulated vortex tube, the similarity relation for the prediction of cold end temperature as the function of cold air mass flow ratio and input pressure is obtained.

This study was to investigate the thermal insulation of clothing ensembles, including padded jackets with two different filling types. Thermal insulation of the ensemble was measured using a thermal manikin in four conditions (10℃, 30% RH and 20℃, 50% RH with an air velocity of less than 0.15 m·s-1 and 1.5 m·s-1). Ten males participated at 10℃ and 30% RH with an air velocity of less than 0.15 m·s-1 and 1.5 m·s-1. The results showed that the polyester ensemble was warmer than a goose down ensemble in 0.15 m·s-1 conditions and the goose down ensemble had greater thermal insulation than the polyester ensemble at an air velocity of 1.5 m·s-1. Thermal insulation was reduced 5-7% when temperature decreased 10℃ and reduced 40-50% when air velocity reached 1.5 m·s-1 for both ensembles. Thermal insulation of the ensemble in human trials decreased more than a thermal manikin at 10℃, 30% RH with an air velocity of 1.5 m·s-1. Lower temperatures and human trials were effective in identifying the properties of the thermal insulation by filling types even though there were restrictions on the general application because of two types of a clothing ensemble.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the weight of seasonal garments worn by Korean women in their daily lives and thermal insulation. We selected a total of 121 garments(13 kinds of Under garments, 51 Upper garments, 32 Lower garments, 15 Headgear, 10 Gloves Footgear) based on our previous survey using questionnaire and interview. Thermal insulation of single garment was measured with a thermal manikin. Also we measured garment weight, covering area, thickness, air permeability on the each garment(chamber air temperature: $21.5{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$, humidity: $50{\pm}5%R.H.$ air speed: 0.15m/s). The results are as follow: The very strong positive correlation(r=0.905, p<.01) was recognized between the weight of single garment and thermal insulation. The regression equation of thermal insulation can be represented as follows: Thermal Insulation(clo)=$0.03+0.0004{\times}Garment$ Weight(g)($r^2$=0.820, SEE =0.059). There are significant differences in the thermal insulation and garment weight by season and garment type(p<.05). The each garment category's thermal insulation and garment weight has as follows: Under garment(0.06clo, 89g), Blouse Shirt T-shirt(0.13clo, 200g), Cardigan Sweater Vest(0.14clo, 287g), Coat Jacket Jumper(0.41clo, 890g), Skirt(0.16clo, 276g), Trousers(0.20clo, 438g), Headgear(0.03clo, 102g), Gloves Footgear(0.03clo, 33g).

This study investigates on the relationship between total load which is caused by infiltration and insulation thickness against compensation effect. As the result of experiment, the PVC(Synthetic resins sash) window frame in airtightness is superior to the AL(Aluminum sash) window frame. In this study, as the increasing of insulation thickness in reference building does not reduce significantly cooling load, the compensation effect due to airtightness against infiltration is very small. But the compensation effect against infiltration can be closely related with heating load. Therefore, the proper thermal insulation thickness can be needed respect to cooling and heating load.

Procedures for estimation of insulation thickness for a horizontal pipe for condensation control or personnel protection has been investigated, parallel to the previous work of a vertical wall case. Parameters include pipe diameter, emissivity, thermal conductivity, and operating temperatures. The results indicated that the surface emissivity plays a very important role in the design of insulation, specially for the case of high temperature application with low Bi. The effect of surface radiation in such case could be up to 65% of the total. Required insulation thickness for the surface temperature control increases as pipe diameter increases and as surface emissivity decreases. Adequate revision of specifications or standards to include newly invented insulation materials with high emissivity has been also suggested.

This study aim to find an appropriate window for classrooms to provide proper sound insulation against aircraft noise and to achieve this goal, measurements were taken of the sound insulation performance of windows with various thicknesses of inner air space and sound absorption materials in the inner air spaces. As a result of this study the improvement of the sound insulation performance of windows(single, double and triple window) was shown through the analysis and the measuring of windows with these characteristics. These results may be applied to the manufacture of window frames and provide basic data for the improvement of the sound insulation performance of windows.

Using air as an insulator due to its low heat transfer coefficient has been studied and has been widely commercialized to save energy in the field of thermal insulation technology. In this study, we analyzed the heat insulating effect of hollow silica nanoparticles mixed in non-uniform size, and the maximum heat insulating efficiency of these particles given the limited number of particles that can be mixed with a medium such as paint. The hollow silica nanoparticles were synthesized via a sol-gel process using a polystyrene template in order to produce an air layer inside of the particles. After synthesis, the particles were analyzed for their insulation effect according to the size of the air layer by adding 5 wt % of the particles to paint and investigating the thermal insulation performance by a heat transfer experiment. When mixing the particles with white paint, the insulation efficiency was 15% or higher. Furthermore, the large particles, which had a large internal air layer, showed a 5% higher insulation performance than the small particles. By observing the difference in the insulation effect according to the internal air layer size of hollow silica nanoparticles, this research suggests that when using hollow particles as a paint additive, the particle size needs to be considered in order to maximize the air layer in the paint.

A new method for the poling of piezoelectric ceramics with an air insulation medium in stead of silicon oil is described. A similar variation of electromechanical coupling coefficient $K_t$, for an air medium is observed in comparison to that of the material poled by the conventional poling method using a silicon oil medium. Different poling parameters such as dielectric constant $\varepsilon^T$ and frequency deviation ${\Delta}f$ are studied as well as the influence on the aging effect. The required poling factors to achieve the optimal piezoelectric characteristics are electric field, 2 kV/mm, temperature $100^{\circ}C$, and poling time 30 Min. From this result electric field 3 kV/mm atmosphere airs there being will be able to use with the polarization insulation medium about the piezoelectric material, confirmed.
