Numerical Study of the Optimization of Combustion and Emission Characteristics of Air-Staged Combustion in a Pulverized Coal-Fired Boiler (석탄 화력 보일러의 공기 다단공급방식을 통한 연소 및 배기 배출물 특성 최적화에 관한 수치해석 연구)

  • Air-staged combustion is known to be one of the techniques of NOx reduction. The objective of this study is to determine the optimal ratio of air flow distributed for CCOFA and SOFA; at this optimal ratio, the combustion and exhaust emission characteristics of a pulverized coal-fired boiler are maintained at a satisfactory level. A numerical investigation was performed at various airflow ratios of 16.7/83.3%, 25/75%, 50/50%, 75/25%, and 83.3/16.7%. An inert gas was considered as a substitute for air to isolate the effects of the cooling process and chemical reaction on NOx reduction; during NOx reduction in air-staged combustion, both the effects typically occur simultaneously. The results of our study show that the optimum condition, under which the maximum NOx reduction and highest boiler efficiency can be obtained, corresponds to the equal splitting of the over-fire air between CCOFA and SOFA.

  • In this study, we investigated characteristics of a gas flow and a combustion property during the combustion of a RDF in a pyrolysis melting incinerator with disposal rate of 30 kg/hr. The RDF was pyrolyzed through the pyrolysis chamber at $600^{\circ}C$ of the chamber surface without oxygen condition. The pyrolysis gas was injected in the combustion chamber. It was burned by means of the staged combustion that was injecting secondary and tertiary air in the combustor. We measured the temperatures and the gas components in the combustion chamber while maintaining the air-fuel ratio of 1.3. Finally, we confirm that additional air injection, secondary and tertiary air ratio, was the most important factor to reduce NOx.

  • A modified VIStA (vortex inertial staged air) burner was developed and used in a once-through-type boiler. For safety, the combustion in this burner is of the non-premixed type. An air damper is installed to control the distribution of air to each combustion chamber. The effects of the air-fuel ratio and air distribution on NOx formation were investigated. The newly modified VIStA burner gives NOx reduction effect by maximum 20% in the combustion chamber of a boiler, while it yields more uniform flame than the conventional burner.

  • Four coal sources that had different ash contents were evaluated in a drop tube furnace (DTF). Combustion experiments were conducted by using several sources with different particle sizes and excess air ratios under air-staging conditions to determine the optimized combustion conditions of high-ash coal, with an emphasis on the combustion efficiency and NOx emissions. The results show that the higher ash content results in a large amount of carbon remaining unburned, and that this effect is dominant when the largest particle size is used. Furthermore, the ash content of coal does affect the Char-NOx concentration, which decreases with the particle size. The results of this study suggest that an air-staged system can be useful to reduce the NOx emissions of high-ash coal and that control of the air stoichiometric ratio of the primary combustion zone (SR1) is effective for reducing NOx emissions, especially by considering unburned carbon contents.

  • A modified VIStA (Vortex Inertial Staged Air) burner has been developed and applied to a once-through type boiler. The secondary air is supplied through a swirler instead of nozzles, which stabilizes the flame and reduces carbon monoxide (CO) emissions. However, the modification increases the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx). To balance emissions of the two pollutants, a divided flame was adopted. An air damper was installed to control the distribution of air to each combustion chamber, and three types of flame dividers were studied. The effects of the air-fuel ratio and combustion load on the NOx formation were investigated. The divided flame was found to reduce the NOx emission up to 25%, while keeping the CO to less than 10 ppm.

  • In the present paper we studied experimentally fundamental optimization of oxygen enriched pyrolysis melting incinerator, Characteristics of this system was confirmed dealing with the gas flow and combustion properties for the inside secondary air injection. The experiment setup has a disposal rate of 30kg/hr which was measured by the inside temperature and gas. Along with above experiments, the three-dimensional computation was employed to analyse the combustion fluid dynamics and gas residence time. Equations for turbulence and heat - transmission as well as chemical reactions were solved by using common codes. The experimental combustion chamber was composed of staged combustion types structure for reducing NOx. Finally, it was verified that the control of the secondary air and air ratio of thermo stack were important. In the computational analysis, it showed reasonable agreement with the experimental results regarding the temperature and discharged gas concentration.

  • Vortex Inertial Staged Air (VIStA) burner for an once-through type boiler has been restored to the original premixed type to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission. The premixed version yields additional de-NOx effect by 20 ppm. The flame is formed closer to the wall at the 1st stage combustion chamber compared with the non-premixed one. The combustion characteristics are more sensitive to the air distribution for the premixed type, which necessitates proper optimization.

  • The objective of this study was to obtain basic data for the staged combustion toward the NOx reduction in coal combustion. Combustion and NOx emission/reduction were investigated by using DTF. NOx emission was decreased with decreasing air ratio and with increasing volatile content in coal. In particular, effective NOx reduction was achieved at high temperature at the onset of combustion with fuel rich condition.

  • The effects of NOx reduction by new staged fuelling system in a small scale combustor (6.6 ㎾$_{T}$) have been investigated using propane gas flames laden with ammonia as fuel-nitrogen. The variables which had the greatest influence on NOx reduction were temperature, reducing stoichiometry( related to main combustion zone stoichiometry, air fraction and returning fuel fraction ) and residence time. The best NOx reduction was observed at the reburning zone stoichiometry of 0.85. In terms of residence time of the reburning zone, NOx reduction was effective when burnout air was injected at the Point where the reburning zone has been already established.d.

  • Development of the low NOx heating boiler was strongly asked due to severe air pollution and the large number of boilers in korea. Compactness of the commercial boiler was also important because of low manufacturing cost and easy installation. In this study. newly developed compact low NOx burner, using turbulent gas diffusion combustion with multi-staged air supplies and multiple fuel nozzles, was investigated. Comparison study of the new burner was performed between experimental results and computational analysis. Commercial computational fluid dynamic(CFD) program named CFX-5.6 was used for numerical analysis of the low NOx burner inside the test combustor. Comparisons of experiment data and numerical result were performed under various equivalence ratio and fuel flow rate.
