A Study on the Flow Characteristics of Liquid Phase in Air-Water Model (Air-Water 모델에서 액상의 유동특성에 관한 연구)

  • In the present study, the gas injection system based on air-water model was designed to investigate the flow characteristics of liquid phase. A PIV system was applied to analyze the flow pattern in a ladle which gas stated to rise upward from the bottom. Gas flow is one of most important factors which could feature a flow pattern in a gas injection system. As the gas injected into the liquid, the kinetic energy of bubble transfer to liquid phase and a strong circulation flow develops in the liquid phase. Such a flow in the liquid develops vortex and improve the mixing process. Due to the centrifugal force, circulation flow was well developed near both wall sides and upper region respectively. Increasing gas flow was helpful to remove dead zone but, weak flow zone still exists in spite of the increasement of gas flow rate.

An Experiment on Particle Collection and Gas Removal in a 2-Stage Electrostatic Wet Scrubber (2단 정전식 세정집진기의 집진 및 가스제거 특성)

  • DOS and NaCl aerosol particles were used to determine collection efficiencies of a 2-stage electrostatic wet scrubber with respect to particle size. The DOS and NaCl aerosols have geometric mean diameters of 0.1-3.0 urn, geometric standard deviations of $1.1{\sim}1.8$ and total number concentrations of $450{\sim}2,400\;particles/cm^3$. The tested operating variables for the electrostatic wet scrubber included air velocity and water injection rate. It was shown from the experimental results that particle collection efficiencies increased in the submicron particle size range when different polarities were applied on the water nozzle and corona wire, respectively. This increase in the collection efficiency is attributed to strong electrostatic attraction between the negative water droplets and positive submicron particles. The collection efficiencies also increased when water injection rate was increased or air velocity was decreased. Meanwhile, the pressure drop across the wet scrubber decreased by 90% compared with the existing mechanical wet scrubber. Finally, ammonia gas was used to determine gas removal efficiencies. It was observed that the gas removal efficiencies increased when the air velocity was decreased or the water injection rate was increased.

The Air-stripping Process Conjugated with the Ultrasonic Treatment to Remove TOC in Groundwater around the LPG Underground Storage Cavern (탈기법과 초음파 처리법을 연계한 LPG 지하공동저장소 주변 오염지하수 내 TOC 제거)

  • In order to develop an air-stripping based remediation process to remove the TOC (Total Organic Carbon) in groundwater around the underground LPG storage cavern, the laboratory scale experiments at various conditions (change of air injection volume and temperature, the application of ultrasonic treatment, etc.) for two types of groundwater (initial TOC concentration of 608 mg/L and 153 mg/L, respectively). From results of experiment, as the air injection rate for stripping into groundwater increased from 2 L/min to 11 L/min and as the air-stripping time increased from 1 hour to 24 hour, the TOC removal efficiency of air-stripping increased. However, the TOC concentration of treated groundwater was higher than the discharge tolerance limit (100 mg/L) even after 24 hour stripping at the maximum air injection rate of 11 L/min. The main compounds of the TOC in groundwater were identified as methanol and propane and the long stripping time (more than 24 hour) was needed to separate the methanol from groundwater because of the affinity between water and methanol. At 20℃ and 4 L/min of air injection, the TOC removal efficiency increased to 59.1% after 24 hour air-stripping. When the temperature of groundwater increased to 30℃ and 40℃, the TOC removal efficiency increased up to 80.0% and 82.8%, suggesting that more than 24 hour air-stripping at 40℃ is needed to lower the TOC concentration to below 100 mg/L and the additional TOC removal process as well as the air-stripping is necessary. When the temperature increased to 60℃ and the ultrasonic treatment was conjugated with the air-stripping, the TOC removal efficiency increased to 87.8% within 5 hour stripping and the final TOC concentration (72.4 mg/L) was satisfied with the TOC discharge tolerance limit. The TOC removal efficiency for groundwater having low TOC concentration (153 mg/L) also showed similar removal efficiency of 89.7% (the final TOC concentration: 18.9 mg/L). Results in this study supported that the air-stripping conjugated with the ultrasonic treatment could remove successfully the TOC in groundwater around the underground LPG strorage cavern.

Study of the Dehydrogenation Characteristics of Pt-Sn Catalysts by Propane Pulse Injection (프로판 펄스 주입에 의한 백금주석촉매의 탈수소반응 특성 연구)

  • The results of the catalytic reaction by pulsed injection of reactants are useful for studying the initial reaction characteristics in the case of many coke invloved reactions. The dehydrogenation characteristics of alumina supported platinum tin catalysts were investigated by pulsed injection of propane. The yield of propylene was maximized when the reduction time of propane injection catalyst was $550^{\circ}C$. Raman analysis showed that the amount of coke was very small when PtSn (4.5) catalyst was used and the short contact time was simulated by propane pulse injection. n order to differentiate the degree of dispersion of platinum, PtSn (4.5) catalyst was sintered at $900^{\circ}C$ with hydrogen, and then the temperature of air - redispersion was varied and propane pulse was injected. As a result, conversione and yield were the highest when air-redispersion temperature is $600^{\circ}C$. The lower the air-redispersion temperature, the higher the selectivity. As the tin content in the platinum catalyst increased, the propane conversion was lowered, but the selectivity to propylene increased and the yield increased. From this, it can be seen that the tin-added platinum catalyst is less active than the platinum catalyst from the beginning of the reaction, which is less affected by coke. The dehydrogenation reaction by the propane pulse injection shows a higher conversion rate than the result of continuous injection due to the formation of COx, and the amount of coke is very small. Decrease in selectivity due to the formation of COx can be reduced by increasing the reduction temperature and time.

  • Air-water two phase natural circulation flow in the T-HERMES (Thermo-Hydraulic Evaluation of Reactor cooling Mechanism by External Self-induced flow)-1D experiment has been evaluated to verify and evaluate the experimental results by using the RELAP5/MOD3 computer code. The RELAP5 results have shown that an increase in the coolant inlet area leads to an increase in the water circulation mass flow rate. However, the water outlet area does not effective on the water circulation mass flow rate. As the coolant outlet moves to a lower position, the water circulation mass flow rate decreases. The water level is not effective on the water circulation mass flow rate. As the height increases in the air injection part, the void fraction increases. However, the void fraction in the upper part of the air injector maintains a constant value. An increase in the air injection mass flow rate leads to an increase in the local void fraction, but it is not effective on the local pressure.

  • The concurrent injection of cosolvent and air, a cosolvent-air (CA) flood was recently suggested for a dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) remediation technology. The objectives of this study were to elucidate the DNAPL removal mechanisms of the CA flood and to quantify mass transfer rate coefficients during CA flooding. DNAPL removal mechanisms were examined by evaluating the effects of air flow rate and DNAPL solubility and visually documented at a pore-scale. Two serial processes, immiscible displacement and dissolution, were experimentally and visually documented during CA flooding. Mass transfer rate coefficients (K) were computed from the data showing PCE saturation versus time. Results showed that CA floods exhibited higher K values than cosolvent floods without concurrent air injection.   • In the present paper we studied experimentally fundamental optimization of oxygen enriched pyrolysis melting incinerator, Characteristics of this system was confirmed dealing with the gas flow and combustion properties for the inside secondary air injection. The experiment setup has a disposal rate of 30kg/hr which was measured by the inside temperature and gas. Along with above experiments, the three-dimensional computation was employed to analyse the combustion fluid dynamics and gas residence time. Equations for turbulence and heat - transmission as well as chemical reactions were solved by using common codes. The experimental combustion chamber was composed of staged combustion types structure for reducing NOx. Finally, it was verified that the control of the secondary air and air ratio of thermo stack were important. In the computational analysis, it showed reasonable agreement with the experimental results regarding the temperature and discharged gas concentration.

  • This paper considers the age of air in a ventilated space with multiple supply inlets. The local mean age of air at a point from one supply inlet is different from those from the other supply inlets. It is the purpose of the present paper to investigate theoretically the relations between the LMA's from each supply and overall combined LMA whether or not to trace the origins of supply air. Transient concentration distributions are calculated with a step-up injection of tracer gas at each supply inlet, and at both inlets simultaneously. The steady state concentration with a continuous tracer injection at a supply inlet works as a weighting factor for the corresponding LMA in calculating the average overall LMA from multiple inlets.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the optimum operating conditions of the air injection type onion peeling device which could be attached to a prototype onion peeler. An onion, stem and root was cut and some vertical line was dug in 1 mm depth on the skin, was put on the two parallel rollers. The diameters of the rollers were 105 mm and the ratio of peripheral velocity was 3:2, and moved by a geared motor. Air from the nozzle with high pressure and velocity was jetted to the rotating onion on the revolving rollers, and then the skin of the onion was stripped. On the test, the rolling characteristics of the experimental materials were measured. The effective peeling conditions were, the number of digging line on the skin of the onion was 4, and the air jet pressure was above 392.3 kPa(4.0 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$) when the peripheral velocity was at 2.4 m/s. On these conditions, time requirement to peel an onion was less than 2 sec.

INVESTIGATION OF RUNNING BEHAVIORS OF AN LPG SI ENGINE WITH OXYGEN-ENRICHED AIR DURING START/WARM-UP AND HOT IDLING

  • This paper experimentally investigates the effects of oxygen-enriched air (OEA) on the running behaviors of an LPG SI engine during both start/warm-up (SW) and hot idling (HI) stages. The experiments were performed on an air-cooled, single-cylinder, 4-stroke, LPG SI engine with an electronic fuel injection system and an electrically-heated oxygen sensor. OEA containing 23% and 25% oxygen (by volume) was supplied for the experiments. The throttle position was fixed at that of idle condition. A fueling strategy was used as following: the fuel injection pulse width (FIPW) in the first cycle of injection was set 5.05 ms, and 2.6 ms in the subsequent cycles till the achieving of closed-loop control. In closed-loop mode, the FIPW was adjusted by the ECU in terms of the oxygen sensor feedback. Instantaneous engine speed, cylinder pressure, engine-out time-resolved HC, CO and NOx emissions and excess air coefficient (EAC) were measured and compared to the intake air baseline (ambient air, 21% oxygen). The results show that during SW stage, with the increase in the oxygen concentration in the intake air, the EAC of the mixture is much closer to the stoichiometric one and more oxygen is made available for oxidation, which results in evidently-improved combustion. The ignition in the first firing cycle starts earlier and peak pressure and maximum heat release rate both notably increase. The maximum engine speed is elevated and HC and CO emissions are reduced considerably. The percent reductions in HC emissions are about 48% and 68% in CO emissions about 52% and 78%; with 23% and 25% OEA, respectively, compared to ambient air. During HI stage, with OEA, the fuel amount per cycle increases due to closed-loop control, the engine speed rises, and speed stability is improved. The HC emissions notably decrease: about 60% and 80% with 23% and 25% OEA, respectively, compared to ambient air. The CO emissions remain at the same low level as with ambient air. During both SW and HI stages, intake air oxygen enrichment causes the delay of spark timing and the increased NOx emissions.
