  • This study aims at examining the design factors of the air diffuser system in a particular view of field conditions, and thus improving the procedures currently applied to design the system. First, the CFD model is built for an air diffuser system suitable for field conditions of real reservoirs. Then, the design factors, including destratification number, destratification radius and efficiency of the air diffuser system, are analyzed after a series of simulations over various field conditions. The result shows successful correlations of design factors with DN at the condition, and they lead to estimate of the destratification radius and efficiency of air diffuser system based on DN. It is finally concluded that the design factors are improved such that the air diffuser system is suitable for the field conditions of dam reservoirs.

  • In this study, three different supply diffuser types(desktop, floor and ceiling) are compared in view of their ability to distribute supply air to the workstation breathing zone. The measurements on the age of air and the air change effectiveness using the tracer gas method are carried out to analyze the ventilation performance for provision of fresh air between the diffusers. The desktop diffuser type could deliver air directly to the occupants breathing zone with a high degree of effectiveness. The measured local air change effectiveness of the desktop diffuser in the breathing zone was usually 1.13 to 1.23 times greater than that of ceiling and floor diffusers. When the minimum outside air change rate as specified using ASHRAE Standard 62R is supplied with a desktop diffuser type, the volume of outside air can be reduced 13 to 23%, resulting in a commensurate in ventilation energy use.

  • An interesting of desktop air-conditioning system is the Personal Environmental Module(PEM) System. The PEM system allows the occupant to choose the desired temperature, air volume and direction of the discharged air. In this study, the measurements on the age of air and the air change effectiveness, using the tracer gas method, are carried out to analyze the ventilation performance for provision of fresh air near the breathing zone by the PEM. The relations between the PEM for optimal control and other factors related to indoor air quality, and the ventilation for the PEM are examined. Also, three different supply diffuser types(desktop, floor and ceiling) are compared in view of their ability to distribute supply air to the workstation breathing zone. The desktop diffuser type could deliver air directly to the occupants breathing zone with a high degree of effectiveness. The minimum local age of air was measured in the breathing zone, which is directly supplied with air from the PEM diffusers, and the measured local air change effectiveness of the desktop diffuser in the breathing zone was about 1.13 to 1.23 times greater than that of the ceiling and floor diffusers. When the minimum outside air change rate as specified using ASHRAE Standard 62R is supplied with a desktop diffuser type, the volume of outside air can be reduced 13 to 23%, resulting in a commensurate in ventilation energy use.

  • The underfloor air distribution system has been attracting to architects and building owners as one of valuable system for the renovated and newly office building. In this paper, we discussed the thermal stratification profile of pressurized plenum underfloor air distribution(UFAD) according to indoor setting temperature, diffuser number, diffuser type. For this, the space of office building(H corp.) is selected for measuring the air volume of underfloor diffuser and vertical temperature profile. As a result, the thermal stratification profile is influenced by the number and type of the underfloor diffuser and thermal storage character of the underfloor. Whereas indoor setting temperature have a lower significant impact on thermal stratification.

  • Air Discharge pattern and even temperature distribution is critical for a successful lower temperature air distribution system, which would supply lower temperature air than normal HAVC system. Selection of appropriate diffuser is the most critical element in completing lower temperature system.

  • Diffuser design is crucial for water-chilled heat storage. Its impact on the system performance is more significant for the underground tank due to inherent limit on the aspect ratio and tank shape. The effect of diffuser shape on the performance of the water-chilled heat storage is numerically investigated. Three dimensional simulation has been conducted for fully incorporating the complex diffuser shape and the non-symmetric tank shape. Mixing at the inlet of the diffuser depends on the inlet Reynolds number, Froude number and the diffuser shape. Three types of the diffuser shape and the broad range of Reynolds number (Re=400, 800, 1200) and Froude number (Fr=0.5, 1.0, 2.0) are examined. The performance of the heat storage tank is evaluated by the thermocline thickness which is reverse to the degree of stratification. The radial regulated plate diffuser, which is the suggested diffuser shape in this study, shows the lowest thermocline thickness in the condition considered.

  • In order to improve air quality of indoor environment, studies of the underfloor air distribution (UFAD) system for application in buildings are actively in progress based on temperature and air flow distribution. However, although the age of air is the major evaluation parameter, there has been very little study on this parameter for the UFAD system. In this study, we investigated the age of air to reach the air diffuser, which is installed at the bottom of the interior by the UFAD system. Computational fluid dynamics simulations showed no regular pattern to the maximum value of the age of air in accordance with air flow rate and the velocity at air diffuser. These factors can be deduced from air movement by considering that air emitted from air conditioners was rotated according to the bottom shape of the floor, and then, the age of air in the rotation center was increased. The average age of air of internal interior was reduced considerably as the flow velocity at the underfloor air diffuser was increased from 0.5 m/s to 1.0 m/s However, the age of air was not substantially affected with change in the air volume. Moreover, when the flow velocity at the underfloor air diffuser was higher than 1.0 m/s, the age of air showed no significant difference with change in air volume or height of measurement. These results imply that indoor air quality is more substantially influenced by flow velocity than air volume, and the appropriate flow velocity is 1 m/s or more.

  • This study is concerned with development of air supply system in 250kW MCFC fuel cell system. The turbo blower is decided as an air supply system to increase the efficiency of fuel cell system. The turbo blower consists of an impeller, two vaneless diffuser, a vaned diffuser and a volute. The cascade diffuser is used to raise the efficiency of turbo blower. An aerodynamic design was done by applying the repeating design procedure including a meanline design, a 3D geometry generation and fluid dynamic calculation. It is confirmed from meanline and 3D flow analysis results that the operating range is enough and design requirements are successfully achieved. The performance test results were also included in this paper.

  • The purpose of this paper is to obtain design method of air-distribution system. Air-distribution system is composed of blower, duct, diffusers and measuring equipment. The air-flow rate from each diffuser is not equal. The air-flow rate is calculated with the combined equations which are Bernoulli's equation, continuity equation and minor loss equations. Inlet condition and outlet condition are adapted in each duct system. Then square difference between function of maximum air-flow rate and minimum air-flow rate is used as an object function. Area of diffuser and velocity are established as constraints. To minimize the object function, the optimization method is used. After optimization the design variables are selected under satisfaction of constraints. The air-distribution system is calculated again with the result of optimized design variable. It is shown that the air-distribution system has the equal air-flow rate from diffusers.

  • Room air flow and temperature distribution was numerically investigated where a PAC(personal air conditioning) system was installed. The calculated results were compared with those from experiments. The effects of the important operation parameters such as the air flow rate, velocity, and temperature at the diffuser on the thermal performance of the system were studied. The possibility of energy saving using the PAC system was verified from the results, It was shown that the warm air from the diffuser could not spread over the whole task area if the inlet temperature was too high.
