Nondestructive Determination of Sugar Contents in Shingo Pears with Different Temperature

  • The affect of surface temperatures of fruits on spectrum which measures actual sugar contents was observed. PLSR was applied to develop the sugar content evaluation system that was not affected by temperature. The reflected spectrum was used at the wavelengths of 654 and 1052nm with the separation distance of 2.5nm. To increase the conformance of a model using unknown samples, let the minimum value of PRESS be an optimum factor. 71 Shingo pears stored in a refrigerator were left in a room temperature for a while and these temperatures and reflected spectrums were measured. Reflected spectrums were measured at the wavelengths of 654 and 1052nm, 3 samples in one second. To measure these at different temperatures, the experiment was repeated hourly and four times. Starting temperatures of 2-3 were increased up to 17. The total number of measured spectrum was 284. To develop a sugar content evaluation system model using measured reflected spectrum, three groups of samples were considered. First group had 51 samples at 14 and second group had 141 samples with lower or higher temperatures than 14. Third group had 155 samples with well distributed temperatures. Other samples were used as validations to ensure the conformance. Measuring the sugar contents of samples with surface temperatures other than 14 were difficult with PLS model I, developed by using a sample temperature of 14. If the sugar contents were compensated using samples' temperatures, results of prediction would be close to the expected results and it would be one of the most important factors to develop this system. PLS models I and II could compensate the temperature but the precision would not come up to the standard. High precision was expected by using samples with wide ranges of temperatures and sugar contents. Both models showed the possibility of an improvement of a sugar content evaluation system disregarding the temperature. For practical use of a system, selecting samples should be done carefully to reduce the effect of the temperature.

Criteria for Determining Working Area and Operating Cost for Long-Term Lease of Agricultural Machinery

  • Purpose: This research suggests a method of establishing criteria for working area and operating cost for a long-term lease of agricultural machinery. Methods: Eight crops were selected-three food crops and five open-field vegetables-and agricultural machines used for sowing, transplanting, and cultivation in dry-field farming were analyzed. Results: The break-even acreage for agricultural machinery under a long-term lease was found to differ by agricultural machine, ranging from 1.0 to 5.8 ha. In terms of arable land area, the break-even acreages for harvesting machinery and transplanters were 15.6 to 26.1 ha and 6.1 to 8.6 ha, respectively. The working area lessees should secure was divided into two cases: (1) 2.0 to 11.6 ha when leasing individual agricultural machines (sowing and transplanting) for a long-term period, and (2) more than 10 ha when farmers who cultivate beans, potatoes, garlic, onions, and so on lease sowing and transplanting machines as a set. When agricultural machinery was leased for a long term, the operating cost and working time were reduced by 27.6 to 74.4% and 2.5 to 21.6%, respectively, indicating considerable effect. Conclusions: A long-term lease project needs to be promoted to overcome the limitation of short-term leases of agricultural machinery. The local government should lead this project and facilitate the mechanization of dry-field farming. The department in charge of agricultural machinery lease projects needs to set the working area to cover the rate and maintenance cost for farmers who lease agricultural machinery for the long term.

Operation status of Agricultural Machinery Rental Service and its Improvement Plan (농업기계 임대사업 운영실태 및 개선방안)

  • In order to reduce the farmers' burden of purchasing agricultural machinery and address the shortage of farm workers, the government have been promoting agricultural machinery rental service since 2003. Despite of political purpose, the outcome of agricultural machinery rental service turned out to be adverse, high cost and low efficiency, by the pork barrel projects operated from some municipalities. Therefore, this study was aimed to improve the efficiency of agricultural machinery rental service by analyzing the operation status of agricultural machinery in local government. A questionnaire survey was conducted at 134 cities and counties in terms of rent type, management personnel, business budget, agricultural machinery ownership, rental performance, use rates, operational problems, and improvement plan. This study found that some agricultural machinery rental offices were only focused on the short-term rental service, which caused the increasing number of operating personnel, required facilities/equipment. The short-term rental service has a limitation for promoting the mechanization rate in dry-field farming. Therefore, it should be carried out along with the long-term rental service which a lessee maintains and manages agricultural machinery directly. Furthermore, the reasonable number of agricultural machinery based on regional circumstances should be considered to meet rental demand and collect the minimal rental fee for purchasing new agricultural machinery and replacing old ones.

Efficiency Plan for Agricultural Machinery Rental System of Local Government (지자체 농업기계 임대사업의 효율화 방안)

  • Purpose: This study was performed in order to improve problems and to seek the efficient operating plan by surveying and analyzing the actual status of operating the agricultural machinery rental business supported by the government. Method: The data was collected through two times of survey targeting lease business operators and the leasing business reports published for the past 3 years ('08~'10) 120 cities and counties. Results: As a result of surveying 120 cities and counties nationwide of operating the agricultural machinery rental business, 96% of agricultural machinery rental businesses were indicated to be operated in the form of short-term rent for about 1~3 days centering on small-sized agricultural machinery and attachment for upland crop. As for the unit number of possessing rental agricultural machinery and the purchase cost, it was indicated to be greatly reduced the agricultural machinery for rice farming and to be expanded into upland crop whose mechanization is insufficient. The annual rental days ('10) are 9.5 days/unit, thereby being a little insufficient. Rental fee for 1 day is 0.2~0.8% of the initial purchase cost of agricultural machine, thereby being greatly lower compared to 2.0% (annually 10-day rent) of the proper rents, resulting in being demanded improvement. Conclusions: To be continuously driven the rental business of agricultural machinery with having the ability to propagate, it is judged to be likely to necessarily collect optimum rental fee in consideration of rental days as well as increasing the use days per unit by buying the agricultural machinery, which is secured the rental demand, and by possessing the reasonable unit number.

Effect of plant growth regulators on soybean and red bean seedling growth

  • In recent years the growth rates of world agricultural production and crop yields have slowed because of rapid urbanization but the agriculture mechanization implies the use of various power sources and improved farm tools and equipment to enhance the efficiency of utilization of various crop input. Therefore the current study was conducted to investigate the growth characteristics of seedlings treated with plant growth regulators for the production of seeds suitable for mechanical formulations of soybeans and red beans. The seeds of Uram bean and Arary red bean were sown in 128 well plug tray as the testing varieties. Three growth inhibitors such as 0.05% hexaconazole, prohexadion-calcium, and 0.1% diniconazole were treated and fifteen representative plants were collected from each treatment at 2, 5, 7, 13, 16, 17, 19, and 20 days interval after treatment. The collected plants were examined for the growth atributes such as plant height, root length, leaf area and chlorophyll. The growth promoter was treated at the 13th day after treatment with growth inhibitor and treated with 0.1% concentration of Pomina ($GA_{4+7}$ 1.8% + 6-benzylaminopurine 1.8%) and Nonaji (gibberellic acid 2% + $GA_{4+7}$ 2%). Initially the growth data was recorded to examine the effect of growth inhibitor, while after treatment with growth promoters, the growth attributes were recorded at 4th and 7th day. As a result of measuring the growth parameter of soybean, the inhibitory effect was shown in the aerobic treatment at the ground level at the 7th day after treatment. At the 4th day of growth promoting agents treatment, the stimulation effect of non - treated plants was greater than that of formalin treatments. As a result of measuring the growth attributes of red bean, In the latter part of the growth, at the 4th day after the growth promoter treatment. This study was able to confirm the effective growth regulators and treatment periods for each crop, and it was possible to control the growth of seedlings. Based on these results, it can be expected that the basis of seedling production technology of crops which is necessary for sowing and transplantation mechanization of agriculturle field can be established.

  • 인도네시아 전역에 2,470만㏊의 저습지(Pasang Surut)가 있으며, 그중 잠재 농경지는 558만㏊ 수준이다. 저습지 벼농사지대는 우기 기간에 강우의 배수가 어렵고 토양산도가 극히 낮아 농작물재배에 제약이 매우 크다. 인도네시아의 저습지는 배수조건이 좋은 해안저습지, 우기에 강의 수위가 높아지면 배수가 곤란하게 되는 강변저습지, 강 하류의 수위가 40cm로 낮아질 때까지 기다려서 영농을 시작하는 내륙저습지로 구분할 수 있다. 특히 배수가 어렵고 우기 계절 내내 담수상태로 인하여 농업기계가 거의 이용되지 못하고 있으며, 농로가 없어 각종 운반작업이 인력에 의존하고 있다. 이와 같은 저습지의 특성상 이 지역에 적합한 농기계 개발 및 기계이용기술의 개발이 요구된다.   • Agriculture in Swaziland is the most important sector of the economy from the stand point of export earning, rural employment and dependency for family food. But, inspite of 65.5 percent of the household being busy in food production for family consumption in Swaziland, the import bill of food and live animals is rising from E119.7268 million in 1987/90 (An.St.Bul.1988) . A typical farm size, based on holding's growing crops, is only 1.93 ha which may prohibit owning a four wheel tractor for farm operations. The traditional hand tools are just not efficient and comfortable to operate in order to exploit full potential of the land. There are over 120.000 draught animals which have potential to be utilized in farming. The two wheel-tractor is another energy source which can be used for many farm-operations.

  • Heating floor is the most profitable system of air heating at poultry houses. THe tubes with heating elements inside are laid into the layer of concrete. To prevent lossese of heat penetration deep into the ground the layer of isolation material is laid below the tubes . The depth of isolation laying in every point of the heating floor may be calculated according to the author's formula using the data of temperature on the floor surface and the tube, the distance between tow nearest tubes, and the distance between the tube and the floor surface. Technological investigations allow to estimate the optimal density for greese and ducks when they are bred on the heatuing floor.

  • 우리 식생활에서 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있는 배추는 최근 식생활패턴 변화에 따라 외식 소비와 여성의 사회활동 증가, 가공원료용 수요 및 김치수출 증가 등으로 신선배추수요가 연중 평준화되어 안정적이고 지속적인 공급을 필요로 하고 있다. 그러나 배추재배 기계화는 경운정지, 비닐피복 및 방제작업을 제외하고는 대부분의 작업을 인력에 의존하고 있어 노동생산성 저하 및 생산비 증가의 원인이 되고 있다. 특히, 배추의 생산비 절감 및 안정적인 공급을 위해서는 전체 노동투하시간의 43%를 차지하고 있는 정식, 수확 및 제초작업 등 인력의존도가 높은 작업에 대한 기계화가 시급한 실정이다.   • A simple disposable thick-film potentiometric strip has been developed and evaluated for hydroponics application. The strip consisted of low ion-selective electrodes (ISE) fabricated by screen-printing technology. The electrochemical responses of ion sensors for nitrate, ammonium, potassium, and magnesium were measured with specially designed 16-channel low voltage signal transducers. The analytical characteristics of the sensors were comparable with those of conventional ISE sensors. The thick-film sensors exhibit linear relationships over five concentration decades. The concentration of N $O_3$ - ion in standard solution can be determined by direct potentiometric measurements without any conditioning before measurements. However, measurement of $K^{+}$, N $H_4$$^{+}$, and $Mg^{2+}$ ionic concentrations in nutrient solutions seems not feasible.
