Effects of Defaunation on Fermentation Characteristics, Degradation of Ryegrass Hay and Methane Production by Rumen Microbes In Vitro When Incubated with Plant Oils

  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of defaunation (removal of live protozoa) on fermentation characteristics, degradation of ryegrass hay and $CH_4$ (methane) production by rumen microbes when incubated with plant oils (SO, sunflower oil and LO, linseed oil) in vitro. Sodium lauryl sulfate (0.000375 g/ml) as a defaunation reagent was added into the culture solution and incubated anaerobically up to 24 h at $39^{\circ}C$. pH from defaunation was increased for all treatments from 6 h incubation times (p<0.01-0.001) compared with those from fauantion. Concentration of ammonia-N from defaunation is higher than that from faunation at 3 h (p<0.001), 12 h (p<0.05) and 24 h (p<0.001) incubation times. Defaunation decreased (p<0.01-0.001) total volatile fatty acid concentration at all incubation times. Molar proportions of $C_2$ (acetate, p<0.05-0.001) and butyrate (p<0.01-0.001) were also decreased by defaunation at all incubation times. Molar proportion of $C_3$ (propionate), however, was increased by defaunation at all incubation times (p<0.001). Thus the rate of $C_2$ to $C_3$ was decreased by defaunation at all incubation times (p<0.001). Defaunation decreased ED (effective degradability) of dry matter (p<0.001) and ED of neutral detergent fiber (p<0.001) of ryegrass hay. Defaunation decreased total gas, $CH_4$ production, $CH_4$ % in total gas and $CH_4/CO_2$ at all incubation times (p<0.001). Oil supplementation decreased total gas (p<0.05-0.001), $CH_4$ production (p<0.001) and $CH_4$ % in total gas (p<0.001) compared with control at all incubation times. The result of this study showed that defaunation combined with oil supplementation may cause an alteration of microbial communities and further medicate the fermentation pattern, resulting in both reduction of degradation of ryegrass hay and $CH_4$ production. No difference, however, was observed in all the examinations between SO and LO.

Influence of Temperature on the Bacterial Community in Substrate and Extracellular Enzyme Activity of Auricularia cornea

  • Temperature is an important environmental factor that can greatly influence the cultivation of Auricularia cornea. In this study, lignin peroxidase, laccase, manganese peroxidase, and cellulose in A. cornea fruiting bodies were tested under five different temperatures ($20^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$, $35^{\circ}C$, and $40^{\circ}C$) in three different culture periods (10 days, 20 days and 30 days). In addition, the V4 region of bacterial 16S rRNA genes in the substrate of A. cornea cultivated for 30 days at different temperatures were sequenced using next-generation sequencing technology to explore the structure and diversity of bacterial communities in the substrate. Temperature and culture days had a significant effect on the activities of the four enzymes, and changes in activity were not synchronized with changes in temperature and culture days. Overall, we obtained 487,694 sequences from 15 samples and assigned them to 16 bacterial phyla. Bacterial community composition and structure in the substrate changed when the temperature was above $35^{\circ}C$. The relative abundances of some bacteria were significantly affected by temperature. A total of 35 genera at five temperatures in the substrate were correlated, and 41 functional pathways were predicted in the study. Bacterial genes associated with the membrane transport pathway had the highest average abundance (16.16%), and this increased at $35^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$. Generally, different temperatures had impacts on the physiological activity of A. cornea and the bacterial community in the substrate; therefore, the data presented herein should facilitate cultivation of A. cornea.

Distribution Characteristics of Weeds and Vegetation Types in Cnidium officinale Field (천궁밭 발생잡초 및 군락특성)

  • The present research was carried out in order to investigate the occurrence of problematic weed species in Cnidium officinale Makino. Field in South Korea. Total 53 sites of the 3 different regions in S. Korea were investigated from May to October, 2014. In Cnidium officinale fields, the identified weeds were distributed in 35 families and 99 species. Total 5 communities that consist of Commelina communis, Eleocharis kuroguwai, Persicaria vulgaris, Chenopodium album-Acalypha australis, and Galinsoga ciliata dominated the appearance. The weeds occurred in Cnidium officinale fields were divided into three groups in principal component plot analysis (PCA). It was observed that in control weeds plots; 20 plants of Cnidium officinale fresh weight is 739.9 g while the uncontrolled plots have no Cnidium officinale plants. The current investigation could be useful for estimation of future weeds occurrence, weed flora dynamics and establishment of weed control methods in Cnidium officinale fields in Korea.

  • This paper aims to clarify the process of institutionalization of customary land ownership along with the expansion of coffee plantation in Dak Lak Province, Vietnam. Vietnam is the second-largest coffee exporter in the world. Most of the coffee areas are concentrated in Dak Lak-a province of commercial agricultural production. The expansion of coffee plantation in Dak Lak have brought a severe competition of land resources, and resulted in the transition of land ownership scheme from customary commons by ethnic minorities to those of exculsive private assets which is secured by the state. Institutionalization of customary land ownership in Dak Lak, however, was differently happened according to the geography from the center of state power as well as the value of land resources. In this paper, the authors argue that institutionalization of customary land ownership in Dak Lak was a result of compromising between statemaking process in the frontiers and "everyday resistance" of ethnic minorities, comparing 3 geographically different ethnic minorities' communities.

Diversity and Abundance of Bark Beetles (Coleoptera, Curculionidae: Scolytinae and Platypodinae) in Deadwoods of Quercus serrata and Carpinus laxiflora (졸참나무와 서어나무 고사목의 나무좀의 다양성과 풍부도)

  • This study was conducted to elucidate the patterns of occurrence of bark beetles on deadwoods of Quercus serrata Fisher and Carpinus laxiflora Blume which are expected to increase due to climate change. The survey was carried out at the LTER site in Gwangneung forest in Gyeonggi Province in 2007-2008. Bark beetles were collected using emergence traps and attraction traps (funnel trap and window trap). A total of 408 beetles belonging to 12 species in two subfamilies were collected. Platypus koryoensis (Murayama) was the most abundant species. P. koryoensis and Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford) occurred mainly in deadwoods of Q. serrata. All other species, except two rare species, occurred commonly in deadwood of both tree species. Species richness and abundance of bark beetles were higher in the attraction traps than in the emergence traps, and higher in Q. serrata than in C. laxiflora. These indexes were higher in classes I-II or I-III than in classes III-IV or IV of deadwood. Bark beetle communities differed according to years and showed a little difference between tree species.

Applications of the Participatory Learning Process in Health Promotion (건강증진을 위한 참여 학습의 적용 사례)

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to develop a participatory learning process and apply it to community empowerment for health promotion. Methods: The participatory learning sessions were composed of three stages according to the modified Freirean model of empowerment education. Stage 1 of generating themes (listening stage) was replaced with a community health forum. Stage 2 of problem-posing was executed via a two-session small group brainstorming discussion for selecting priority community health problems and strategies to solve them. Stage 3 of act-reflect-act, the implementation of the chosen strategies, is ongoing. We tested the feasibility of the participatory learning processes in the pilot programs for health education. Then, 14 Myeon (or Dong) Health Committee members used them in Health Plus Happiness Plus projects for community empowerment to achieve health equity in Gyeongsangnam-Do, Korea. Results: In the pilot program for feasibility, more than 80% of the 95 participants gave positive responses to evaluation questionnaires after three or four participatory learning sessions. Health Committee members successfully selected various strategies relevant to their communities with facilitation, but without any teaching from outside professionals. Conclusions: We successfully applied the participatory learning process to health promotion. However, more studies are warranted to evaluate its long-term applicability.

Analysis on the Flora and Vegetation of Geumsan and Gisa Stream Located in Chunchengnam-do (충청남도 금산천과 기사천의 식물상 및 식생분석)

  • This study was carried out to offer the ecological data for restoring and maintaining a local stream by analyzing the vegetation and flora in Geumsan Stream and Gisa Stream, Geumsan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, Korea. As a result of comparison of realities of land use near Geumsan Stream and Gisa Stream, in Geumsan Stream, the ratio of residential areas, commercial and business places, and places of transportation facilities was high. With these types of land use aggregating densely in the center, farmlands were formed on both sides. On the other hand, in Gisa Stream, farmlands were distributed evenly in all sections. As a result of comparison of flora of the two streams, Geumsan Stream had a total of 166 taxons including 53 families, 131 genuses, 139 species, 23 varieties, and 4 forms, and Gisa Stream had a total of 142 taxons including 42 families, 111 genuses, 116 species, 21 varieties, and 5 forms. As a result of calculation of the Naturalization Index and Urbanization Index, the indices were analyzed to be 23.5% and 12.1% in Geumsan Stream and to be 21.8% and 9.7% in Gisa Stream, respectively. Hence, Geumsan Stream showed higher figures in both evaluation indices than those of Gisa Stream. In addition, as a result of calculation of the Actual Urbanization Index, which is the index supplemented by considering the species pool and area, it could be known that Geumsan Stream (0.0285) was urbanized more than Gisa Stream (0.0107) by about 2.7 times. A total of 18 plant communities were classified in Geumsan Stream and Gisa Stream. In Geumsan Stream, 14 vegetation types were identified, and it was analyzed that there are various vegetation types including Phalaris arundinacea community, Zoysia japonica community, Phragmites japonica-Phalaris arundinacea community, etc. evenly distributed. 11 vegetation types were identified in Gisa Stream, and it was examined that Phragmites japonica community is widely distributed in all sections.

Calling for Collaboration to Cope with Climate Change in Ethiopia: Focus on Forestry

  • In Ethiopia, climate change and deforestation are major issues hindering sustainable development. Local Ethiopian communities commonly perceive an increase in temperature and a decrease in rainfall. Meteorological data shows that rainfall has declined in southern Ethiopia, and spring droughts have occurred more frequently during the last 10-15 years. The frequently occurring droughts have seriously affected the agriculture-dominated Ethiopian economy. Forests can play an important role in coping with climate change. However, deforestation is alarmingly high in Ethiopia, and this is attributed mainly to agricultural expansion and fuel wood extraction. Deforestation has led to a decrease in various benefits from forest ecosystem services, and increased ecological and environmental problems including loss of biodiversity. To resolve the issues effectively, it is crucial to enhance climate change resilience through reforestation and various international collaborations are urgently needed. To continue collaboration activities for resolving these issues, it is first necessary to address fundamental questions on the nature of collaboration: does collaboration aim for a support-benefit or a mutual benefit situation; dividing the workload or sharing the workload; an advanced technology or an appropriate technology; and short-term and intensive or long-term and extensive?. Potential collaboration activities were identified by sectors: in the governmental sector, advancing governmental structure and policy, enhancing international collaborations and negotiations, and capacity building for forest restoration and management; in the research and education sector, identifying and filling gaps in forestry and climate change education, capacity building for reforestation and climate change resilience research, and developing bioenergy and feed stocks; and in the business and industry sector, supporting conservation based forestry businesses and industries, while promoting collaboration with the research and education sectors. It is envisaged that international collaboration for enhancing climate change resilience through reforestation will provide a strong platform for resolving climate change and deforestation issues, and achieving sustainable development in Ethiopia.

Forest Vegetation Structure around Marugeum (Ridge Line) Area in Deogyusan Region, Baekdudaegan (백두대간 덕유산권역 마루금 주변의 산림식생구조)

  • The Baekdudaegan, spanning around 701 km from Hyangrobong to Cheonwangbong of Mt. Jirisan in South Korea, is rich in biodiversity and known as the main ecological axis of the Korean Peninsula. The Neuljae-Yuksimnyeong section of Marugeum in the southern part of the Baekdudaegan, particularly Mt. Deogyusan, is an area in which various types of vegetation appear depending on the environmental characteristics. The aims of this study were to investigate the current vegetation status at the Neuljae-Yuksimnyeong section of the Baekdudaegan and to provide basic data to aid systematic conservation and management through future classification of forest vegetation types. A vegetation survey was conducted using 637 plots from May to October 2019. Vegetation-type analysis showed that the vegetation units could be classified as a Quercus mongolica community group divided into seven communities: the Abies koreana community, Sanguisorba hakusanensis community, Persicaria hydropiper community, Quercus variabilis community, Quercus dentata community, Cornus controversa community, and Quercus mongolica community. The A. koreana community was subdivided into the Dryopteris expansa group and Picea jezoensis group. The Q. variabilis community was also subdivided into the Q. dentata group and Q. variabilis typical group. We concluded that special management plans for distinctive forest vegetation, including subalpine vegetation, grass or herb vegetation, and agricultural vegetation, should be prepared urgently to aid ecosystem preservation and enhancement.

  • Traditionally, like many people in mountain region of the Himalaya, the Lwang communities depend on mix of subsistence agriculture, animal husbandry, and seasonal migrant labor for their livelihoods. These traditional systems are characterized by low productivity, diverse use of available natural resources (largely for home consumption), limited markets, and some aversion for innovation. The potential to generate wealth through commerce has largely been untapped by these mountain residents and thus is undervalued in local and national economies. Introduction of organic tea farming is a part of Lwang community's several initiatives to break the vicious poverty cycle Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) played facilitating roles in all their efforts since beginning. In five years, the tea plantation emerged as a new means for secured a livelihood. This study aims to analyze the current practices in tea farming both in terms of farm management and soil nutrient status(technical) and the prosperity of the tea farmers (social). The technical aspect covers the soil and tea leaf analysis of various nutrients contents in the soil and tea leaf. Originally, the technical aspect of the study was not planned but later during the consultation with the advisor it was taken into consideration which added value to the research study. The sample were collected from different locations and analyzed on the field itself. The other part of the study i.e. the social aspect was done through questionnaire survey and focus group discussion. the tea farming provided them not only a new opportunity but also earned an identity in the region. This initiative was undertaken as a piloting measure. Now that the tea is in production with processing unit established locally, more serious consideration has to be given for better yield and economic prosperity. This research finding will help the community to analyze their efforts and make correction measures in tea garden management and application of fertilizer. It is also expected to fill up the gaps of knowledge and information required to reduce economic stresses and enhance capacity of farmers to make the tea farming a sustainable and beneficial business.
