  • Adsorption characteristics of Ni(II), Co(II) and Ag(I) ions on the Amberite IRN 77 cation exchange resin have been studied to suggest the guide-line for the optimum operation of demineralization process in primary coolant system during the shut-down period of pressurized water reactor(PWR). The adsorption mechanism of each metal ion, Ni(II), Co(II) or Ag(I) ion, on a cation exchange resin was well coincided with Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption and treatment capacities of $H^+$-form resin were higher than those of $Li^+$-form resin. In the continuous ion exchange process for the solution of multi-component system, the selectivity of the resin was in increasing order of Ni(II)${\approx}$Co(II)>Ag(I). In addition, the increase of the flow rate decreased the treatment capacity of the resin as well as the slope of the breakthrough curve.

X-ray Absorption Spectra Analysis for the Investigation of the Retardation Mechanism of Iodine Migration by the Silver Ion Added to Bentonite (벤토나이트에 첨가한 은 이온에 의한 아이오딘 이동 저지 메커니즘 규명을 위한 X-선 흡수 스펙트라 분석)

  • Most of iodine was captured by the block when NaI solution flowed through a bentonite block sorbed silver to retard the migration of iodine released from high-level radioactive wastes. In order to understand in detail the mechanism for the retardation of the iodine by the silver ion, X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) and Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) spectra of the silver sorbed bentonite before and after the contact with iodide were compared with those of AgO, $Ag_2O$ and AgI as references. This examination suggests that the silver ion sorbed on the bentonite is desorbed, and then it retards the migration of iodine by forming the cluster of AgI precipitate.

  • Water-soluble phosphate glasses containing Ag or Cu ion were prepared through melting process. Then the powdered glass samples were dissolved in D.I. water at room temperature with changing the dissolution time. In terms with the glass composition, dissolution characteristics, bactericidal effects and cytotoxicities were investigated. Dissolved amounts increased uniformly with dissolution time, and the dissolution rate was higher for ternary glass than for binary glass and with less metal oxide amount. And the dissolution rate of the glass with Ag ion was higher than that with Cu ion, and the bactericidal effect of the glass with Ag ion was also greater. Solution with more than 25 ppm of Ag was observed to have strong cytotoxicity to L929, and solutions of lower Ag concentration or with Cu seemed to have little cytotoxicity.

Chimie Douce Reaction to Layered High-$T_c$ Superconducting / Super-ionic Conducting Heterostructures

  • We have developed new type of superconducting-superionic conducting nanohybrids, $Ag_xI_wBi_2Sr_2Ca_{n-1}Cu_nO_y$ (n=1 and 2) by applying the chimie douce reaction to the superconducting Bi-based cuprates. These nanohybrids can be achieved by the stepwise intercalation whereby the $Ag^+$ ion is thermally diffused into the pre-intercalated iodine sublattice of $IBi_2Sr_2Ca_{n-1}Cu_nO_y$. According to the X-ray diffraction analysis, the Ag-I intercalates are found to have an unique heterostructure in which the superionic conducting Ag-I layer and the superconducting $IBi_2Sr_2Ca_{n-1}Cu_nO_y$ layer are regularly interstratified with a remarkable basal increment of ~7.3$\AA$. The systematic XAS studies demonstrate that the intercalation of Ag-I accompanies the charge transfer between host and guest, giving rise to a change in hole concentration of $CuO_2$ layer and to a slight $T_c$ change. The Ag K-edge EXAFS result reveals that the intercalated Ag-I has a $\beta$-AgI-like local structure with distorted tetrahedral symmetry, suggesting a mobile environment for the intercalated $Ag^+$ ion. In fact, from ac impedance analyses, we have found that the Ag-I intercalates possess a fast ionic conductivity ($\sigma_i=10^{-1.4}\sim 10^{-2.6}\Omega^{-1}\textrm{cm}^{-1}\;at\;270^{\circ}C$ with an uniform activation energy ($\DeltaE_a=0.22\pm 0.02$ eV). More interesting finding is that these intercalates exhibit high electronic conducting as well as ionic ones ($t_i$=0.02~0.60) due to their interstratified structure consisting of superionic conducting and superconducting layers. In this respect, these new intercalates are expected to be useful as an electrode material in various electrochemical devices.

The Solvent Extraction of Silver Ion by Novel Sulfur-Containing Podans (황을 포함하는 새로운 포단드에 의한 은 이온의 용매추출)

  • The podands I-VII, acyclic polyethers, expected high extractability for $Ag^+$ against $Pb^{2+}$ were designed and synthesized with high yields. Using podands I-VII as extractants, the %extraction(%Ex) of $Ag^+$ and $Pb^{2+}$ as picrates were determined in water/chloroform systems. The stability constants(log K) for the complexation of $Ag^+$ with podands I-VII were also determined by potentiometry. %Ex($Ag^+$) were proportional to the numbers of substituted sulfur donor atoms. Podand VI(log K : 7.65) having 3 substituted sulfur and podand VII(log K : 9.15) having 4 substituted sulfur, however, exhibited almost 100% of extractability, respectively. In %Ex($Ag^+/Pb^{2+}$, oxygen-sulfur mixed donor podands(IV-VII) showed the higher values. Otherwise, the values of log K and %Ex($Ag^+$) largely depended on the variation of donor-site of sulfur. From the results of NMR experiments, it seems that it is due to the ${\pi}-{\pi}$ stacking interaction between the aromatic end-groups.

Synthesis and Crystal Structure of Cyclodimetric Ag(I) Complex with 2,3-Bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine (고리 이합체 2,3-비스(2-피리딜)피라진(트라이플루오르아세테이토)은(I) 착물의 합성 및 결정 구조)

  • The slow of 2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)pyarzine(bpp) with Ag(CF₃CO₂) produces crystalline product suitable for X-ray crystallography. Crystallographic characterization of the crystal (C/sub 32/H/sub 20/-F/sub 6/N/sub 8/O₄Ag₂: triclinic P1, a=8.518(5)Å, b=9.546(2)Å, c=10.632(1)Å, α=81.11(1)°, β=87.61(3)°, γ=75.66(3)°, V=827.5(5)ų, Z=1, R=0.0431) has provided that the complex is a cyclic dimer [Ag(bpp)(CF₃CO₂)]₂. Each bpp ligand connects two tetrahedral silver(I) ions in a tridentate mode (Ag-N, 2.26()-2.43(2)Å), and the trifluoroacetato anion is bonded to each silver(I) atom in a monodentate fashion (Ag-O, 2.38(1); 2.39(2) Å). The skeletal cyclic dimer is stable up to 212℃, and drastically decomposes around this temperature.

Determination of Ag(Ⅰ) Ion at a Modified Carbon Paste Electrode Containing N,N'-Diphenyl Oxamide

  • New approach for the determination of Ag(I) ion was performed by using a carbon paste electrode (CPE) containing N,N'-Diphenyl oxamide (DPO) with anodic stripping voltammetry. The CMEs have been prepared by making carbon paste mixtures containing an appropriate amount of DPO salt coated onto graphite particles to analyze trace metal ions via complexation followed by stripping voltammetry. Various experimental parameters affecting the response, such as pH, deposition time, temperature, and electrode composition, were carefully optimized. Using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry, the logarithmic linear response range for the Ag(I) ion was 1.0 × $10^{-7}$ - 5.0 × $10^{-9}$ M at the deposition time of 10 min, with the detection limit was 7.0 × $10^{-10}$ M. The detection limit adopted from anodic stripping differential pulse voltammetry was 7.0 × $10^{-10}$ M for silver and the relative standard deviation was ± 3.2% at a 5.0 × $10^{-8}$ M of Ag(I) ion (n = 7). The proposed electrode shows a very good selectivity for Ag(I) in a standard solution containing several metals at optimized conditions.

  • Let R be a commutative ring with unity. The extension of annihilating-ideal graph of R, $^{\bar{\mathbb{AG}}}$(R), is the graph whose vertices are nonzero annihilating ideals of R and two distinct vertices I and J are adjacent if and only if there exist n, m ∈ ℕ such that InJm = (0) with In, Jm ≠ (0). First, we differentiate when 𝔸𝔾(R) and $^{\bar{\mathbb{AG}}}$(R) coincide. Then, we have characterized the diameter and the girth of $^{\bar{\mathbb{AG}}}$(R) when R is a finite direct products of rings. Moreover, we show that $^{\bar{\mathbb{AG}}}$(R) contains a cycle, if $^{\bar{\mathbb{AG}}}$(R) ≠ 𝔸𝔾(R).

A study on the safe operation condition for Bi-2223/Ag tapes with applied alternating currents (교류용 Bi-2223/Ag 선재의 안정 통전 조건에 관한 연구)

  • Bi-2223/Ag tapes need to be safe, even it is under the over-critical current state for the protection of a superconducting power machine. However, it is not easy to identify the condition for the safe operation because of their broad S/N transition region. In this paper, for the study of the operation condition of Bi-2223/ Ag tapes, we investigated the V-I curves and the temperature variation of Bi-2223/ Ag tapes experimentally, applying alternating over-currents, and analyzed the relationship between resistance and temperature increase. For the experiments, a Bi-2223/Ag tape of 57 A $I_c$ was prepared, and the over-critical current characteristics under adiabatic state from $LN_2$ was measured. From the experiments, we confirmed that the Joule heating predicted by V-I curve corresponded with the increase of the measured temperature exactly. Using the results, a safe operation condition of Bi-2223 tape was discussed.

Single crystal growth and structure analysis of superionic conductor ${\beta}-Ag_3SI$ (초이온도전체 ${\beta}-Ag_3SI$의 단결정 육성과 결정구조 해석)

  • Single crystals of the superionic conductor ${\beta}-Ag_3SI$ were prepared by thermal treatmentr from the reactant mixture of AgI and $Ag_2S$. The growing single crystals were made to spherical shape of $200{mu}m$ in diameter. The detailed structures analyses revealed that $Ag^+$ in ${\beta}-Ag_3SI$ distribute on 12h site of 4-coordination inpreference to 3c site of 6-coordination. The effective one-particle potential (o.p.p.). of $Ag^+$ along [110] direction was evaluated from the probability density function(p.d.f.) Activation energy calculated from the o.p.p. curve has been found to be 0.012 eV for the diffusion of $Ag^+$ on (001) plane in the ${\beta}-Ag_3SI$ structure.
