  • $AgGaSe_2$ single crystal thin films grown by using hot wall epitaxy (HWE) system. The single crystal thin films were investigated by photoluminescence and double crystal X-ray diffraction(DCXD) measurement. From the photoluminescence measurement of $AgGaSe_2$ single crystal thin film, we observed free excition ($E_x$) observable only in high quality crystal and neutral bound exciton ($D^{\circ}$,X) having very strong peak intensity. And, the full width at hall maximum and binding energy of neutral donor bound excition were 8 meV and 14.1 meV, respectively. By Haynes rule, an activation energy of impurity was 141 meV.

  • The stochiometric $AgGaSe_2$ polycrystalline mixture of evaporating materials for the $AgGaSe_2$ single crystal thin film was prepared from horizontal furnance. To obtain the single crystal thin films, $AgGaSe_2$ mixed crystal and semi-insulating GaAs(100) wafer were used as source material and substrate for the Hot Wall Epitaxy (HWE) system, respectively. The source and substrate temperature were fixed at $630^{\circ}C$ and $420^{\circ}C$, respectively. The thickness of grown single crystal thin films is $2.1{\mu}m$. The single crystal thin films were investigated by photoluminescence and double crystal X-ray diffraction(DCXD) measurement. From the photoluminescence measurement of $AgGaSe_2$ single crystal thin film, we observed free excition ($E_x$) observable only in high quality crystal and neutral bound excition ($D^{\circ}$,X) having very strong peak intensity. And, the full width at half maximum and binding energy of neutral donor bound excition were 8 meV and 14.1 meV, respectively. By Haynes rule, an activation energy of impurity was 141 meV.

  • The electrical conductivity of solid electrolyte $RbAg_4I_5$ single crystal was studied at various temperatures. The four-probe method was used in measuring the conductance with an ac signal imposed on the specimen. The ionic conductivity was $0.284 ohm^{-1} cm^{-1}\;at\;25^{\circ}C$, and the activation energy for $Ag^+$ ion migration was calulated to be 1.70 kcal/mole. These values agree well with those reported for polycrystalline samples. Reactions at $Ag/RbAg_4I_5$ interface were studied by cyclic voltammetry with a silver reference electrode. It was found that silver ion is reversibly reduced at silver surfaces below zero volt, and iodide was oxidized above +0.67 volt. The anodic current arising from the oxidation of the electrode was small in magnitude initially over a wide range of potential, but, after silver was cathodically deposited on the electrode, reversing the potential sweep to the anodic direction resulted in a sharp peak of anodic current.

  • $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were synthesized by a sol-gel process using titanium tetra isopropoxide as a precursor at room temperature. Ag-doped $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were prepared by photoreduction of $AgNO_3$ on $TiO_2$ under UV light irradiation and calcinated at $400^{\circ}C$. Ag-doped $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were characterized for their structural and morphological properties by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The photocatalytic properties of the $TiO_2$ and Ag-doped $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were evaluated according to the degree of photocatalytic degradation of gaseous benzene under UV and visible light irradiation. To estimate the rate of photolysis under UV (${\lambda}=365nm$) and visible (${\lambda}{\geq}410nm$) light, the residual concentration of benzene was monitored by gas chromatography (GC). Both undoped/doped nanoparticles showed about 80 % of photolysis of benzene under UV light. However, under visible light irradiation Ag-doped $TiO_2$ nanoparticles exhibited a photocatalytic reaction toward the photodegradation of benzene more efficient than that of bare $TiO_2$. The enhanced photocatalytic reaction of Ag-doped $TiO_2$ nanoparticles is attributed to the decrease in the activation energy and to the existence of Ag in the $TiO_2$ host lattice, which increases the absorption capacity in the visible region by acting as an electron trapper and promotes charge separation of the photoinduced electrons ($e^-$) and holes ($h^+$). The use of Ag-doped $TiO_2$ nanoparticles preserved the option of an environmentally benign photocatalytic reaction using visible light; These particles can be applicable to environmental cleaning applications.

  • Sodium hydroxide solutions are often employed as sterilization agents in the pharmaceutical industry. Here, the chloride content is considered as a critical impurity. In this study, an electrochemical method was developed to remove chloride ions (Cl-) through the oxidative deposition of AgCl on a Ag anode. The Cl- content in the commercially available 50% w/w NaOH solution employed was approximately 100 mg Cl-/kg NaOH. As the OH- content is approximately 18,000 times higher than the Cl- content, the formation of AgCl may be expected to be thermodynamically less favorable than the formation of Ag2O. However, activation energies for AgCl and Ag2O formation have been reported to be approximately 3.8 and 31.2 kJ/mol, respectively, and indicate that AgCl formation is favored. AgCl can be selectively produced by controlling the anode potential. Here, the Cl- concentration was reduced to less than 50 mg Cl-/kg NaOH when an anode potential of 0.18 or 0.19 V vs. Hg/HgO (reference electrode) was applied for one hour at 50℃. XRD analysis and visual monitoring of the Ag anode confirmed the oxidative deposition of AgCl on the anode surface as well as the electrochemical desalination of the concentrated NaOH solution.

  • In order to leach Au and Ag from gold-silver bearing sulfide concentrate, the sulfide concentrate was ground in a ball mill for a dry pre-treatment and a wet pre-treatment process. Mineralogical studies and thiourea leaching experiments were carried out with the pre-treated sulfide concentrate. The results of the pre-treatment with the concentrate samples showed the mean particle size and iso-electrical potential was smaller in the dry pre-treatment sample than in the concentrate sample, and the contents was lower in the wet pre-treatment sample than in the dry pre-treatment sample. In XRD analysis, amorphous properties were only shown in the wet pretreatment sample. The results of the concentrate sample leaching experiments showed that the best Au, Ag leaching parameters were when the addition of thiourea was at a 1.0 g concentration, ferric sulfate was 1.0 M, sulfuric acid was 2.0 M and the leaching temperature was at $60^{\circ}C$. The Au, Ag leaching rate was always much greater and faster with the wet pre-treatment samples than with the dry pre-treatment samples. Accordingly, it is expected that more Au, Ag can be leached in an eco-friendly methodology using wet pre-treatment. The pre-treatment could be improved with an optimized grinding additive reagent and through researching grinding time in future non-cyanide processes.

  • Kudoa septempunctata is a myxozoan parasite that causes food poisoning in individuals consuming olive flounder. The present study aimed to investigate the currently insufficiently elucidated early molecular mechanisms of inflammatory responses in the intestine owing to parasite ingestion. After Kudoa spores were isolated from olive flounder, HT29 cells were exposed to spores identified to be alive using SYTO-9 and propidium iodide staining or to antigens of Kudoa spores (KsAg). IL-1β, IL-8, TNF-α and NFKB1 expression and NF-κB activation were assessed using real-time PCR, cytokine array and western blotting. The immunofluorescence of FITC-conjugated lectins, results of ligand binding assays using Mincle-Fc and IgG-Fc, CLEC4E expressions in response to KsAg stimulation, and Mincle-dependent NF-κB activation were assessed to clarify the early immune-triggering mechanism. Inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, GM-CSF and TNF-α), chemokines (IL-8, CCL2, CCL5 and CXCL1) and NF-κB activation (pNF-κB/NF-κB) in HT29 cells increased following stimulation by KsAg. The immunofluorescence results of spores and lectins (concanavalin A and wheat germ agglutinin) suggested the importance of Mincle in molecular recognition between Kudoa spores and intestinal cells. Practically, data for Mincle-Fc and KsAg binding affinity, CLEC4E mRNA expression, Mincle immunofluorescence staining and hMincle-dependent NF-κB activation demonstrated the involvement of Mincle in the early immune-triggering mechanism. The present study newly elucidated that the molecular recognition and immune-triggering mechanism of K. septempunctata are associated with Mincle on human intestinal epithelial cells.

  • The objective of this study was to examine the optimal concentration and the exposure time of ethanol, Ca-ionophore, and strontium to achieve massive recipient oocytes in porcine. The cleavage (51.4% vs. $21.3{\sim}44.3%$) and embryo development rates (45% vs. $13.3{\sim}29.9%$) were significantly higher (p.0.05) in oocytes treated with 10% ethanol for 10 min than other treatments. The oocytes treated with 25mM Ca-ionophore for a minimum of 2min and 20mM strontium for a minimum of 6h showed significantly higher cleavage and embryo development rates than those of other treatments (P<0.05). Cleavage rate with duplicated ethanol treatment was significantly lower than those with ethanol alone (P<0.05). The cleavage rate and embryo development rates were significantly lower in duplicated strontium treatment than those in both alone and combination (P<0.05). But the cleavage and embryo development rates in treatment with Ca-ionophore were significantly higher in combined treatment (Ca-ionophore and cycloheximide) than those in single or duplicated treatment (P<0.05). These results might induce establishment of the optimal concentration and the exposure time on activation media to build up activation condition of porcine oocytes.

  • Silver coated copper composite powders were prepared by electroless plating method by controlling the activation and deposition process variables such as feeding rate of silver ions solution, concentration of reductant and molar ratio of activation solution $(NH_4OH/(NH_4)_2SO_4)$ at room temperature. The characteristics of the product were verified by using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic absorption (A.A.). It is noted that completely cleansing the copper oxide layers and protecting the copper particles surface from hydrolysis were important to obtain high quality Ag-Cu composite powders. The optimum conditions of Ag-Cu composite powder synthesis were $NH_4OH/(NH_4)_2SO_4$ molar ratio 4, concentration of reductant 15g/l and feeding rate of silver ions solution 2 ml/min.

  • Osteoclasts are multinucleated cells with the unique ability to resorb bone. Elevated activity of these cells under pathologic conditions leads to the progression of bone erosion that occurs in osteoporosis, periodontal disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. Thus, the regulation of osteoclast apoptosis is important for bone homeostasis. In this study, we examined the effects of the Janus tyrosine kinase 2 specific inhibitor AG490 on osteoclast apoptosis. We found that AG490 greatly inhibited osteoclast apoptosis. AG490 stimulated the phosphorylation of Akt and ERK. Adenovirus-mediated expression of dominant negative (DN)-Akt and DN-Ras in osteoclasts inhibited the survival of osteoclasts despite the presence of AG490. Cytochrome c release during osteoclast apoptosis was inhibited by AG490 treatment, but this effect was inhibited in the presence of LY294002 or U0126. AG490 suppressed the pro-apoptotic proteins Bad and Bim, which was inhibited in osteoclasts infected with DN-Akt and DN-Ras adenovirus. In addition, constitutively active MEK and myristoylated-Akt adenovirus suppressed the cleavage of pro-caspase-9 and -3 and inhibited osteoclast apoptosis induced by etoposide. Taken together, our results suggest that AG490 inhibited cytochrome c release into the cytosol at least partly by inhibiting the pro-apoptotic proteins Bad and Bim, which in turn suppressed caspase-9 and -3 activation, thereby inhibiting osteoclast apoptosis.
