Liquid filtration by membrane filters is essential for the preparation of ultrapure water in semiconductor manufacturing processes. The separation of submicrometer particles suspended in ultrapure water with a laminated fibrous membrane filter was studied numerically and experimentally in the present work. We found that an electrical double layer around a single fiber expanded to a large extent at a low ion concentration, as in ultrapure water, and deformed toward the upstream of the fiber with increasing filtration velocity. Since an increase in the electrical double-layer thickness leads to a decrease in the electrical potential gradient, particles with the same polarity as the fiber approach the fiber more easily and are captured at a high filtration velocity. Experimental results also confirmed that the collection efficiency of polystyrene latex(PSL) particles through a PTFE filter became higher as the filtration velocity increased.
For a reasonable analysis of grade efficiency of cyclone separator, in-line measurements of particle size and particle concentration are needed. The purpose of this study is to define the correlation of measurement data and to measure grade efficiency and pressure drop. The authors adapted that the grade efficiency could be calculated directly from the counted particle numbers. The problem of collection efficiency calculation was different from counting rate of aerosol counters under the same conditions. It is important factor to use the rate of the particle counters to obtain reliable results. Therefore, the authors should use and calculate compensation factor considering sensitivity of aerosol counters, gas velocity and concentration affect higher 30% than originally measured grade efficiency. As the pressure drop and grade efficiency increase, as flow rate increase and then also pressure drop and grade efficiency increase.
Atmospheric nano-particles along the altitude is one of the main factors causing severe weather phenomena. It is a challenge to find the precise particle size distribution. One useful instrument includes a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS). This measures the size distribution of submicron aerosols. The SMPS consists of a condensation particle counter (CPC), differential mobility analyzer (DMA), high voltage power supplier (HVPS), and neutralizer. Due to the many components, it is difficult to install a commercial SMPS into a tethered balloon package system (Eun, 2011). In this study, we customized a SMPS for the tethered balloon package system called Hy-SMPS. It is portable, compact in structure, and evaluated by TSI SMPS using mono and poly-dispersed particles.

Two butanol-based Condensation Particle Counters (CPC 3022, CPC 3025), three water-based CPCs (CPC3781, CPC3785${\times}$2), a Gardner Counter, a Fast Mobility Particle Sizer (FMPS), and an Aerosol Electrometer (AE) were deployed to measure the number concentrations from atomized aerosol under six different conditions. Comparisons of particle number concentrations measured by the CPCs, FMPS, and AE were conducted to evaluate the performance of the each CPCs using laboratory generated artificial particles such as NaCl, succinic acid ($C_4H_6O_4$), and particles generated by propane torch & heat gun in the chamber. Good correlation between the CPC3025 and FMPS was observed for the total particle number concentrations in the size range 15 nm to 90 nm. In addition, this paper suggests that photometric mode in water-based CPC3785 could not be used as quantitative of number concentrations for CPC3785.

IIn this study, we have developed drying systems for reducing the error by humidity on measuring particulate matter (PM) in the ambient air with optical particle measuring instruments. Two types of drying systems were designed: drying systems using heating and dilution methods. In addition, 3 types of drying systems using a heating method were designed: Type A (1 hole), B (3 holes) and C (7 holes). After making them, the laboratory and field tests were carried out to evaluate the developed drying systems. As a result, it was shown that the PM concentrations obtained by PM monitoring devices with drying systems agree well with that of the reference devices. Therefore, it could be concluded that the drying systems can be applied to PM monitoring devices for real-time monitoring of the ambient aerosols.
In our previous study, a wire-plate type electrostatic precipitator (ESP) was developed to collect bioaerosols of 100 nm size. In the study, various flow rates (40 ~ 100 L/min) and applied voltages (3 ~ 10 kV) were tested for experiment. In this study, numerical analysis was performed for the ESP of the previous study with the same flow rates and applied voltages, but with varying the size of bioaerosols to 0.04 ~ 2.5 ㎛. Overall, the numerical analysis results well predicted the experimental data. Bioaerosols of 0.1 ~ 0.5 ㎛ showed the minimum collection efficiency for all conditions because of low charge number. The effect of the ionic wind generated by the corona discharge was calculated. However, the ionic wind did not affect much the collection efficiency. The aerosol collection in the ESP of this study was due to the electrostatic force generated by particle charge in the electric field. This numerical study on the ESP can be used for the design and optimization of higher flow rate (> 100 L/min) ESP.

This thesis investigates the jetting characteristics of an aerosol jet printing (AJP) process as a function of design and operating conditions. The governing equations of the AJP system are derived for experimentation and analysis. To understand the characteristics of the AJP system, it analyzes the jetting characteristics as a function of the flow rate of the carrier gas and the sheath gas, and the variation of the linewidth with the nozzle exit size based on particle tracking. The thesis focuses on computational fluid dynamics (CFD), which is a computer simulation. The particle tracking results obtained by CFD were analyzed using MATLAB. CFD analytical models can be analyzed in environments with different conditions and consider more specific situations than mathematical computational models. The validity of the CFD analysis is shown by comparing the experimental results with the CFD analysis.

Photoelectric charging is a very efficient way of charging small particles. This method can be applied to combustion measurement, electrostatic precipitator, metal separation and control of micro-contamination. To understand the photoelectric charging mechanism, particle charging of silver by exposure to ultraviolet is investigated in this study. Average charges and charge distributions are measured at various conditions, using two differential mobility analyzers, a condensation nucleus counter, and an aerosol electrometer. The silver particles are generated in a spark discharge aerosol generator. After that process, the generated particles are charged in the photoelectric charger using low-pressure mercury lamp that emits ultraviolet having wavelength 253.7 nm. The results show that ultra-fine particles are highly charged by the photoelectric charging. The average charges linearly increase with increasing particle size and the charge distribution change with particle size. These results are discussed by comparison with previous experiments and proposed equations. It is assumed that the coefficient of electron emission probability is affected by initial charge. The results also show that the charge distribution of a particle is dependent on initial charge. Single changed particle, uncharged particle and neutralized particle are compared. The differences of charge distribution in each case increase with increasing particle size.
Cobalt-iron oxides have emerged as alternative electrode materials for supercapacitors because they have advantages of low cost, natural abundance, and environmental friendliness. Graphene loaded with cobalt ferrite ($CoFe_2O_4$) nanoparticles can exhibit enhanced specific capacitance. In this study, we present three-dimensional (3D) crumpled graphene (CGR) decorated with $CoFe_2O_4$ nanoparticles. The $CoFe_2O_4$-graphene composites were synthesized from a colloidal mixture of GO, iron (III) chloride hexahydrate ($FeCl_3{\cdot}6H_2O$) and cobalt chloride hexahydrate ($CoCl_2{\cdot}6H_2O$) respectively, via one step aerosol spray pyrolysis. Size of $CoFe_2O_4$ nanoparticles was ranged from 5 nm to 10 nm when loaded onto 500 nm CGR. The electrochemical performance of the $CoFe_2O_4$-graphene composites was examined. The $CoFe_2O_4$-graphene composite electrode showed the specific capacitance of $253F\;g^{-1}$.
