Satellite imagery may contain large regions covered with atmospheric aerosol. A high-resolution satellite imagery affected by non-homogenous aerosol cover should be processed for land cover study and perform the radiometric calibration that will allow its future application for Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT) data. In this study, aerosol signal was separated from high resolution satellite data based on the reflectance separation method. Since aerosol removal has a good sensitivity over bright surface such as man-made targets, aerosol optical thickness (AOT) retrieval algorithm could be used. AOT retrieval using Look-up table (LUT) approach for utilizing the transformed image to radiometrically compensate visible band imagery is processed and tested in the correction of satellite scenery. Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), EO-1/HYPERION data have been used for aerosol correction and AOT retrieval with different spatial resolution. Results show that an application of the aerosol detection for HYPERION data yields successive aerosol separation from imagery and AOT maps are consistent with MODIS AOT map.

We retrieved the aerosol optical thickness $\tau$$_{a}$ over land from Landsat-7/ETM+ image data using the correlation between the visible reflectance and middle IR reflectance. This band correlation method for aerosol retrieval was originally proposed fur MODIS data analysis by Kaufman et al.(1977). The results of retrieved aerosol optical thickness $\tau$$_{a}$ from Landsat-7/ETM+ data were compared with the simultaneous sky observation data at our study site. We found a good agreement between the retrieved and observed values. We presented the distribution maps of the aerosol optical thickness over land, retrieved from Landsat-7/ETM+ image data. Then, the surface reflectance map was also presented. The aerosol optical thickness over sea was retrieved assuming no reflected contribution from sea in the near IR band. In addition, we discussed some limitations when we apply the band correlation method.

This thesis describes the use of measured aerosol size distributions and size-resolved hygroscopic growth to examine the physical and chemical properties of several particle classes. The primary objective of this work was to investigate the optical and cloud forming properties of a range of ambient aerosol types measured in a number of different locations. The tool used for most of these analyses is a differential mobility analyzer / tandem differential mobility analyzer (DMA / TDMA) system developed in our research group. To collect the data described in two of the chapters of this thesis, an aircraft-based version of the DMA / TDMA was deployed to Japan and California. The data described in two other chapters were conveniently collected during a period when the aerosol of interest came to us. The unique aspect of this analysis is the use of these data to isolate the size distributions of distinct aerosol types in order to quantify their optical and cloud forming properties. I used collected data during the Asian Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE-Asia) to examine the composition and homogeneity of a complex aerosol generated in the deserts and urban regions of China and other Asian countries. An aircraft-based tandem differential mobility analyzer was used for the first time during this campaign to examine the size-resolved hygroscopic properties of particles having diameters between 40 and 586 nm. Asian Dust Above Monterey (ADAM-2003) study was designed both to evaluate the degree to which models can predict the long-range transport of Asian dust, and to examine the physical and optical properties of that aged dust upon reaching the California coast. Aerosol size distributions and hygroscopic growth are measured in College Station, TX to investigate the cloud nucleating and optical properties of a biomass burning aerosol generated from fires on the Yucatan Peninsula. Measured aerosol size distributions and size-resolved hygroscopicity and volatility were used to infer critical supersaturation distributions of the distinct particle types that were observed during this period. The predicted CCN concentrations were used in a cloud model to determine the impact of the different aerosol types on the expected cloud droplet concentration. RH-dependent aerosol extinction coefficients are calculated at a wavelength of 550 nm.

Aerosol direct radiative forcing (ADRF) retrieval method was developed by combining data from passive and active satellite sensors. Aerosol optical thickness (AOT) retrieved form the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) as a passive visible sensor and aerosol vertical profile from to the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) as an active laser sensor were investigated an application possibility. Especially, space-born Light Detection and Ranging (Lidar) observation provides a specific knowledge of the optical properties of atmospheric aerosols with spatial, temporal, vertical, and spectral resolutions. On the basis of extensive radiative transfer modeling, it is demonstrated that the use of the aerosol vertical profiles is sensitive to the estimation of ADRF. Throughout the investigation of relationship between aerosol height and ADRF, mean change rates of ADRF per increasing of 1 km aerosol height are smaller at surface than top-of-atmosphere (TOA). As a case study, satellite data for the Asian dust day of March 31, 2007 were used to estimate ADRF. Resulting ADRF values were compared with those retrieved independently from MODIS only data. The absolute difference values are 1.27% at surface level and 4.73% at top of atmosphere (TOA).
This study proposes a single-channel satellite remote sensing algorithm for retrieving aerosol optical thickness over global ocean using FY-1C/1D data. An efficient lookup table (LUT)method is adopted in this algorithm to generate apparent reflectance in channel 1 and channel 2 of FY-1C/1D over ocean. The algorithm scale the apparent reflectance in cloud-free conditions to aerosol optical thickness using a state-of-art radiative transfer model 6S with input of the relative spectral response of channel 1 and 2 of FY-1C/1D. Monthly mean composite maps of the aerosol optical thickness have been obtained from FY-1C/1D global area coverage data between 2001 and 2003. Aerosol optical thickness maps can show the major aerosol source which are located off the west coast of northern and southern Africa, Arabian Sea and India Ocean. These result is very similar to other satellite sensors such as AVHRR and MODIS in the location area of heavy aerosol optical thickness over global ocean. The algorithm have been used to FY-1D operational performance and it is the first operational aerosol remote sensing product in China.

Due to high spatio-temporal variability of amount and optical/microphysical properties of atmospheric aerosols, satellite-based observations have been demanded for spatiotemporal monitoring the major aerosols. Observations of the heavy aerosol episodes and determination on the dominant aerosol types from a geostationary satellite can provide a chance to prepare in advance for harmful aerosol episodes as it can repeatedly monitor the temporal evolution. A new geostationary observation sensor, namely the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI), onboard the Himawari-8 platform, has been observing high spatial and temporal images at sixteen wavelengths from 2016. Using observed spectral visible reflectance and infrared brightness temperature (BT), the algorithm to find major aerosol type such as volcanic ash (VA), desert dust (DD), polluted aerosol (PA), and clean aerosol (CA), was developed. RGB color composite image shows dusty, hazy, and cloudy area then it can be applied for comparing aerosol detection product (ADP). The CALIPSO level 2 vertical feature mask (VFM) data and MODIS level 2 aerosol product are used to be compared with the Himawari-8/AHI ADP. The VFM products can deliver nearly coincident dataset, but not many match-ups can be returned due to presence of clouds and very narrow swath. From the case study, the percent correct (PC) values acquired from this comparisons are 0.76 for DD, 0.99 for PA, 0.87 for CA, respectively. The MODIS L2 Aerosol products can deliver nearly coincident dataset with many collocated locations over ocean and land. Increased accuracy values were acquired in Asian region as POD=0.96 over land and 0.69 over ocean, which were comparable to full disc region as POD=0.93 over land and 0.48 over ocean. The Himawari-8/AHI ADP algorithm is going to be improved continuously as well as the validation efforts will be processed by comparing the larger number of collocation data with another satellite or ground based observation data.

Effects of sea-salts on the properties of aerosol collected in a coastal region were studied by applying a gas-particle equilibrium model SCAPE to the measurement data from Korea Cheju Island in summer 1994. It was found that the observed higher ammonium concentrations in fine particles (PM2.5) than in TSP were caused by forced evaporation of ammonium in coarse fraction of aerosol by sea-salts and the degree of evaporation was quantified through an application of SCAPE. By subtracting the sea-salt fraction from the measured concentra-tions the changes of aerosol property were also studied. The concentrations of nitrate at both TSP and PM2.5 decreased when alkaline sea-salt fraction was removed from the measured data. Estimates of aerosol acidity increased for most samples with sea salt loadings, However in some cases with high mass fractions of sea-salt components the aerosol acidity of PM2.5 decreased slightly. This is though to be related with the formation of solid salt with the removal of sea-salts.

The characteristics of one year observation aerosol data in Seoul, 200 I was studied using an OPC (Optical Particle Counter). The size resolved aerosol number concentrations of 0.3 ∼ 25 11m were measured. The results were compared with PM$_{10}$ mass concentration data under various meteorological conditions including dust and precipitation events. For fine particles whose diameter is less than 2.23 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, the number concentration increases in the early morning which is considered due to transportation. while the coarse mode particles increase during daytime. This increase can be explained as local sources and human activities near sampling site. Hourly averaged data show that there exists diurnal variation. Generally, PM$_{10}$ data showed a similar tendency with OPC data. The size resolved OPC data showed that the particles of 0.5 ∼ 3.67 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ are positively correlated with PM$_{10}$ data. The accumulated volume fraction of size resolved aerosol concentration in 0.5 ∼ 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ showed that 0.5 ∼ 2.23 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ particles occupied 59.2% of total aerosol volume of 0.5 ∼ 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$./TEX>.

This study has developed a technique to divide the aerosol optical depth of the entire aerosol (${\tau}_{total}$) into the dust optical depth (${\tau}_D$) and the pollution particle optical depth (${\tau}_P$) using the AERONET sun/sky radiometer data provided in Version 3. This method was applied to the analysis of AERONET data observed from 2006 to 2016 in Beijing, China, Seoul and Gosan, Korea and Osaka, Japan and the aerosol optical depth trends of different types of atmospheric aerosols in Northeast Asia were analyzed. The annual variation of ${\tau}_{total}$ showed a tendency to decrease except for Seoul where observation data were limited. However, ${\tau}_D$ tended to decrease when ${\tau}_{total}$ were separated as ${\tau}_D$ and ${\tau}_P$, but ${\tau}_P$ tended to increase except for Osaka. This is because the concentration of airborne aerosols, represented by Asian dust in Northeast Asia, is decreased in both mass concentration and optical concentration. However, even though the mass concentration of pollution particles generated by human activity tends to decrease, Which means that the optical concentration represented as aerosol optical depth is increasing in Northeast Asia.
