  • The river management in Korea had been focused on line based 2D spatial data for the developing river management application system. In this study, the polygon based 3D spatial data such as aerial photos and satellite images were selected and used through comparing their resolution levels for the river environment management. In addition, 1m detailed DEM (Digital Elevation Model) was constructed to implement the real topography information around river so that the damage area scale could be extracted for flood disaster. Also, the social environment thematic maps such as a cadastral map or land cover map could be used to verify the real damage area scale by overlay analysis on aerial photos or satellite images. The construction of these spatial data makes possible to present the real surface information and extract quantitative analysis to support the scientific decision making for establishing the river management policy. For the further study, the lidar surveying data will be considered as the very useful data by offering the real height information of riverbed as the depth of river so that flood simulation can give more reality.

  • Realistic 3D building construction in urban area has become an important issue because of increasing demand of 3D geo-spatial information in many application. Contrary to the conventional 3D building model construction approach using aerial images and high-resolution satellite imagery, it has been researched widely in building reconstruction using high-accuracy aerial LIDAR data in the latest. This paper presents a method for 3D building construction through building outlines extraction by LoG operator's Zero-crossing and line generation and refinement by Douglas-Peucker algorithm.

  • Video from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is influenced by natural environments due to the light-weight UAV, specifically by winds. Thus UAV's shaking movements make the video shaking. Objective of this paper is making a stabilized video by removing shakiness of video acquired by UAV. Stabilizer estimates camera's motion from calculation of optical flow between two successive frames. Estimated camera's movements have intended movements as well as unintended movements of shaking. Unintended movements are eliminated by smoothing process. Experimental results showed that our proposed method performs almost as good as the other off-line based stabilizer. However estimation of camera's movements, i.e., calculation of optical flow, becomes a bottleneck to the real-time stabilization. To solve this problem, we make parallel stabilizer making average 30 frames per second of stabilized video. Our proposed method can be used for the video acquired by UAV and also for the shaking video from non-professional users. The proposed method can also be used in any other fields which require object tracking, or accurate image analysis/representation.

  • Spatial information is geometrical information combined with the properties of an object. In city areas where unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) usage demand is high, it is necessary to determine the appropriate driving altitude considering the height of buildings for safe driving. In this study, we propose a data-provision method that generates the driving altitude of UAVs with a pseudo-3D building model. The pseudo-3D building model is developed using high-precision spatial information provided by the National Geographic Information Institute. The proposed method generates the driving altitude of the UAV in terms of tile information, including the UAV's starting and arrival points and a straight line between the two points, and provides the data to users. To evaluate the efficacy of the proposed method, UAV driving altitude information was generated using data of 763 551 pseudo-3D buildings in Seoul. Subsequently, the generated driving altitude data of the UAV was verified in AirSim. In addition, the execution time of the proposed method and the calculated driving altitude were analyzed.

  • The high-altitude and mobility characteristics of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have made them a key element of new radio systems, particularly because they can exceed the limits of terrestrial networks. However, at high altitudes, UAVs can be significantly affected by intercell interference at a high line-of-sight probability. To mitigate this drawback, we propose an algorithm that selects the optimal beam to reduce interference and maximize transmission efficiency. The proposed algorithm comprises two steps: constructing a user-location-based fingerprint database according to the user types presented herein and cooperative beam selection. Simulations were conducted using cellular cooperative downlink systems for analyzing the performance of the proposed method, and the signal-to-interference-plus-noise cumulative distribution function and spectral efficiency cumulative distribution function were used as performance analysis indicators. Simulation results showed that the proposed algorithm could reduce the effect of interference and increase the performance of the desired signal. Moreover, the algorithm could efficiently reduce overheads and system cost by reducing the amount of resources required for information exchange.

  • Lately, digital restitution was became common using digital aerial photos. Therefore, we can obtain three-dimensional data. As a plotting-maker is checked by naked eye, plotting original data is very useful for making reliable three-dimensional data including contour and elevation point layers. In this study, we want to make precise and accurate digital elevation model using plotting original data. Contour and elevation point layers was extracted in digital map and break line was extracted in plotting original data. And then, compared both of results. For comparison, we selected slight slope and complex topography area like a residence area, mountain and agricultural land. We extracted break line deleting layer until obtaining ideal digital elevation model. As the results, We could extract contour, elevation points, eight road and two boundary layers using break lines. And We could obtain precise elevation model. Editing break lines, the distortion of digital elevation model could be minimized in the complex and sharp slope area.

  • Many building detection methods mainly rely on line segments extracted from aerial or satellite imagery. Building detection methods based on line segments, however, are difficult to succeed in high resolution satellite imagery such as IKONOS imagery, for most buildings in IKONOS imagery have small size of roofs with low contrast between roof and background. In this paper, we propose an efficient method to extract line segments and group them at the same time. First, edge preserving filtering is applied to the imagery to remove the noise. Second, we segment the imagery by watershed method, which collects the pixels with similar intensities to obtain homogeneous region. The boundaries of homogeneous region are not completely coincident with roof boundaries due to low contrast in the vicinity of the roof boundaries. Finally, to resolve this problem, we set up snake model with segmented region boundaries as initial snake's positions. We used a greedy algorithm to fit a snake to roof boundary. Experimental results show our method can obtain more .correct roof boundary with small size and low contrast from IKONOS imagery. • This study presents an automatic matching method for generating a dense, accurate, and discontinuity-preserved digital surface model (DSM) using multiple images acquired by an aerial digital frame camera. The proposed method consists of two main procedures: area-based multi-image matching (AMIM) and stereo-pair epipolar line matching (SELM). AMIM evaluates the sum of the normalized cross correlation of corresponding image points from multiple images to determine the optimal height of an object point. A novel method is introduced for determining the search height range and incremental height, which are necessary for the vertical line locus used in the AMIM. This procedure also includes the means to select the best reference and target images for each strip so that multi-image matching can resolve the common problem over occlusion areas. The SELM extracts densely positioned distinct points along epipolar lines from the multiple images and generates a discontinuity-preserved DSM using geometric and radiometric constraints. The matched points derived by the AMIM are used as anchor points between overlapped images to find conjugate distinct points using epipolar geometry. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated for several different test areas, including urban areas.

  • This paper introduces an automated method for building height recovery through the integration of high-resolution satellite images and digital vector maps. A cross-correlation matching method along the vertical line locus on the Ikonos images was deployed to recover building heights. The rational function models composed of rational polynomial coefficients were utilized to create a stereopair of the epipolar resampled Ikonos images. Building footprints from the digital maps were used for locating the vertical guideline along the building edges. The digital terrain model (DTM) was generated from the contour layer in the digital maps. The terrain height derived from the DTM at each foot of the buildings was used as the starting location for image matching. At a preset incremental value of height along the vertical guidelines derived from vertical line loci, an evaluation process that is based on the cross-correlation matching of the images was carried out to test if the top of the building has reached where maximum correlation occurs. The accuracy of the reconstructed buildings was evaluated by the comparison with manually digitized 3D building data derived from aerial photographs.
