  • The present study investigated the effect of the combined carbonation and steam curing on the physicochemical properties and CO2 uptake of the Portland cement concrete. Four different curing regimes were adopted during the initial 10 h of curing to evaluate the potential of carbonation curing as an alternative to conventional steam curing in the precast concrete industry from environmental and practical viewpoints. Four combinations of carbonation and steam curing conditions were applied as curing regimes to the samples at an early age. The test results indicated that the samples treated with the combined carbonation and steam curing exhibited higher early strength development compared to the other samples, signifying that carbonation curing can reduce the production time of precast concrete. Furthermore, the CO2 uptake capacity of the samples was calculated and found to be as high as 18% with respect to the mass of the paste samples. Hence, the simultaneous utilization of steam and CO2 for the fabrication of precast concrete members has the potential to make precast concrete greener and more cost-effective.

  • Social participation of the elderly and people with disabilities continuously becomes more active due to improvement of social systems and technological development. Various assistive systems, such as intelligence robots and intelligence home systems, have been developed to support the social participation, and obviously contributed to independent lives of the elderly and people with disabilities. These systems, however, usually require expensive special hardware. To relieve a financial burden software-oriented approaches, which utilizes existing hardware such as laptops, can be an alternative. The software should be developed considering users with physical limitation and without much knowledge of computers. This paper suggests software-oriented approaches to solve these problems and describes an actual development procedure of the software with related theories. We also introduce an unified user interface for a special work chair as a real application.

  • Poly-Si is an essential material for floating gate in NAND Flash memory. To fabricate this material within region of floating gate, chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) is commonly used process for manufacturing NAND flash memory. We use colloidal silica abrasive with alkaline agent, polymeric additive and organic surfactant to obtain high Poly-Si to SiO2 film selectivity and reduce surface defect in Poly-Si CMP. We already studied about the effects of alkaline agent and polymeric additive. But the effect of organic surfactant in Poly-Si CMP is not clearly defined. So we will examine the function of organic surfactant in Poly-Si CMP with concentration separation test. We expect that surface roughness will be improved with the addition of organic surfactant as the case of wafering CMP. Poly-Si wafer are deposited by low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) and oxide film are prepared by the method of plasma-enhanced tetra ethyl ortho silicate (PETEOS). The polishing test will be performed by a Strasbaugh 6EC polisher with an IC1000/Suba IV stacked pad and the pad will be conditioned by ex situ diamond disk. And the thickness difference of wafer between before and after polishing test will be measured by Ellipsometer and Nanospec. The roughness of Poly-Si film will be analyzed by atomic force microscope.

  • Raman spectroscopy is an equipment that is widely used for classifying chemicals in chemical defense operations. However, the classification performance of Raman spectrum may deteriorate due to dark current noise, background noise, spectral shift by vibration of equipment, spectral shift by pressure change, etc. In this paper, we compare the classification accuracy of various machine learning algorithms including k-nearest neighbor, decision tree, linear discriminant analysis, linear support vector machine, nonlinear support vector machine, and convolutional neural network under noisy and spectral shifted conditions. Experimental results show that convolutional neural network maintains a high classification accuracy of over 95 % despite noise and spectral shift. This implies that convolutional neural network can be an ideal classification algorithm in a real combat situation where there is a lot of noise and spectral shift.

  • The development of a binder system with a lower carbon footprint as an alternative to Portland cement has been intensely researched. In the present study, alkali-activated fly ash exposed to carbon dioxide at an early age was characterized in compressive strength tests and by MIP, XRD and FT-IR analyses. The compressive strength of carbonated specimens experienced a dramatic increase in comparison to uncarbonated specimens. The microstructural densification of the carbonated specimens was evidenced by MIP. The XRD pattern showed peaks assigned to nahcolite, indicating that the pH was lower in the carbonated specimens. Under the carbon dioxide-rich environment, the aluminosilicate gel reached a more Si-rich state, which improved the mechanical properties of the alkali-activated fly ash.

  • Conventional bridge inspection involves the physical positioning of an inspector by the hydraulic telescoping boom of a "snooper truck" thereby providing visual access to bridge components. The process is time consuming, hazardous, and may be affected by lighting conditions, Therefore, it is of great interest that an automated and/or teleoperated inspection robot be developed to replace the manual inspection procedure. This paper describes the advanced bridge inspection robot system under development and other related activities currently undergoing at the Bridge Inspection Robot Development Interface (BIRDI). BIRDI is a research consortium with its home in the Department of Civil and Environmental System Engineering at Hanyang University at Ansan. Its primary goal is to develop advanced robot systems for bridge inspection and monitoring for immediate field application and commercialization. The research program includes research areas such as advanced inspection robot and motion control system, sensing technologies for monitoring and assessment, and integrated system for bridge maintenance. The center embraces 12 institutions, which consist of 7 universities, 2 research institutes, and 3 private enterprises. Research projects are cross-disciplinary and include experts from structural engineering, mechanical engineering, electronic and control engineering. This research project will contribute to advancement of infrastructure maintenance technology, enhancement of construction industry competitiveness, and promotion of national capacity for technology innovation.

  • The Advanced Power Reactor Plus(APR+), which is a GEN III+ reactor based on the APR1400, is being developed in Korea. In order to enhance the safety of the APR+, a passive auxiliary feedwater system(PAFS) has been adopted in the APR+. The PAFS replaces the conventional active auxiliary feedwater system(AFWS) by introducing a natural driving force mechanism while maintaining the system function of cooling the primary side and removing the decay heat. As the PAFS completely replaces the conventional AFWS, it is required to verify the cooling capacity of PAFS for the core damage frequency(CDF) evaluation. For this reason, this paper discusses the cooling performance of the PAFS during transient accidents. The test case and scenarios were picked from the result of the sensitivity analysis in APR+ Probabilistic Safety Assessment(PSA). The analysis was performed by the best estimate thermal-hydraulic code, RELAP5/.MOD3.3. This study shows that the plant maintains the stable state without the core damages under the given test scenarios. The results of PSA considering this analysis' results shows that the CDF values are decreased. The analysis results can be used for more realistic and accurate performance of a PSA.
