  • Three species of tapeworms infect humans in their adult stage (Taenia solium, Taenia saginata and Taenia asiatica). The 3 are flat, opaque white or yellowish, and exceptional long segmented parasites, measuring 1 to 12 m in their adult stage. In this review, the development of the knowledge regarding the first species, mainly focused on understanding how the larval stage or cysticercus is transmitted to humans, is described. The second species is a cosmopolitan parasite that only causes taeniosis and not cysticercosis; therefore, it will not be included. Information on the third species, which is presently being produced, since this species was recognized as such only at the end of the 20th century, will be discussed at the end of this review.

  • The present study compared the developmental potential, telomerase activity and transcript levels of X-linked genes (ANT3, HPRT, MeCP2, RPS4X, XIAP, XIST and ZFX) in the bovine somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) embryos derived from different age and cell cycle of female donor nucleus. In experiment 1, the fusion rate, cleavage rate to 2-cell stage, developmental rate to blastocyst stage, and the mean number of total and ICM cells was slightly increased in embryos cloned with fetal fibroblasts compared to those with adult fibroblasts, but there was no significantly (p<0.05) differences. Telomerase activity was also similar in blastocysts cloned with fetal and adult fibroblasts. Up-regulated RPS4X and down-regulated MeCP2, XIAP, and XIST transcript level were observed in blastocysts cloned with adult fibroblasts, compared to those with fetal fibroblasts. In experiment 2, the fusion rate, cleavage rate to 2-cell stage, developmental rate to blastocyst stage, and the mean number of total and ICM cells was significantly (p<0.05) increased in embryos cloned with fetal fibroblasts at early G1 phase of the cell cycle, compared to those of fetal fibroblasts at late G1 phase. DNMT1 transcript was observed to significantly (p<0.05) increased in the fetal fibroblasts at 3 hrs after trypsin treatment of confluent culture. Further, level of telomerase activity and transcribed X-linked genes was also significantly (p<0.05) higher in the early G1 SCNT blastocysts than those of late G1. The results imply that fetal fibroblasts at early G1 phase induces the enhanced developmental potential and up-regulated telomerase activity and X-linked gene, but aberrant transcript pattern of X-linked genes may be displayed in the SCNT embryos.

  • Development process of benthic community on experimental substrata attached on a newly installed artificial reef complex in Jeju Island was observed for 27 months from 1992 to 1994. Among 34 species of algae and 64 species of zoobenthos obtained from the study, Ecklonia cava dominated with a maximum biomass of about $10kg/m^2$. It was able to smother the other animals, however it provided a new substrate for the new settlers. Opportunistic bryzoans such as Likenopora radiata and Dexiospira spirillum occurred during the early stage were substituted by poriferans, banacles and other bryzoans. Young barnacles were smothered by bryozoans, on the contrary, bryozoans were bulldozed by adult barnacles. No apparent differences have been observed between vertically and horizontally installed substrates in terms of species composition and biomass during the early stage of succession. Thereafter owing to the rapid growth of E. cava, the horizontal substrata carried on a higher biomass while the vertical showed a higher coverage. The benthic process on the experimental substrata can be classified into three stages: initial stage, build up stage and regulatory stage. Important mechanisms involved were canopying of E. cava, suffocation by bryozoans and poriferans, and bulldozing of adult barnacles.

  • Purpose: Many studies have shown that regular exercise produces positive effects on health. The purpose of this study was to examine the differences of health-related quality of life by stage of exercise and the interaction effect of age, sex and stage of exercise. Method: A total of 1266 participants were interviewed with structured questionnaire. Stage of exercise was assessed with a single item and respondents were classified with respect to exercise intention and behavior. Health-related quality of life was measured with SF-36 Health Survey Questionnaire. Result: Health-related QOL were found to be different by stage of exercise. The subjects who were reached maintenance stage showed significantly higher scores on physical functioning, bodily pain, general health perception, mental health, role limitation due to emotional problems, social functioning, and vitality than those in preparation, contemplation, and precontemplation stage. In addition a significant interaction effect between stage of exercise and age was found on physical functioning, bodily pain, general health perception, mental health, and vitality. Conclusion: Perceived health-related QOL varies with stage of exercise. This finding suggests that health is related to both intention and behavior of exercise. Therefore it is important to consider cognitive-motivational and behavioral stage of change for developing exercise programs.

  • As a means for year-round rearing of bumblebee, CO$_{2}$ -narcosis time favorable for colony development was identified in Bombus terrestris. CO$_{2}$ -narcosis time divided into five classes: 11 days of adult emergence (A-11), the day of adult emergence (A-0), late pupal stage (LP), middle pupal sta ge (MP), and early pupal stage (EP). In egg-laying characteristics, the oviposition rate of LP, A-11 and A-0 was over 76.0$\%$, but that of MP and EP was less than 61.1 $\%$. At the same time, the days needed to first oviposition shortened to 9.8 10.5 days in A-11, A-O and LP, comparing to 13.7 -16.1 days in MP and EP. The rate of colony foundation, progeny-queen produced and period of colony foundation of A-11 were the best results in among those at different CO$_{2}$-treatment time. The number of worker produced was 109.2 -110.5 in A-H, LP and A-H, comparing to 82.0 - 86.8 in MP and EP. Also, the number of progeny-queen produced of A-H, A-O and LP was 36.1, 41.0 and 71.3, respectively, which corresponded to 1.5 - 3.1 fold higher than MP and EP. Taken these together, CO$_{2}$-narcosis time favorable for colony development was determined to be 11 days of adult emergence. Also, the day of adult emergence and late pupal stage showed a positive effect on the oviposition and colony development in CO$_{2}$-narcosis time.

  • The in vitro screening tests against the in vitro cultivated $L_3$ of Ascaris suum (in vitro $L_3$), which were cultivated from the embryonated egg to third-stage larva on 7 days in culture(DIC) and the in vivo rat's lung-derived $L_3$ of Ascaris suum (in vivo $L_3$), which were recovered from the lungs of rat on 7 days after infection, carried out in order to compare the anthelmintic efficacy of in vitro $L_3$ and that of in vivo $L_3$ in RPMI medium 1640 with 5% bovine calf serum. And also a screening test of efficacy against adult worms of Trichuris suis performed. The efficacies of screening tests were as follows : 1. The screening efficacies of abamectin and ivermectin against the in vitro $L_3$ were all 100% at the 10ppm concentration in RPMI medium 1640 on 5 DIC. 2. The screening efficacies of abamectin and ivermectin against the in vivo $L_3$ were all 100% at the 20ppm on 5 DIC or at 40ppm on 3 DIC. 3. The screening efficacies of abamectin and ivermectin against the adult worms of Trichuris suis were all 100% at 20ppm on 4 DIC. And therefore, the in vitro cultivated $L_3$ of Ascaris suum were used in the screening test as well as the in vivo rat's lung-derived $L_3$ of Ascaris suum. And also the adult worms such as Trichuris suis and filaroids which is small size and difficult to cultivate to vitro, were used in the screening test in vitro.

  • The present study compared the structure of mixilliped of Fenneropenaeus chinensis between the larval and adult stage and investigated the effect of the structural difference on the immunity of F. chinensis. A fourteen day and a one-month long culture trial were conducted each with postlarvae and adults of F. chinensis in the biofloc, mixed water (50% biofloc:50% clear seawater) and seawater control. Immune-related genes mRNA expressions of postlarvae was analysed by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). And the analysis of adult stage immunity was carried out using phenoloxidase (PO) enzyme activation in haemocyte. In the postlarvae, the final body weights were 51.43 and 58.47 mg for the biofloc water and the control seawater, respectively. On the other hand, the final body weights of the adults were significantly different between biofloc water and seawater. The survival rate showed the opposite trend to the growth rate. Immune related genes mRNA expression levels in the postlarvae in the biofloc water were significantly lower than those in the seawater. While, the adult stage showed significantly higher PO enzyme activations in the biofloc water than in the seawater with the PO enzyme activation increasing proportionally to the biofloc concentration. This result is considerably explained by the observations of setal morphological structures of the third maxilliped: postlarvae have short serrulated setae that compose the small 'net' structure while adults had long and dense plumose setae. It is understood that the morphological difference of the maxilliped structure resulted in the different feeding abilities in the postlarvae and the adult F. chinensis to use bioflocs as food source.

  • Purpose: The study was performed to identify the process of change, decisional balance and self-efficacy corresponding to the stage of smoking cessation behavior based on Transtheoretical Model in industrial workers. Method: A convenience sample of 146 industrial workers except for the never smokers, were recruited at a H industry in Ulsan. Data were collected from February 1 to 28, 2002. The research instruments were Stages of Change of Smoking Cessation Measure(DiClemente et al, 1991), Process of change(Prochaska, 1988), Smoking Abstinence Self Efficacy (SASE: DiClemente et al, 1985) and Decisional balance(SDB; Kim, 1999). Result: The results of this study were as follows; 1. The subjects were distributed in each stage of smoking cessation change: There were 64 subjects (43.0%) in the precontemplation stage, 35 subjects(23.5%) in the contemplation stage, 28 subjects(18.8%) in the preparation stage, 14 subjects(10.1%) in the action stage and 7 subjects(4.7%) in the maintenance stage. 2. Analysis of variance showed that experiental process(F=2.808, p=.042), behavioral process (F=4.567, p=.004) self-efficacy(F=9.809, p=.000), pros(F=11.107, p=.000), cons(F=6.686, p=.000), pros- cons(F=3.446, p=.018) were significantly associated with the stages of smoking cessation change. 3. Through discriminant analysis, it was found that 'PROS' was the most influential variable in discriminating the four stages of change. Conclusion: This study can provide the basis of staged matching smoking cessation program using TTM for more effective and useful intervention.
