  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of hypertension is increasing, and noodles have a high sodium content, so noodle consumption might be associated with a higher prevalence of hypertension. This study aimed to analyze the association between total and types of noodle intake and the risk of hypertension among Korean adults. Subjects aged 40-69 years were selected for this study. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This study included 56,580 participants (18,246 men and 38,334 women) aged 40-69 years old from the Health Examinees study. Noodle and nutrient intakes were assessed using the food frequency questionnaire. Hypertension was diagnosed as systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 mmHg or antihypertensive medication use. Cox proportional hazard models were used to calculate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for hypertension. RESULTS: Higher noodle consumption was associated with increased hypertension among men (HR, 1.273; 95% CI, 1.166-1.390) and women (HR, 1.116; 95% CI, 1.038-1.199). CONCLUSION: We recommended reducing noodle intake and consuming vegetables and fruits to increase potassium intake, which can prevent vascular diseases.

  • Objectives: This study aims to identify dietary factors related to metabolic syndrome in middle aged Korean men who were participants in the Fourth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES IV) in 2007. Methods: The study targeted 361 of the 709 men aged between 40 and 64 years for a final analysis; the other 348 surveys had incomplete data which did not allow for the determination of metabolic syndrome. The definition of metabolic syndrome was based on the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III(NCEP ATP III). Results: There were significant differences in the metabolic syndrome of middle-aged men according to age, smoking pack-years, and number of resturant meals per week. Dietary factors such as vitamins, riboflavin, natrium, carbohydrate, protein and lipid intakes were not significant. Conclusions: It was verified that metabolic syndrome in middle-aged men is related to age, smoking pack-years and number of resturant meals per week. Dietary factors were not significantly related. However, further detailed studies in this area are needed.

  • This study was conducted in order to investigate body awareness and dietary life according to gender. Subjects of the study were 120 men and 127 women aged 20 to 30 years, who exercise regularly at a fitness center in Seoul. The subjects were asked to fill out a questionnaire on body awareness, reason for regular exercise, dietary behaviors, and nutrition knowledge. The percentage of overweight and obesity was 69.2% in men, and 25.2% in women. The percentage of subjects who considered themselves as overweight was 38.3% in men and 59.8% in women. Intake of protein in men was higher than the recommended nutrient intake (RNI). Intake of energy in women was lower than the estimated energy requirement (EER). Men who considered themselves as overweight showed lower energy intake than men who considered their body weight as under and normal, whereas no difference in energy intake was observed between women who considered themselves as overweight and women who considered their body weight as under and normal.

  • Objectives : We wanted to evaluate the relationship between obesity and left colonic adenomatous polyps in Korean adult men. Methods : This study was conducted among 575 adults men (aged between 40 and 69), who had colonoscopy done from January to December 2002 during a routine health examination at Health Promotion Center, Ulsan University Hospital. The patients' colons were examined up to splenic flexure by using fiberoptic colonoscopy. A questionnaire survey on behavioral factors and physical measurements were also done. The body mass index (BMI) and waist-hip ratio (WHR) were used as the indices of obesity. The BMI was categorized into three levels: normal ($BMI{\leq}22.9$), overweight ($23{\leq}BMI{\leq}24.9$), and obese ($BMI{\geq}25.0$). The WHR was categorized into four levels with cutoff points at the 30th, 60th, and 90th percentile of the control group. Age, education, smoking, alcohol use and exercise were controlled for by performing multiple logistic regression analysis. Results : There were 99 cases of colonic adenomatous polyps. Four hundred seventy six subjects with normal colonoscopy findings served as the control. The BMI and WHR were associated with the adenomatous polyps (odds ratio, 1.81 [95% CI=1.02-3.19] for a $BMI{\geq}25.0$ as compared with a $BMI{\leq}22.9$, odds ratio, 3.94 [95% CI=1.77-8.77] for a $WHR{\geq}0.95$ as compared with a $WHR{\leq}0.86$). The BMI was not associated with the risk of adenomatous polyps after additional adjustment was made for the WHR, but the association between the WHR and adenomatous polyps was still positive and independent of the BMI (odds ratio, 4.15 [95% CI=1.63-10.59]). Conclusions : The results support that obesity, and particularly abdominal obesity, can be associated with an increased risk of incurring colonic adenomatous polyps.

  • To determine the relationship between hypertension and nutrient intake cross-sectional study were performed in a rural area. Adult resident over 30-year-old age were measured blood pressure and body mass index(BMI), and interviewed about food in-take for the previous 24 hours. 250 men and 297 women participated the survey. Significant correlation was showen in men between mean systolic blood pressure and protein density. Significant correlation with mean diastolic blood pressure was showen on protein density, protein energy(%), calcium density and energy-adjusted protein in men. We analysed risk factor for hypertension adjust the effect of age, BMI, sex and family history by multiple logistic regression. Protein density(odds ratio=3.18), fat density(odds ratio=1.94) and energy-adjusted protein(odds ratio=1.01) intake were positively associated with hypertension but sodium density(odds ratio=0.73) was showen to have inverse relationship.

  • Shaving for adult men is one of the essential requirements for life. For physiological reasons, most adult men have beards, and if men trim their beards and take good care of them, their appearance becomes cleaner. If a dull blade is used for a wet razor, or if an appropriate massage is not used, skin irritation may occur, resulting in shaving wounds. Therefore, the convenience and comfort of the razor are required as much as the skin becomes smooth after shaving. In this paper, a pre-shaving method of sound massage was proposed to reduce the irritation of wet shaving on the skin and increase the convenience of shaving. It softens the skin or secretes oil through non-face-to-face low-frequency speakers to increase skin gloss, making shaving smooth and safe. We recorded the sound of the wet shave state to determine the skin condition before and after the wet shave, and objectively compared and analyzed the effect with this sound spectrum. In other words, it can be seen from the experimental results that the sound massage before shaving reduces the friction between the razor and the skin and the skin and beard by -7.0 dB, improving the skin wound of the wet shave and achieving a refreshing shave.

  • This study aimed to identify and assess the influence of risk factors on the frequency of thyroid nodules diagnosed through ultrasonography among adults visiting for health screenings. The study analyzed 210 adult men and women who underwent thyroid ultrasound at J Hospital in Busan. The differences in variables were analyzed using Chi-square and independent t-tests, and risk ratios were calculated using binary logistic regression. The results showed significant differences in gender, age, T3, Free T4, Uric acid, T-chol, HDL-C and LDL-C. The risk ratios for risk factors indicated that women had a 2.42 times higher risk compared to men, and the age groups 41-50 and over 61 had risks 2.32 and 2.22 times higher, respectively compared to those under 40. Conversely, and increase in T3 and Free T4 levels was associated with a decreased risk of 0.12 and 0.86 times, respectively, while lipid levels had negligible influence. Based on these findings, it is concluded that regular ultrasonography monitoring, rather than solely relying on biochemical markers, is crucial for the early detection and management of thyroid nodules.

  • Increased waist circumference has shown to be more strongly associated with cardiovascular disease risk factors. The purpose of this study is to investigate the association between exercise capacity and cardiovascular risk factors among obese types in adult men. The subjects of this study were a total fifty-four obese persons and obesity criteria is body mass index $(BMI){\geq}25kg/m^2$. Diagnostic criteria for obesity was defined as a waist circumference of ${\geq}90cm$. The BMI in the obese subjects, as judged by the presence or absence of abdominal obesity, were classified into two groups (non-AO: without abdominal obesity group, AO: with abdominal obesity group). AO presented lower total exercise time, metabolic equivalents (METs) than Non-AO. AO showed slow HRR (heart rate recovery) response. HRR was negative correlated with BMI, body fat mass, waist circumference. AO had a high heart rate and a low cardiac output in submaximal exercise stage 1~2. In conclusion, AO's (with abdominal obesity groups) total exercise time, METs and HRR are lower than Non-AO. HRR is related with BMI, body fat mass and waist circumference.
