  • This study investigated the thermal degradation and fading behavior of PTT dyed with vat dye and its dyeing ability. The PTT sample was dyed with vat dye using an acid treatment and pad-steam method to improve the dyeing performance. This method made dye particle nanosize and allowed it to penetrate the polymer material easily. The sample dyed using the pad-steam method showed level dyeing and enhanced dyeing affinity, compared to the batch-dyeing method. The degradation behavior of PTT dyed with vat dye after each heat and UV treatment was examined with the change in tensile strength or K/S value on the sample. The tensile strength and K/S values of the sample dyed with vat dye after the heat and UV treatment decreased with increasing temperature and exposure time. Although they showed high degradation under severe conditions, its rate constant was improved compared to the samples dyed with disperse dye. Consequently, acid treatment and the pad-steam method resulted in the introduction of vat dye on PTT. In addition, the PTT dyed with vat dye showed enhanced thermal and UV resistance because of their high molecular weight and chemical structure for stable adsorption behavior.

  • In this study, the contamination of gold(Au) wire according to the types of rinse applied for surface treatment in the wire bonding process is investigated and confirmed. For the surface treatment, rinses containing silicon(Si) or those based on organic materials are mainly employed. To identify their effects, surface treatment is conducted on Au wire using two types of rinse at a 1.0 wt% concentration, referred to as Si-including and Oil-based rinse-coated Au wire. Subsequently, a simulation experiment is performed to verify the reactivity of dust containing Si components that could occur in the semiconductor process. Through optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) analysis, it is observed that a larger amount of dust is adsorbed on the surface of Si-including rinse-coated Au wire compared with the Oil-based rinse-coated Au wire. This is attributed that the rinse containing Si components is relatively polar, causing polar interactions with dust, which also has polarity. Therefore, it is expected that using a rinse without Si components can reduce contamination caused by dust, thereby decreasing the defect rate in the practical wire bonding process.

  • In this study, 165 wastewater discharge facilities in 10 business types were investigated with regard to 24 specific hazardous substances that included heavy metals, VOCs, CN, and phenol in the Gwangju city. Cu in the range from from 0.008 to 35.420 mg/L was detected in all business types and the detection rate was 46.8 %. Other heavy metals, such as Cd, As, Hg, Pb, and Cr+6 were detected as well. However, their detection rates ranged between 0.6 and 1.8 %. CN and phenol were detected in one and five facilities, respectively. 12 species of VOCs were detected: chloroform 80.6 % (0.42 to 81.60 μg/L), benzene 16.4 % (1.49 to 3.31 μg/L), trichloroethylene 11.5 % (1.78 to 6.02 μg/L), 1,1-dichloroethylene 10.3 % (1.23 to 5.89 μg/L), and dichloromethane 8.5 % (0.28 to 968.86 μg/L) in the detection rate order. The concentration of VOCs was detected in trace amounts, except for dichloromethane that exceeded the effluent quality standard in three business types, namely, metal manufacturing, food industry, and car washing facility. Chloroform was detected in all business types, where 24.88 μg/L were detected in the laundry business and 53.41 μg/L in the water supply business; the mean concentration of chloroform in these two business types was higher than elsewhere. Therefore, for the disposal of non-degradable specific hazardous substances in industrial wastewater, it is necessary to introduce physical and chemical processes, such as activated carbon adsorption, fenton oxidation, ozone treatment, as well as photocatalyst and the UV radiation.

  • Evaluation of the removal efficiencies of Fe(II) by reactive sand media coated with manganese (MCS), iron (ICS) and both of iron and manganese (IMCS) was investigated as functions of solution pH ranging from 2 to 9, reaction time and concentration of Fe(II) in a batch reactor using each reactive medium and additional oxidants such as $KMnO_4$ and NaOCl. When only Fe(II) was present in solution without any reactive medium, removal of Fe(II) was quite low below pH 5 due to a slow oxidation of Fe(II) and/or negligible precipitation but greatly increased above pH 5 due to a rapid oxidation of Fe(II) and subsequent precipitation of oxidized Fe species. ICS showed negligible efficiency on the removal of Fe(II) through adsorption. However, an efficient removal of Fe(II) was observed at low solution pH in the presence of IMCS or MCS through rapid oxidation and subsequent precipitation. Removal efficiency of Fe(II) by IMCS in the presence or absence of NaOCl was quite similar. Removal rate of Fe(II) by IMCS and additional oxidants gradually increased as the solution pH increased. From the kinetic experiments, removal pattern of Fe(II) was better described by pseudo-second-order equation than pseudo-first-order equation. A rapid removal of Fe(II) using IMCS in the presence of $KMnO_4$ was observed in the first 10 min. The initial removal rate of Fe(II) using $KMnO_4$ was 14,286 mg/kg hr. In case of using NaOCl, the removal of Fe(II) occurred rapidly in the first 6 hrs and then reached the near-equilibrium state. Removal of Fe(II) on IMCS was well expressed by Langmuir isotherm and the maximum removal capacity of Fe(II) was calculated as 1,088 mg/kg.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of various mix designs of concrete on the compressive strengths and corrosive rates when the concretes were immersed in sea water of the West Sea, as the part of study related to durated to durability of concrete by action of the sea water. Concrete mix designs used in this study were ordinary Concrete mix, Concrete mixes with different admixtures such as fly ash, pozzolith and vinsol resin, and pozzolan concrete mix. The concrete specimens were made and cured for 7 days and 28 days in the fresh water in accordance with the Korean Standard specification for concrete. Compressive strengths of the specimens were measured after immersing the specimens for one year in fresh water and sea water which were placed indoors. The sea water used in this test was taken from the Bay of Ahsan. Corrosive rate was also tested after immersing the specimens in the same sea water and placed indoors for one year. The results obtained from the tests are summarized as follows; 1. Compressive strength of an ordinary concrete was the lowest of the various mix desings of concrete immersed both in the fresh water and the sea water. Therefore, the uses of pozzolan cement, fly ash, pozoolith and vinsol resin in mix design of concrete had and effect on increasing compressive strength. 2. Pozzolan concrete was the most effective on compressive strength in the fresh water, but it had less effect than concrete with fly ash admixture immersed in the sea water. 3. The use of fly ash admixture in mix design of concrete showed higher strength as the immersing age is longer both in fresh water and sea water than the other concretes besides pozzolan concrete, but the concretewith fly ash admixture had lower strength than pozzolan concrete in the sea water. Therefore, concrete with fly ash admixture might be better than the pozzolan concrete as far as durability of concrete to sea water was concerned. 4. The use of pozzolith admixture in mix design of concrete had less compressive strength than the use of pozzolan cement for fly ash admixture both in fresh water and sea water. However, the concrete with pozzolith admixture was much stronger than one with vinsol resin admixture in fresh water, but somewhat stronger in the sea water. 5. Though the use of vinsol resin admixture was more effective than ordinary concrete on compressive strength both in fresh water and sea water, it was the least compressive strength among the other concretes. 6. Relation between compressive strengths and absorption rates of every kind of concrete besides concrete with fly ash admixture showed a linear regression line and the compressive strength is highee as the absorption rate is lower. Concrete with fly ash admixture had extremely high strength in comparison with corresponding adsorption rates of the other concretes. 7. Corrosive appearance on the surface of concretes was not occured significantly when exposed to the sea water for one year, However, the specimens of concretes besides ordinary concrete were a little heavier than those cured in fresh water for 28 days.

  • An IOM sampler equipped with glass fiber filter has been recently utilized instead of solid adsorbent, which was used to measure the inhalation exposure of agricultural operator to pesticides. The aim of this study is to validate the efficacy of an IOM sampler by measuring the trapping efficiency and breakthrough using kresoxim-methyl water-dispersible granule and fenthion emulsifiable concentrate. On LC-MS/ MS, minimum detection level was 12.5 pg and method limit of detection was 5.0 ng/mL. Good linearity ($R^2$ > 0.999) for matrix matched standards was obtained. Recoveries of pesticides from glass fiber filter were 102-109% (kresoxim-methyl) and 97-104% (fenthion) while those from XAD-2 resin were 94-98% (kresoxim methyl) and 93-100% (fenthion). Trapping efficiency test was performed with personal air pumps and IOM sampler (glass fiber filter) connected with solid adsorbent (XAD-2 resin) with two types of formulation (solid and liquid) which were diluted by standard rate and sprayed to IOM sampler. Those pesticides were trapped only in glass fiber filter without any breakthrough to solid adsorbent. After spiking of pesticides to glass fiber filter, breakthrough test was carried out with IOM sampler (glass fiber filter) which was connected with solid adsorbent. As a results, 87-101% of kresoxim-methyl and 96-105% of fenthion remained in spiked glass fiber filter, however, no pesticides were detected in second glass fiber filter and solid adsorbent. In conclusion, IOM sampler which equipped with glass fiber filter can be applied widely for pesticide inhalation exposure study since it has good trapping efficiency and adsorption capacity, regardless of the solid or liquid formulation.

  • The main objective of this study was to evaluate the removal properties of Cu from existing exfoliated vermiculite (EV) coated with a mixed solution of sulfuric acid and glycerol on the $580^{\circ}C$ in heating, which uses coated with glycerol of copper ions can be removed more effectively. Serial batch kinetic tests and batch sorption tests were conducted to determine the removal characteristics for Cu in aqueous solution. The result of batch kinetic test shows that removal rate, $K_{obs}$ (1/hr), of Cu are 0.579, 0.878, 3.459, and 6.578 for MEV weight 1 g (25 g/L), 2 g (50 g/L), 3 g (75 g/L), 4 g (100 g/L), respectively. In this case the initial pH of the solution was 3.26. The removal experiment according to the concentration, $K_{obs}$ (1/hr), of Cu are 1.96, 0.878, 1.25, and 1.04 for the initial concentration of 3 mg/L, 5 mg/L, 8 mg/L, 10 mg/L, and the initial pH of the solution are 3.46, 3.26, 3.10, 2.96, respectively. Influence of initial pHs on Cu removal were tested under 1g of MEV with 5 mg/L of Cu solution. $K_{obs}$ (1/hr) were increased from 0.263 (pH 3) to 0.525 (pH 5). It leads to the conclusion that the removal rates are inversely proportional to the initial Cu concentration and are increased proportional to the initial pHs. Sorption capacity of MEV was determined by batch sorption tests. The maximum sorption capacity ($Q_{max}$) obtained from Langmuir was 0.761 mg/g, Linear and Freundlich partition coefficients were 0.494 L/g and 0.729 L/g (1/n = 0.476). These results show that the MEV could be used as an excellent adsorbent for copper contained in various types of aqueous solutions.

  • This study was conducted to determine the influence of dithiopyr on growth of transplanted rice with different transplanting depths and the amount of $^{14}C$-dithiopyr adsorpted in the root and shoot of rice plants under paddy soil conditions. The growth rate of transplanted rice was lower in 0 and 0.25cm of transplanting depths with exposed basal stem than in 1 and 2cm of the depths in control plot. In the growth of transplanted rice treated with dithiopyr, plant hight and dry weight were significantly inhibited in 0 and 0.25cm depth plots but not affected.in 0.5, 1, 2 and 4cm depth plots, and roop length were influenced in 0, 0.25 and 4cm depth plots but not in 0.5, 1 and 2cm depth plots. The amount of ratioactivity in shoot and root of rice plants as affected by $^{14}C$-dithiopyr were the highest in 0 and 0.25cm depth plots and decreased in over 0.5cm depth plots. However the extent in amount of distributed radioactivity in the plants among the different transplanting depths was narrow gradually with the growth of plants. Therefore, injury of transplanted rice by dithiopyr is little in over 0.5cm transplanting depth with burried basal stem and the inhibition on rice plants with extreme shallow transplanting such as 0 and 0.25cm depths should be due to more adsorption of dithiopyr.

  • The Myoungbong mine located in Boseong-gun, Jellanamdo consists of Au-Ag bearing quartz veins which filled the fissures of Bulguksa granitic rocks of Cretaceous. The tailings obtained from the Myungbong mine were used to investigate the effects of various processes, such as oxidation of primary sulfides and formation(alteration) of secondary and/or tertiary minerals, on arsenic immobilization in tailings. This study was conducted via both mineralogical and chemical methods. Mineralogical methods used included gravity and magnetic separation, ultrasonic cleaning, and instrumental analyses(X-ray diffractometry, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and electron probe microanalyzer) and aqua regia extraction technique for soils was applied to determine the elemental concentrations in the tailings. Iron (oxy)hydroxides formed as a result of oxidation of tailings were identified as three specific forms. The first form filled in rims and fissures of primary pyrites. The second one precipitated and coated the surfaces of gangue minerals and the final form was altered into yukonites. Initially, large amounts of acid-generating minerals, such as pyrite and arsenopyrite, might make the rapid progress of oxidation reactions, and lots of secondary minerals including iron (oxy)hydroxides and scorodite were formed. The rate of pH decrease in tailings diminished, in addition, as the exposure time of tailings to oxidation environments was prolonged and the acid-generating minerals were depleted. Rather, it is speculated that the pH of tailings increased, as the contribution of pH neutralization reactions by calcite contained in surrounding parental rocks became larger. The stability of secondary minerals, such as scorodite, were deteriorated due to the increase in pH, and finally arsenic might be leached out. Subsequently, calcimn and arsenic ions dissociated from calcites and scorodites were locally concentrated, and yukonite could be grown tertiarily. It is confirmed that this tertiary yukonite which is one of arsenate minerals and contains arsenic in high level plays a crucial role in immobilizing arsenic in tailings. In addition to immobilization of arsenic in yukonites, the results indicate that a huge amount of iron (oxy)hydroxides formed by weathering of pyrite which is one of typical primary minerals in tailings can strongly control arsenic behavior as well. Consequently, this study elucidates that through a sequence of various processes, arsenic which was leached out as a result of weathering of primary minerals, such as arsenopyrite, and/or redissolved from secondary minerals, such as scorodite, might be immobilized by various sorption reactions including adsorption, coprecipiation, and absorption.

  • In this study, physico-chemical properties and environmental fate were investigated and ecotoxicity tests using fish, daphnia and algae were conducted for an initial ecological risk assessment of 1,2-Benzisothiazol-3-one. Due to low volatility of the test substance under environmental conditions, it is likely to distributed in soil and water environment. The compound has low adsorption in the soil, with low bioconcentration potential. Acute toxicity results showed that 96 h-$LC_{50}$ for Oryzias laties was 4.7 mg/L (measured) and 48h-$EC_{50}$ for Daphnia magna was 3.3 mg/L (measured). In a growth inhibition test with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, 72 h-$EC_{50}$ was 0.456 mg/L (growth rate, nominal) and 0.262 mg/L (yield, nominal). Using the acute toxicity value of algae, predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC) in the aquatic environment was determined to be 2.62 ${\mu}g/L$ using an factor of 100. According to globally harmonized system (GHS), the compound was categorized as aquatic acute 1 for algae, while it was categorized as aquatic acute 2 for fish and daphnia. This screening assessment suggests that the test substance may pose ecological risks in the aquatic environment.
