  • The ocean contains around eighty elements of the periodic table and uranium is also one among them, with a uniform concentration of 3.3 ppb and a relative abundance factor of 23. With a large coastline, India has a large stake in exploiting the 4 billion tonnes of uranium locked in seawater. The development of radiation grafting techniques, which are useful in incorporating the required functional groups, has led to more efficient adsorbent preparations in various geometrical configurations. Separation based on a polymeric adsorbent is becoming an increasingly popular technique for the extraction of trace heavy metals from seawater. Radiation grafting has provided definite advantages over chemical grafting. Studies related to thermally bonded non woven porous polypropylene fiber sheet substrate characterization and parameters to incorporate specific groups such as acrylonitrile (AN) into polymer back bones have been investigated. The grafted polyacrylonitrile chains were chemically modified to convert acrylonitrile group into an amidoxime group, a chelating group responsible for heavy metal uptake from seawater/brine. The present work has been undertaken to concentrate heavy metal ions from lean solutions from constant potential sources only. A scheme was designed and developed for investigation of the recovery of heavy metal ions such as uranium and vanadium from seawater.

  • This experiment was carried out with the purpose of testing cadmium adsorption abilities of multi wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT), activated carbon, and synthesized layered double hydroxide (LDH). In the acidic condition, only MWCNT was effective for removing cadmium ion in the aqueous phase while other adsorbents rarely removed it. The MWCNT and cadmium ion adsorption reactions followed pseudo-first order kinetic. When the initial pH value was neutral (pH = 7), cadmium ion was rapidly removed by MWCNT and activated carbon in 4 hr (100% and 99.2%, respectively). Increasing adsorbent dosages affects the pH evolution and cadmium ion removal (0 to 99%). Cytotoxicity test showed that both MWCNT and LDH has low cytotoxic effects on three kind of human cells (A549, HS-294t, and HT-29).

  • New equipment for quantitative and qualitative adsorption of volatile organic compound was set up, and using this equipment, adsorption behaviors of various carbob-based nanomaterials and $TiO_2$ thin films prepared by atomic layer deposition were compared. We could conclud that $TiO_2$ thin films can show higher adsorption capacity of toluene comparing to the carbon-based nanostructures due to higher affinity of the surface OH groups of $TiO_2$ towards toluene adsorption. We also demonstrate that our method allows to discriminate reversible and irreversible adsorptions at a given temperature.

  • A density functional theory (DFT) study of $CO_2$ adsorption on barium oxide (BaO) adsorbents is conducted to understand the chemical activity of the oxygen site on the BaO (100) surface. This study evaluated the adsorption energies and geometries of a single $CO_2$ molecule and a pair of $CO_2$ molecules on the BaO (100) surface. A quantum calculation was performed to obtain information on the molecular structures and molecular reaction mechanisms; the results of the calculation indicated that $CO_2$ was adsorbed on BaO to form a stable surface carbonate with strong chemisorption. To study the interactive $CO_2$ adsorption on the BaO (100) surface, a pair of $CO_2$ molecules was bound to neighboring and distant oxygen sites. The interactive $CO_2$ adsorption on the BaO surface was found to slightly weaken the adsorption energy, owing to the interaction between $CO_2$ molecules.

  • Several types of mesoporous silica-alumina adsorbents with varied $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratios were prepared by spray pyrolysis and were used for the purification of the anticancer agent paclitaxel. When $S_{0.5}A_{0.5}$ (Silica/Alumina molar ratio = 0.5/0.5) was used, the highest purity (~27%) and yield (~63%) of paclitaxel were obtained from adsorbent treatment and hexane precipitation. Removal of impurities was confirmed by TGA analysis of the organic substances that were adsorbed to the adsorbent.

  • Air pollution problems due to the emission of pollutants from the various industrial facilities become serious issues and lots of air pollution control processes have been developed. To remove the SO$_2$ and NOx emitted from the solid waste incinerator and coal fired power plants, we studied the Ca-based sorbent which was prepared by waste clam and limestone. The objectives of this study were to develop a clam-based sorbent for removal of SO$_2$ and NOx, and to investigate the physicochemical properties of the waste clam sorbent. In order to determine acid gas removal capacity of sorbent, the batch study on SO$_2$ and NOx removal was performed with the Ca-based sorbent in the fixed bed reactor. Results of the research revealed that clam-based sorbent can be used as the iron-manufacturing industry and chemical adsorbents for the removal of acid gases because the lime content of the waste calm was more than 53.92%. From physicochemical analysis and gas reaction experiments, it could be concluded that clam is good sorbent for the removal of SO$_2$ and NOx in waste incinerator and flue gas desulfurization processes.

  • This study was performed to investigate the possible uses of waste sludge for the removal of heavy metal ions. The adsorption experiments were conducted with wastes such as sewage treatment sludge, water treatment sludge and oyster shell to evaluate their sorption characteristics. Heavy metals selected were cadmium, copper and lead. in the sorption experiments on the sewage treatment sludge, water treatment sludge, oyster shell and soil, sorption occurred in the beginning and it reached equilibrium after 40 minutes on the oyster shell and 4 hour on the sewage treatment sludge and water treatment sludge. Results of Freundlich isotherms indicated that sewage treatment sludge could be properly used as an adsorbent for heavy metals and sorption strength of heavy metals was in the order of Pb > Cu > Cd. In the influence of pH on the adsorbents, sorption rate was more than 80% in pH 4 and most of heavy metals were adsorbed in pH 9. Adsorption rate of Cd decreased with decreasing pH and then adsorption rate of Cu was lower in soil.

  • Several adsorbents were tried to remove the selenium ions from industrial wastewater and the following ascending order of the adsorption performance for the selenium at pH 9 was observed: cation exchange resin < chelate resin < zeolite < brown marine algae < granular activated carbon < anion exchange resin. Initial concentration of selenium(146 mg/L) in industrial wastewater was reduced to 63 mg/L of selenium at pH 9 by neutralization process. The maximum uptake of Se calculated from the Langmuir isotherm with anion exchange resin was 0.091 mmol/g at pH 10 and that with granular activated carbon was 0.083 mmol/g at pH 6. The affinity coefficients of Se ion towards anion exchange resin and granular activated carbon were 3.263 L/mmol at pH 10 and 0.873 L/mmol at pH 6, respectively. The sorption performance of anion exchange resin at the low concentration of Se, namely, was much better than that of granular activated carbon. The Se ions from industrial wastewater throughout neutralization process and two steps of adsorption using anion exchange resin was removed to 97.7%.

  • The chemical effects resulting from the capture of the thermal neutrons by manganese in different crystalline permanganates, that is, potassium permanganate, sodium permanganate, silver permanganate, barium permanganate and ammonium permanganate, have been investigated. The distribution of radioactive manganese formed has been determined by using different absorbents and ion-exchangers, that is, manganese dioxide, alumina, Zeolite A-3, Kaolinite and Dowex-50. The distribution of radioactive manganese in various adsorbents and ion-exchangers has almost similar result for each permanganate. The affinity for radioactive manganous ion is greatest for Dewex-50. A significant increase of retention is shown through the thermal annealing and the retention depends on the first ionization potential of metal ion in permanganates.

  • Activated Carbon Fibers (ACFs) are widely used as adsorbents in technologies related to pollution abatement due to their highly porous structure and large adsorption capacity. The porous structure and surface area of ACFs depends strongly on both the activation processes arid the nature .of the precursors. The chemical activation with hydroxides has recently been, of great interest as it permits the preparation of activated carbon fibers with highly developed porosity. In this work, OXI-PAN fiber used as precursor for the preparation of activated carbon fibers by chemical activation with KOH and NaOH. The affects of several activation conditions on the surface properties, pore size distribution and adsorption capacity of Ag ion and Iodine ion on ACFs studied.
