Parents' marital conflicts are often linked to various emotional and behavioural difficulties of their children but rarely known about later adolescent and adult lives. This study was undertaken to examine if serious parental conflict such as divorce and/or separation in childhood was associated with emotional and social performance during later adolescent and adult lives. The research literature on divorce was briefly reviewed. The data was derived from the National Child Development Study (NCDSS 1974/age 16 - 1991/age 33) which followed the lives of 17,500 individuals born on March 3-9, 1958 in England, Scotland and Wales. Regression analyses indicate strong evidence that the experience of parental divorce or separation in childhood negatively affects the child's emotional and social performance in their subsequent life. The higher likelihood of having emotional problems, being less competent at their job, experiencing health/disability problems, being a lone-parent, unemployed, and homeless were strongly associated with parental divorce or separation experienced in childhood. Intervention is desirable to address the concerns influencing socio-psychological performance amongst children who have experienced parental divorce or separation.

Purpose: We investigated the impact of parent, teacher, and peer relationships on adolescent school life satisfaction and confirmed the mediating effects of delinquency experiences on this relationship in this study. The structural equation modeling technique was used to analyze survey data from 650 adolescents in the W area for this survey study. The following are the key findings: First, the more positive adolescents' relationships with their parents, teachers, and peers, the lower their delinquency and the greater their satisfaction with school life. The study also discovers that delinquency experiences have a mediating effect on the relationships between parents, teachers, and peers, as well as on adolescents' school life satisfaction. Based on these findings, we present convergent intervention and practice strategies for improving adolescent school life satisfaction.

Objectives: The current study investigated the personality characteristics of parents of children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), which is commonly used in clinical medicine. Methods: Participants were 117 parents of children with ADHD (96 boys and 21 girls) and 77 parents of comparison children (50 boys and 27 girls), who completed the Korean version of the MMPI. Results: The MMPI scores of the fathers of ADHD children were significantly higher on the Psychopathic Deviate (Pd), Masculinity-Femininity (Mf), Paranoia (Pa), and Psychasthenia (Pt) scales than the comparison group's were. In addition, the mothers of ADHD children had higher MMPI scores on the traits of Hypochondriasis (Hs), Psychopathic Deviate (Pd), and Schizophrenia (Sc) than the comparisong roup had, but were not significantly higher. Conclusion: The fathers of ADHD children might be antisocial, irresolute, passive, paranoid, and anxious. In addition, mothers of ADHD children might have hypochondriacal, antisocial, and/or psychological confusional traits, but these were not be significantly high. These results suggest that the psychopathology of parents of ADHD children might correlate with their children's ADHD.
This study examines the effects of consumer socialization on Korean adolescent impulsive buying behavior. The current study used the third and sixth waves from the Korean Education and Employment Panel (KEEP) survey that has been administered by the Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training since 2004. The subjects were high school juniors and university sophomores in 2006 and 2009, respectively. The final sample for panel regression analysis included 1,718 individuals. Two major agents of socialization (school and parents) were utilized in our model. Parent financial behavior (if the parents had savings) and the effectiveness/helpfulness of economics education in middle or high school were included in our estimation model. Two categories were included as individual factors: (1) psychological aspects and personal traits covering variables such as stress from self-image, academic stress, self-regulation, and a tendency of risky behavior and (2) financial behavior and attitudes, which include work experience, amount of money in hand, shopping habits, and if parental financial support is expected after high school graduation. The results from a random effects model revealed that the effects of consumer socialization through school was marginally significant, while through parents was not. Stress from self-image and the level of self-regulation were found to be significant. Neither risky behavior nor academic stress were a significant factor for impulsive buying behavior. The amount of money available in hand and shopping habits showed a significant influence. Implications for educators, parents and policy makers are identified.

Objectives: This study was conducted to compare the mothers' rearing attitude of ADHD children and that of children with depressive disorder. Methods: The participant consisted of 58 school-aged children diagnosed as ADHD, 14 children diagnosed as depressive disorder based on DSM-IV criteria. Normal control group consisted of 34 school-aged children who are free of any diagnosis of psychiatric disorders. Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire, Parenting Style Questionnaire, Children's Depression Inventory, Marital Satisfaction Scale, Beck's Depression Inventory were administered to all children and their mothers. Results: The parents of ADHD children showed more aggressive/hostile, neglecting/indifferent and less warm/affectionate parenting styles to their children than those of the depression and control groups. The depressive group perceived their parents as more rejecting than the control groups. Conclusion: The externalizing symptoms of ADHD might provoke parental distress and make it difficult for the parents to show positive rearing attitude toward their children. The depressive children might be more sensitive and perceptive to the negative sign of their parents' rearing attitude.
Objective: To review the literature on development in the peer relationships of the adolescents within the context of their parents' divorce. Method: The cognitive and sociocultural literature was searched to analyze the social interactions of the adolescents of divorced parents. Results: The evidence supports the variations in adolescents' peer relations based on their family structure. Comparisons with the adolescents of the nuclear families and the step-families suggest certain types of interactions the adolescents of divorced parents experience. Conclusions: Divorce of the parents is associated with the difficulties their children at adolescent experience, such as the higher level of social isolation among their peers or their incompetence in social skills. For there is not much known about the integration into the world of peers of the adolescents from the divorced families, while their general psychological and cognitive development after the separation is often studied, future study will need to focus on their peer interactions at their school environment and the social treatment for the possible hardships in their peer relations.

Objective: This study examined the facotrs influencing the relationship of adolescents with non-custodial parent. Specifically, this study focused on the comparative influence of the family function as a factor controlling other factors such as socio-demographic characteristics, beliefs about parental divorce, and social support. Methods: Data were collected from 322 adolescents from divorced families using a structured questionnaire. SPSS 22.0, descriptive statistical analysis, correlation analysis, and hierarchical multiple regression were performed to analyze the data. Results and Conclusion: The results revealed that beliefs about parental divorce, social support, and family function affected the relationship with non-custodial parent. After controlling the influence of other factors, family function was found to have a significant influence on the relationship with non-custodial parents. Based on the results, practical suggestions were provided to enhance the relationship between adolescents and non-custodial parents.
The purposes of this study are to measure the prevalence of parental violence toward adolescents and to explore the predictors based on a data gathered from a sample of adolescents. A total of 1,451 adolescents attending middle and high school in Seoul and rural area completed a structured questionnaire. The results show that about 32% of the respondents are physically assaulted by their father and/or mother for the past year. A logistic analysis shows that adolescents are more likely to experience parental violence when their parents have frequent marital conflicts and when parents use violence between themselves than the adolescent whose parents have no frequent spousal conflict and no domestic violence. The results also show that the age of adolescents and the changes in the level of academic achievement are significant predictors of adolescents'experience of parental violence. The probability of experiencing parental violence was lowered as age increased. When adolescent had a significant drop in school achievement, the probability of experiencing parental violence increased. Based on these findings, research and policy implications to reduce and prevent the family violence toward adolescents are discussed.

In South Korea, it has become popular for adolescent girls to wear makeup. From social perspectives on their makeup use, however, it remains controversial among parents, teachers, and even the girls. This study examined the status of adolescent girls' makeup usage, identified factors that influence their makeup use, and laid the groundwork for establishing a social consensus on makeup use among adolescent girls in South Korean society. Data from South Korean adolescent girls were collected and analyzed using MANOVA for repeated measures, confirmatory factor analysis, and structural equation modeling. Adolescent girls were found to wear less makeup at school than outside of school. Additionally, their makeup use was influenced by both positive (e.g., fashion leaders and social support from friends) and negative factors (e.g., low self-esteem). The findings of this study suggest that instead of strict bans against the use of makeup by girls, educational programs are needed to help adolescent girls grow up with healthy perspectives.
