Quantitative Assessment of Infrared Analysis of Concrete Admixtures

  • This study investigates quantitative methods for assessment of infrared analysis of concrete admixtures using correlation coefficients by performing IR scans following the ASTM C494/C494M-11 specifications. In order to achieve this goal, numerous IR scans were performed on specimens supplied by the manufacturer from different batches to ensure uniformity and equivalency. These scans were then analyzed to create correlation coefficients for each admixture. The correlation coefficients were used to quantitatively evaluate and interpret IR Scans of job samples. The study focused on 23 most commonly used concrete admixtures by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT). They include air-entrainers, accelerators, retarders, water reducers, and other combinations of these admixtures. Their correlation coefficients were established by analyzing a total of 12 scans of each admixture from three different batches supplied by the manufacturer at different time intervals. In order to validate the obtained correlation coefficients and establish a target correlation, job samples were tested and compared to the obtained correlations. The study also evaluated the effects of drying time and using different types of KBr on correlation coefficients.

  • When concrete structures are exposed under marine condition for a long time, the steel in concrete is corroded due to the ingression of chlorides in the sea water. Because the damages of corrosion resulting from the chloride ion are very serious, many research have been performed. In this study, it was experimentally investigated that the mechanical and diffusion characteristics of concrete substituted with ordinary portland cement, silica fume and blast furnace slag to investigate the chloride ingress characteristics with concrete quality. Chloride diffusion coefficients in concrete shows increasing tendency as w/c ratio increase. Also test results indicate that blend of admixture become lower chloride diffusion coefficients in concrete as compared with normal concrete.

촉진염화물 확산계수의 시간의존성을 고려한 고성능 콘크리트의 염화물 침투 해석기법 (Analysis Technique for Chloride Penetration in High Performance Concrete Behavior Considering Time-Dependent Accelerated Chloride Diffusivity)

  • 촉진 염화물 확산계수는 최근들어 염화물 거동 평가를 위하여 많이 사용되고 있다. 촉진 염화물 확산계수는 겉보기 확산계수와 마찬가지로 재령에 따라 감소하는데, 이 연구에서는 공극률을 이용하여 촉진확산계수의 감소를 구현하였다. DUCOM 프로그램을 이용하여 15 배합에 대한 공극률을 도출하였으며, 이를 회귀분석하여 재령 270일 동안 감소하는 염화물 확산계수를 모델링하였다. 또한 자유염화물과 구속염화물간의 관계인 비선형 구속능을 고려하여, 고성능 콘크리트내의 염화물 거동을 평가하였다. 기존의 실험자료인 180일간 염화물에 침지되어 있는 시편을 이용하여, 이 연구에서 제안한 기법의 검증을 수행하였다. 제안된 기법은 다양한 물-시멘트비 및 혼화재(고로슬래그 미분말 및 플라이애쉬)를 가진 고성능 콘크리트의 염화물 거동을 적절하게 평가하였다. 또한 혼화재료를 사용한 콘크리트의 경우, 확산계수의 시간의존성이 뚜렷하므로 염화물 거동 해석시 재령에 따른 염화물 확산계수의 감소를 반드시 구현해야 함을 알 수 있었다.

Genetic Diversity and Population Structure in Native Chicken Populations from Myanmar, Thailand and Laos by Using 102 Indels Markers

  • The genetic diversity of native chicken populations from Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos was examined by using 102 insertion and/or deletion (indels) markers. Most of the indels loci were polymorphic (71% to 96%), and the genetic variability was similar in all populations. The average observed heterozygosities ($H_O$) and expected heterozygosities ($H_E$) ranged from 0.205 to 0.263 and 0.239 to 0.381, respectively. The coefficients of genetic differentiation (Gst) for all cumulated populations was 0.125, and the Thai native chickens showed higher Gst (0.088) than Myanmar (0.041) and Laotian (0.024) populations. The pairwise Fst distances ranged from 0.144 to 0.308 among populations. A neighbor-joining (NJ) tree, using Nei's genetic distance, revealed that Thai and Laotian native chicken populations were genetically close, while Myanmar native chickens were distant from the others. The native chickens from these three countries were thought to be descended from three different origins (K = 3) from STRUCTURE analysis. Genetic admixture was observed in Thai and Laotian native chickens, while admixture was absent in Myanmar native chickens.

해상교량 주탑용 고성능 콘크리트의 기준재령 염소이온 확산계수 (Chloride Diffusion Coefficient at Reference Time for High Performance Concrete for Bridge Pylons in Marine Environment)

  • 기준재령 염소이온 확산계수를 측정하기 위하여 고성능 콘크리트 배합을 선정하고 공시체를 제작하였다. 배합은 해양환경에 건설되는 교량에 적합하도록 선정되었으며 배합설계 변수는 결합재 종류, 물-결합재비, 광물질 혼화재 치환율, 잔골재 종류, 고강도 및 고유동성을 얻기 위한 화학 혼화제 종류, 목표 슬럼프 또는 슬럼프 플로우이다. 시험 결과로부터 기준재령 염소이온 확산계수는 결합재 종류와 그 치환율에 따라 크게 다름을 확인하고, 결합재 종류와 치환율을 고려한 기준재령 확산계수 모델을 개발하였다. 개발된 모델의 확산계수를 기존 모델의 확산계수 및 추가 확산 계수 측정시험 결과 비교하여 개발된 모델의 타당성을 확인하였다.

Concrete mix design for service life of RC structures exposed to chloride attack

  • The purpose of this research is to propose a design technique of concrete mix proportions satisfying service life through genetic algorithm (GA) and neural network (NN). For this, thirty mix proportions and the related diffusion coefficients in high performance concrete are analyzed and fitness function for diffusion coefficient is obtained considering mix components like w/b (water to binder ratio), cement content, mineral admixture (slag, flay ash and silica fume) content, sand and coarse aggregate content. Through averaging the results of 10 times GA simulations, relative errors to the previous data decrease lower than 5.0% and the simulated mix proportions are verified with the experimental results. Assuming the durability design parameters, intended diffusion coefficient for intended service life is derived and mix proportions satisfying the service life are obtained. Among the mix proportions, the most optimized case which satisfies required concrete strength and the lowest cost is selected through GA algorithm. The proposed technique would be improved with the enhancement of comprehensive data set including wider the range of diffusion coefficients.

시멘트 페이스트의 유동 특성에 관한 평가방법 비교연구 (A Comparison Study Between Evaluation Methods on the Rheological Properties of Cement Paste)

  • This study investigates the influence of various blending factors on cement paste fluidity and find out the most effective evaluation method of cement paste flow, comparing flow test apparatuses such as ring flow(R-F), flow cone(F-C) and mini slump(M-S). A viscometer also measures the rheology coefficients to secure faithful numerical data. Firstly, series I examines cement paste, affected by several cement products and mineral admixture types in the range of W/B 40%, ordinary fluidity, and W/B 30%, high fluidity. In this series, the three types of cement product depended on companies, are randomly used and the mineral admixture, such as fly ash, blast furnace slag and silica fume, are incorporated in the cement paste, in response to the ratio of 10, 20, to 30%, respectively. In addition, series II studies various chemical admixture types, affecting the cement paste. This series is carried out with manufacturing companies and component types in the range of W/C 30%, high fluidity. For the manufacturing companies, randomly four products are used and for the component types, polycaboxylate, melamine, naphthalene and lignosulfonate type are chosen. Test results showed that in the fluidity test of cement paste considering various types of blending factors, R-F exhibited similar tendency with F-C and M-S. In the analysis of consistency curves measured by viscometer, the fluidity evaluation method using flow test apparatuses was significantly effective, except for the some of the low fluidity specimens. In conclusion of this study, R-F was the most convenient, faithful and effective fluidity evaluation method of cement paste.

혼화재 종류 및 치환율이 염수에 침지한 콘크리트의 내염성능 향상에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Effect of the Kinds and Replacement Ratios of Mineral Admixtures on the Development of Chloride Invasion Resistance Property of Concrete Immersed in Salt Water)

  • This paper investigate that the effect of the concrete containing mineral admixtures(pozzolanic materials such as fly-ash, ground granulated blast-furnace slag, silica fume and meta kaolin) on the resistance properties to chloride ion invasion. The purposed testing procedure was applied to the concrete added mineral admixtures for $3\sim4$ replacement ratios under W/B ratios ranged from 0.40 to 0.55. Specimens were immersed in $3.6\%$ NaCl solution for 330 days, and penetration depth, water soluble chloride contents and acid soluble chloride contents were measured in 28, 91, 182 and 330 days. Then, diffusion coefficient were calculated using total chloride contents. As a results. the kinds of mineral admixture and replacement ratios had a great effect on the resistance property of the concrete to chloride ion invasion compared with the plain concrete. And the optimal replacement ratios of mineral admixture had a limitation for each admixtures. The amount of acid soluble chloride ions and water soluble chloride ions were varied with the kinds of mineral admixtures and the penetration depth from the concrete skin. Chloride diffusion coefficient of each concretes decreased with the time elapsed. and the diffusion coefficients of the concrete immersed salt water for 330 days had a establishment with the compressive strength measured before immersing.

염해에 노출된 콘크리트의 내구수명 확보를 위한 최적 배합 도출에 대한 연구 - 유전자 알고리즘의 적용 (Study on Optimum Mixture Design for Service Life of RC Structure subjected to Chloride Attack - Genetic Algorithm Application)

  • 콘크리트의 염화물 확산계수의 제어는 염해에 노출된 콘크리트 구조물의 내구수명 확보에 필수적이며, 이를 위해 많은 연구가 진행되어 왔다. 본 연구는 목표 내구수명을 만족하는 목표확산계수를 도출하고 유전자 알고리즘을 통하여, 최적배합을 도출하는데 있다. 이를 위하여, 동일한 골재 및 혼화재를 사용한 30개의 배합과 그에 따른 염화물 확산계수를 분석하였으며, 27개를 대상으로 확산계수 예측식을 도출하였다. 확산계수 예측식의 변수로는 물-결합재비, 단위 혼화재량(슬래그, 플라이 애쉬, 실리카퓸), 단위 시멘트량, 단위 잔골재 및 굵은 골재량을 포함하도록 하였으며 나머지 3개의 배합에 대하여 검증을 수행하였다. 최적 함수식은 27개의 배합에 대하여 평균 18.7%의 오차와 16.0%의 변동계수를 보이고 있었다. 주어진 3개의 확산계수에 대하여, 유전자 알고리즘을 통하여 도출된 배합은 0.3%~12.2%의 오차범위를 가지며 각각의 배합인자를 도출하였다. 최종적으로 서로 다른 내구성 설계변수(목표내구수명, 피복두께, 표면염화물량, 혼화재량)와 노출환경(온도 및 습도)을 가정하여 목표 확산계수를 도출하였으며, 이에 만족하는 최적화된 콘크리트 배합을 제안하였다. 본 연구에서는 유전자 알고리즘을 이용하여, 내구성 콘크리트 배합도출에 대한 적용성을 평가하였으며, 제안된 기법은 다양한 확산계수의 범위를 가지는 광범위한 자료구축을 통하여 개선될 것이다.

Experimental Investigation of Clay Fly Ash Bricks for Gamma-Ray Shielding

  • This study aims to determine the effect of fly ash with a high replacing ratio of clay on the radiation shielding properties of bricks. Some interaction parameters (mass attenuation coefficients, half value layer, effective atomic number, effective electron density, and absorption efficiency) of clay fly ash bricks were measured with a NaI(Tl) detector at 661.6 keV, 1,173.2 keV, and 1,332.5 keV. For the investigation of their shielding behavior, fly ash bricks were molded using an admixture to clay. A narrow beam transmission geometry condition was used for the measurements. The measured values of these parameters were found in good agreement with the theoretical calculations. The elemental compositions of the clay fly ash bricks were analyzed by using an energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. At selected energies the values of the effective atomic numbers and effective electron densities showed a very modest variation with the composition of the fly ash. This seems to be due to the similarity of their elemental compositions. The obtained results were also compared with concrete, in order to study the effect of fly ash content on the radiation shielding properties of clay fly ash bricks. The clay fly ash bricks showed good shielding properties for moderate energy gamma rays. Therefore, these bricks are feasible and eco-friendly compared with traditional clay bricks used for construction.
