  • Joint transform correlator (JTC) has been the most suitable technique for real time pattern recognition. This paper proposes a new phase adjustment which adopts two steps of random phase adjustment in the spatial domain and additional phase adjustment in the Fourier domain. Simulated results are presented to show the optimum condition of the phase adjustment and the effect on the correlation peaks, the peak signal-to-noise ratio and the level of discrimination.

  • The joint transform correlator (JTC) has been the best known technique for pattern recognition and identification. This paper proposes a new technique of fringe adjustment by adopting a sinusoidal amplitude-modulated iterative filter convolved with an interference fringe pattern in the joint power spectrum (JPS) domain. The comparison of our new technique and other techniques is presented to show that the newly proposed technique can successfully improve both the correlation peaks and the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR). Simulated results of enhanced interference fringes are also presented.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine levels of pain, depression, and adjustment to military life in soldier who experienced low back pain, in order to produce fundamental data for the development of health improvement programs to prevent and manage low back pain in soldiers with low back pain. Methods: Subjects of this study consisted of 317 soldiers who had low back pain. Study instruments were Visual analog scale (VAS), the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D), and adjustment to military life scale. Collected data were analyzed by the SPSS Win 14.0 program. Results: Mean score of pain was 4.16 points, depression was 8.58 points, and adjustment to military life was 69.15 points. The level of pain was negatively related to adjustment to military life (r=-.241, p<.001) and positively related to depression (r=.262, p<.001). There was a negative relationship between depression and adjustment to military life (r=-.442, p<.001). Conclusion: Soldiers who had low back pain experienced higher levels of pain and depression and lower level of adjustment to military life. Therefore, further study is needed to develop and examine a nursing intervention to manage low back pain for them.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the adjustment process of patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis(ALS). Method: The data were collected from May 2007 to February 2008 through individual in-depth interviews with 4 ALS patients. The data collection and analysis were performed according to grounded theory methodology, as suggested by Strauss and Corbin. Results: 'Accepting the sick role' was the central phenomenon, which was derived from 'perceiving an intial symptom'. Therefore, the adjustment pattern was represented by using the different strategies, which were 'raising hope' and 'hoping to dye comfortably'. For taking a view of the future, ALS patients adopted the strategies of 'living positively', 'being treated hardly', 'joining in the experience', 'depending on the absolute being', 'recognizing the dying process'. Conclusion: This study provides guidance for the development of nursing interventions for patients with ALS.

  • The joint transform correlator (JTC) has been the best known technique for pattern recognition and identification. The JTC optically compares the reference image with the sample image then examines match or non-match by acquiring a correlation peak. However, the JTC technique has some problems such as weak correlation discrimination and noise which originates from the interference fringes in the Fourier transform plane. In order to solve these problems, this paper proposes a new technique of modifications of the interference fringes by adopting special iterative filters. Experimental results are presented to show that the proposed technique can successfully improve the correlation peaks and the level of discrimination.

  • This descriptive correlational study was carried to identify the relationship among social support, compliance, and psychosocial adjustment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The study was done with 100 rheumatoid arthritic patients who were visited in Outpatient clinic of university hospital in Taegu, Korea from the 23rd of February to the 20th of March in 1998. The Data were collected through person to person interviews which were performed by five researchers. The instruments used for this study were Yu's social support scale(1996), Cho's compliance scale(1987), and Kim's psychosocial adjustment scale(1997). The data was analyzed by using a t-test, Pearson correlation coefficient, ANOVA, and Tukey test with the SAS Program. The results of this study were as follows ; 1. The mean score of social support was 2.76 for 4 full marks, compliance was 3.20 for 5 full marks, and psychosocial adjustment was 2.26 for 4 full marks. 2. Hypothesis 1 : "The higher the social support degree, the higher the compliance degree of the rheumatoid arthritis patient". It was supported(r=0.54, p<0.001). Hypothesis 2 : "The higher the compliance degree, the higher the psychosocial adjustment degree of the rheumatoid arthritis patient". It was supported(r=0.34, p<0.001). Hypothesis 3 : "The higher the social support degree, the higher the psychosocial adjustment degree of the rheumatoid arthritis patient". It was supported(r=0.24, p<0.05). 3. In general, the spouse group compared to other groups was demonstrated as the most dependable group for patients to trust and expect support. And the sons and daughters group was shown higher than other groups in terms of social support(F=4.19, p=0.01). There was no difference in terms of compliance in degree. In the degree of psychosocial adjustment the highly educated group(more than high school) is a little higher than the lowly educated group(F=3.08, p=0.03). In the costs of medical care, the group that could afford was significant higher than the group which could not afford results in terms of the psychosocial adjustment degree(F=3.99, p=0.01). The outcome of this study is that the social support that related rheumatoid arthritic patients had an effect on the following compliance, and the following compliance helps psychosocial adjustment of patients. It also shows that social support related psychosocial adjustment. Therefore, to increase the level of psychosocial adjustment of rheumatoid arthritic patients, it will be effective in supportive nursing intervention to improve social support and compliance.

  • Peer status, friendship, and school adjustment were measured for 326 third and fourth graders (171 boys, 155 girls). School adjustment was assessed by academic performance, and social behaviors were rated by teachers while attitudes toward school were reported by children. Examination of the relative contributions of peer status and friendship to school adjustment revealed both unique and joint explanations. Children's academic performance was mainly explained by peer status; popular children had higher performance than rejected children. Attitudes toward school were more positive for children who reported higher friendship quality. Prosocial behaviors were higher for the popular group and for children with more stable reciprocal friends; aggressive behaviors were higher for the rejected group and competitive children with close friends; withdrawal behaviors were higher for the neglected group and children with few reciprocal friends.

  • Occlusion may change spontaneously but dental treatment or trauma in the patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) may also alter occlusion. This report presents three cases displaying occlusal changes. Review of literature emphasizes the significance of TMD treatment. Conservative treatment modalities such as counseling, medication, physical therapy and splint therapy may be selected as initial treatment options. Irreversible or invasive treatment, such as orthodontic, prosthodontic, and occlusal adjustment should not be attempted early. In case there is no response to conservative treatment, joint injection, muscle injection, arthrocentesis or arthroscopic surgery might be performed.

  • Fault-tolerant gait planning in legged locomotion is to design gaits with which legged robots can maintain static stability and motion continuity against a failure in a leg. For planning a robust and deadlock-free fault-tolerant gait, kinematic constraints caused by a failed leg should be closely examined with respect to remaining mobility of the leg. In this paper, based on the authors's previous results, deadlock avoidance scheme for fault-tolerant gait planning is proposed for a hexapod robot walking over even terrain. The considered fault is a locked joint failure, which prevents a joint of a leg from moving and makes it locked in a known position. It is shown that for guaranteeing the existence of the previously proposed fault-tolerant tripod gait of a hexapod robot, the configuration of the failed leg must be within a range of kinematic constraints. Then, for coping with failure situations where the existence condition is not satisfied, the previous fault-tolerant tripod gait is improved by including the adjustment of the foot trajectory. The foot trajectory adjustment procedure is analytically derived to show that it can help the fault-tolerant gait avoid deadlock resulting from the kinematic constraint and does not make any harmful effect on gait mobility. The post-failure walking problem of a hexapod robot with the normal tripod gait is addressed as a case study to show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

  • Temporomandibular joint disorder(TMJD) was mainly characterized with joint pain, motion limitation, joint sound, resulted from pathologic conditions in temporomandibular joint and around tissue. As temporomandibular joint is one of decisive factors determining the occlusion, disorders in temporomandibular joint may cause the occlusal changes. The causes of occlusal changes related with TMJD can be classified into 2 categories; (1) those related to progression of disorder, 2) those related to treatment of the disorder. The clinical manifestation of occlusal changes depend on their causes and affected site. Therefore, whenever possible, treatment should be directed to the relief of the underlying causes, However, it is not always possible to relieve the underlying conditions. Moreover, some occlusal changes may remain irreversible even after the considerable improvement in clinical symptoms. Regarding the treatment of the permanent occlusal changes, it has been reported that the extensive occlusal treatment including occlusal adjustment, prosthodontic treatment, orthodontic treatment should be applied. Here, we present with a case report of occlusal change caused by the progressive temporomandibular joint disorder, together with introducing the intermaxillary traction appliance as the possible treatment option.
