Natural Adhesives from Agricultural By-products: A Review

  • There still exist adhesives that have toxic compounds or consist of those materials in both our life and lots of industries. For instance, formaldehyde adhesive had been still used for woodworking and some medical adhesives had been considered as toxicity problems. In this situation, natural adhesives from raw materials have been suggested as an one of considerable interests. Natural adhesives in recent have been reported fabrication methods via biological materials such as proteins, celluloses, and starches. By-products derived from agricultural something have them richly and each has additional special properties. Using these properties to make natural adhesives, unique adhesives would be attained. In particular, rice-based adhesive is such a good example. Rice-based by-product adhesives have interestingly some pros pertaining to high adhesive strength, excellent water resistance and could dramatically be reduced a formaldehyde a harmful component of plywood. Hence, rice-based adhesive like glues could be applied to lots of industries including agricultural and biological technology. This review paper highlighted some recent development on natural adhesives as a promising biomaterial for agricultural and biological technology fields. 도교(桃膠)를 이용한 바이오 접착제의 합성 및 물성 평가 (Synthesis and Property Evaluation of Bio-adhesives Using Peach Gum(桃膠))

  • 복숭아나무 진액인 도교를 기반으로 한 목공예용 바이오 접착제 개발의 기초 연구로 144 가지 합성 조건 중 가장 우수한 물성을 나타내는 조성을 선택하여 천연 접착제 3 종, 합성 접착제 4 종과 비교 물성 평가를 진행해 적용 가능성을 확인해보고자 하였다. 연구 결과 최적의 합성 조건은 탈이온수 80 mL, NaOH 1.5 g, H2O2 1.65 g, pH 8.0 ~ 9.0, NaClO 0.5 g, H2BO2 0.5 g을 혼합하였을 때 가장 우수한 접착력을 확인할 수 있었다. 물성 평가 결과, 도교 접착제가 125.39 kgf/cm2의 접착 강도를 나타내었으며, 자외선에 의한 열화에서 △E*ab 2.75로 가장 낮은 변화와 우수한 가역성, 유해성 및 총호기성생균 시험 결과 불검출로 확인되었다. 이를 통해 도교 기반의 목공예용 바이오 접착제의 적용과 공예품 제작, 복원, 문화재 보존 시 사용되고 있는 천연 및 합성 접착제의 대체 재료로서의 가능성을 확인할 수 있었다.

Characteristics of electrically conductive adhesives filled with silver-coated copper

  • Conductive adhesives have been investigated for use in microelectronics packaging as a lead-free solder substitute due to their advantages, such as low bonding temperature. However, high resistivity and poor mechanical behavior may be the limiting factors for the development of conductive adhesives. The metal fillers and the polymer resins provide electrical and mechanical interconnections between surface mount device components and a substrate. As metal fillers used in conductive adhesives, silver is the most commonly used due to its high conductivity and the stability. However the cost of conductive adhesives with silver fillers is much higher than usual lead-free solders and silver has poor electro-migration performance. So, copper can be a promising candidate for conductive filler metal due to its low resistivity and low cost, but oxidation causes this metal to lose its conductivity. In this study, electrically conductive adhesives (ECAs) using surface modified copper fillers were developed. Especially, in order to overcome the problem associated with the oxidation of copper, copper particles were coated with silver, and the silver-coated copper was tested as a filler metal. Especially the effect of silver coating on the electrical resistance just after curing and after aging was investigated. As a result, it was found that the electrical resistance of ECA with silver-coated copper filler was clearly lower and more stable than that of ECA with pure copper filler after curing process. And, during high temperature storage test, the degradation rate of electrical resistance for ECA with silver coated copper filler was quite slower than that for ECA with pure copper filler.

수용성 접착제 경화 공정용 제습 막 건조기 시스템의 효과 (The Effects of the Dehumidifying Membrane Dryer for the Curing Processes of Waterborne Adhesives)

  • 수용성 접착제의 경화 공정은 일반적으로 열풍건조기를 대부분 사용하고 있다. 열풍건조기는 열에 의해서만 수용성 접착제를 경화시키는 방법으로서, 충분한 경화를 위해 $100^{\circ}C$ 이상의 높은 온도와 최소 20 min 이상의 경화 공정을 요구하는 단점을 가지고 있다. 경화 과정 중에 온도가 너무 높을 경우, 접착제의 점도가 낮아져 접착에 방해가 될 수 있으며, 경화 과정 중에 발생하는 수분에 의해 경화 조건이 일정하게 유지되기 어렵다. 본 연구에서는 제습 막 건조기 시스템을 활용하여, 수용성 접착제의 경화 공정을 일정하게 유지시키고 공정 중의 제습을 통해 건조공기의 공급으로 경화시간을 단축하고자 한다. 제습 막 건조기 시스템을 활용한 최적의 경화 조건을 찾고, 제습 막 건조기 시스템의 효과를 확인하기 위하여, 제습 막 건조기와 강제순환 건조기를 적용한 경화 과정을 통해 접착력(peel strength)을 측정하여 비교 분석해 보았다.

The Recent Tendency of Environmentally-friendly Tackifiers

  • It is a main trend not to use organic solvents in the adhesive industry from the recent environmental and safe points of view. For example, water-based, hot-melt, or UV curable adhesives are being investigated. Several different kinds of tackifiers that are formulated in the adhesives in order to give them more functional properties like initial tack and higher adhesion, etc., have been proposed to meet the recent trend. Firstly, the characteristics and fundamental properties of the respective materials are presented. In Japan, the trend to develop the water-based adhesives is most remarkable. While the environmental regulations are getting harder, Arakawa Chemical has been spending a lot of energy for the research, and developed toluene-free and solvent free tackifier dispersions that are presented precisely.

Bond between FRP formworks and concrete-effect of surface treatments and adhesives

  • FRP stay-in-place (SIP) formworks are designed as a support for casting concrete and as a tension reinforcement when concrete is cured. Bond development between SIP formwork and concrete is critical for FRP tension element to be effective. This paper reports the bond strength between FRP formwork and concrete for different interfacial treatments. A novel experimental setup is prepared for observing the bond behaviour. Three different adhesives with varying workability have been investigated. Along with the load-deformation characteristics, bond slip and strains in the formwork have been measured. A finite element numerical simulation was conducted for the experiments to understand the underlying mechanism. The results show that the adhesive bonding has the best bond strength.

혼합물 실험계획과 다수 반응변수 최적화를 통한 속경화 초저온접착제 개발 사례 (A Case Study of Developing Rapid-Hardening Ultra-Low Temperature Adhesives by Mixture Design and Multiple Response Optimization)

  • Purpose: In this paper we present a case study of developing fast curing adhesives for insulation material of LNG carriers using an extreme vertices design with four mixture components. Three material properties are considered - shear strength, viscosity, and tensile strength. In the optimization experiment, we used hardness instead of tensile strength due to shortage of specimens. Methods: We employ four-factor extreme vertices design with 19 runs and desirability function approach for simultaneously optimizing three responses. After selecting optimal condition of the mixture components, we do confirmation experiments to verify the reproducibility of the optimal condition under manufacturing circumstance. Results: Simultaneous optimal condition for the three responses, that is, shear strength, viscosity, and harness is obtained. At the optimal condition, confirmation experiments are executed in manufacturing circumstance. The variation for the shear strength is not satisfactory, which is due to the variation of the humidity. Conclusion: At the optimal condition three material properties are satisfactory. To reduce the variability for the shear strength, robust design is needed.

셀룰로오스계 목재 추출 성분을 이용한 목공예용 천연 접착제의 개발 및 적용 가능성에 대한 복합적 기반 연구 - 유근피·황촉규·도교 중심으로 - (A Study on Multiple Bases for Development of Natural Adhesives for Woodcraft using Cellulose Extracts from Wood and their Application Potential - Focused on Salicis radicis cortex, hibiscus, Chinese wild peach resin -)

  • 본 연구는 현재 목공예품 제작 시 사용성이 편하고 경제적이라는 이유로 합성 PVAc계 접착제가 주로 사용된다. 본 연구는 합성 PVAc계 접착제의 단점 중 작업자나 사용자에게 미치는 인체 안정성과 환경 유해성 등에 대한 문제점을 개선해보고자 하는 연구에서 시작되었다. 본 연구의 목적은 이러한 문제점이 대두되기 시작하면서 친환경에 대한 사회적 관심이 증대되고 수요도 급격히 증가되고 있는 상황으로 천연 접착제에 대한 연구를 통해 친환경 접착제를 개발하는 것이다. 따라서 본 논문은 목공예용 천연 접착제의 개발을 위해 천연 접착 소재인 셀룰로오스계 목재 추출물을 이용해 목공예용 천연 접착제를 개발하기 위한 기반 연구를 시도하였다. 연구결과 및 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 목공예용 천연 접착제 개발을 위한 기반 물성인 접착 강도에서 기존 재료 보다 약 0.2 ~ 4 배 증진된 효과를 보여주었으며, 기존 재료와 유사하거나 안정적인 pH 값을 확인하였다. 또한 우수한 가역성을 나타내어 목공예용 접착제로서의 기초적인 물성은 확인되었으며, 자외선 열화에 대한 내구성도 약 1.5 ~ 8.5 배 우수한 결과값을 확인하였다. 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 셀룰로오스계 목재 추출물의 정제 기술 개발과 기능성 부여를 통한 접착강도, 항균성, 보존성 등에 대한 지속적인 연구가 이루어진다면 기존에 사용되어온 재료에 비해 성능이 개선된 목공예용 천연 접착제가 개발될 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
