  • Hydrophilic reactive hot-melt polyurethane adhesive(HRHA) using a hydrophilic polyol having different molecular weight and NCO index was synthesized. This HRHA was synthesized using Polyethylene glycol(PEG) as a hydrophilic polyol, Polypropylene glycol(PPG) and Polycaprolactone diol(PCL) as hydrophobic polyols, and Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate(MDI) as an isocyanate. The changes in IR spectrum, viscosity and thermal properties of HRHA with different PEG molecular weights and NCO index were investigated, and the tensile strength and elongation of the HRHA casting film and the peel strength, moisture permeability and water pressure of the HRHA coated fabric were confirmed. In this experiment, as the molecular weight of PEG and NCO index increased, the adhesive strength, tensile strength, elongation and moisture permeability was increased but viscosity and Tg was decreased.

  • In order to examine the changes in the appearance properties and the post-adhesion appearance properties of Hanji yarn blended fabrics : 100% Hanji yarn fabric, two kinds of cotton / Hanji yarn blended fabrics and 100% cotton fabric, were selected and fused with three kinds of interlinings. After fusing, changes of standardized KES values were examined. 1. W/T, B/W of Hanji yarn blended fabrics was higher than that cotton fabric. WC/W, 2HB/W, 2HB/B, and 2HG/G values of Hanji yarn blended fabrics are lower than cotton fabric. This means that the Hanji yarn was mixed, shape retention, wrinkle recovery was improved, and the drape property was lowered. 2. After fusing, W/T, shape retention, wrinkle recovery of Hanji yarn blended fabrics increased, and WC/W values of Hanji yarn blended fabrics decreased. The wrinkle recovery property of Hanji yarn blended fabrics were improved; however, the 2HG/G value of Hanji yarn fabric increased due to fusing, and the wrinkle recovery property of Hanji yarn fabric decreased. 3. In the selection of adhesive core, I1 adhesive core is excellent in terms of shape stability and wrinkle recovery; however, an I3 adhesive core is recommended for drape and silhouette formation. When the fabric of the adhesive core was PET, it was found to penetrate better between the fabrics during adhesion than the case of cotton fabrics.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze, using the finite element method, the durability of damaged and repaired structures under the effect of mechanical loading coupled with environmental conditions (water absorption and/or temperature). The study is based on the hybrid patch repair technique, considering several parameters based on the J integral to observe the behavior of the adhesive in transferring load from a damaged plate to the repair patch. The results clearly show that water absorption and increased temperature cause degradation of the mechanical properties of the adhesive, leading to an increase in its plasticization, which is beneficial for the assembly's strength. However, the degradation of the adhesive's properties due to aging in the repair results in poor load transfer from the damaged area to the patch. The findings of this study allowed the authors to conclude that the [0°]8 sequence consistently offers the best performance, with the lowest J integral values and superior crack resistance. The lowest the J integral for the [0°]8 stacking sequence is typically 3-7% lower than that of the [0/-45/45/90]S and [0/-45/90/45]S sequences at elevated temperatures. At 60℃, the J integral increases by approximately 3-6% compared to 40℃ and 20, depending on the aging duration and stacking sequences.

  • Gambir is a non-wood forest product with a potential of being used as wood adhesive, due to about 33% catechin in it. Meanwhile, catechins and sucrose have not been studied as adhesives. Therefore, basic characteristics of gambir-sucrose adhesives were investigated. In this research, adhesives were prepared by dissolving gambir and sucrose in distilled water, at different blending ratios of the gambir/sucrose such as 100/0, 75/25, 50/50, and 25/75 wt%. Furthermore, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was employed to determine the gambir chemical compositions, and Fourier transform-infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was carried out to identify chemical bonds. Particleboards with a target density of 0.8 g/㎤ were then manufactured by hot-pressing for 10 min at 200℃. The internal bond (IB) strength of particleboard was subsequently measured. Based on the GC-MS analysis, 31.11% of catechin was identified. In addition, the viscosity, density, solid content, and gelation time of the adhesives, and insoluble matter content (IMC) in boiling water were 7.30~33.24 mPa.s, 1.2~1.3 g/㎤, 25.56~28.44%, 73~420 min, and 29.75~62.10%, respectively. Adding sucrose to the adhesive was observed to raise the IMC from 49.05 to 62.10%, at 180℃ and 200℃. FT-IR analysis showed that the gambir absorption peaks occurred at approximately 1620 cm-1, assigned to the C=O stretching of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, which tended to increase with the addition of sucrose. The reaction between gambir and sucrose was observed in the form of the dimethylene ether bridge. The 25/75 wt% gambir-sucrose adhesives and 200℃ hot-pressed temperature resulted in the highest IB strength (0.89 MPa), and met the requirement of JIS A5908-2003 type 18. Consequently, the gambir-sucrose adhesive could be used as a particleboard adhesive.

  • The structural adhesive have been manufactured for improvement of bonding process between CFRP and metal. The optimal condition for bonding process were investigated by evaluating the lap shear strength with amount of adhesive and curing time and the surface treatment of the CFRP. To confirm proper adhesion conditions, the fracture sections between CFRP and metal was observed using reflection microscope. Not only the improvement of the adhesion condition was important, but surface treatment on CFRP was also important. The optimal curing temperature was at $180^{\circ}C$ for 20 minutes. The improvement for adhesive property was confirmed After surface treatment on CFRP. The optimal amount of structural adhesive for bonding between CFRP and metal was $1.5{\times}10^{-3}g/mm^2$. Through the optimization of bonding process, the improvement of mechanical property over 10% is confirmed in comparison with existing adhesive.

  • An environmentally friendly water-based pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) was designed in an attempt to replace the solvent-based adhesive for dry lamination used in flexible food packaging films. Instead of using a low molecular weight surfactant, which may have variable material properties, a high molecular weight dispersant was used for emulsification. A polymeric nano-dispersant (PND) was synthesized using solution polymerization, and it was used as a micelle seed in the surfactant, resulting in the synthesis of a core/shell grafted acrylic adhesive. The shell and core exhibited different $T_g$ values, so that the initial adhesion strength and holding power were complemented by the film's flexibility, which is required to provide good adhesion of thin films. Results showed that the PSA designed in this study using the PND instead of traditional low molecular weight surfactant had adhesive properties applicable to the flexible packaging with appropriate tack.

  • In this study, the three species (Populus euramericana, Pinus densiflora and Quercus variabilis) were cut to difference (0, 0.15, 0.3, 0.45 mm) between the size of tip and that of root of the finger (DSTR) and jointed with poly vinyl acetate (PVA) and resorcinol-phenol resin (RPR). We described the relationship between the bending strength properties of finger DSTR and the acoustic emission (AE) generated during the bending test. The results were as follows: The AE generation time of finger-jointed specimens with RPR adhesive was earlier than that with PVA adhesive. The AE cumulative event count of finger-jointed specimens with RPR adhesive continuously increased with increasing load and the event count was much more than that with PVA adhesive. Also, the AE cumulative event count for resorcinol-phenol resin adhesive obtained from low load level was abundant. The AE wave in finger-jointed specimens with RPR adhesive could be detected in the below proportional limit load. Therefore, AE signals from bending test are useful for the estimation of strength in finger DSTR specimens.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate the mechanical properties of relined and non-relined fiberglass posts when cemented to root canal dentin using a conventional dual-cure resin cement or a self-adhesive resin cement. Materials and Methods: Two types of resin cements were utilized: conventional and self-adhesive. Additionally, 2 cementation protocols were employed, involving relined and non-relined fiberglass posts. In total, 72 bovine incisors were cemented and subjected to push-out bond strength testing (n = 10) followed by failure mode analysis. The cross-sectional microhardness (n = 5) was assessed along the root canal, and interface analyses (n = 3) were conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data from the push-out bond strength and cross-sectional microhardness tests were analyzed via 3-way analysis of variance and the Bonferroni post-hoc test (α= 0.05). Results: For non-relined fiberglass posts, conventional resin cement exhibited higher pushout bond strength than self-adhesive cement. Relined fiberglass posts yielded comparable results between the resin cements. Type II failure was the most common failure mode for both resin cements, regardless of cementation protocol. The use of relined fiberglass posts improved the cross-sectional microhardness values for both cements. SEM images revealed voids and bubbles in the incisors with non-relined fiberglass posts. Conclusions: Mechanical properties were impacted by the cementation protocol. Relined fiberglass posts presented the highest push-out bond strength and cross-sectional microhardness values, regardless of the resin cement used (conventional dual-cure or self-adhesive). Conversely, for non-relined fiberglass posts, the conventional dual-cure resin cement yielded superior results to the self-adhesive resin cement.

  • Hot melt adhesive based on the polyamide resin was studied to improve the conventional hot melt adhesives such as ethylene-vinyl acetate which have inherent problems against creep and heat resistance. It was found that the terpolymer of nylons6, nylon66, and nylon12 or the nylon blend instead of nylon homopolymer was suitable base resin for hot melt adhesives, since the disruption of regularity in the polymer chains reduced the crystallinity, resulting in lower melting point and melt viscosity. Also, the rheological properties of the polyamide based hot melt adhesive could be controlled by the incorporation of terpene resin, butyl benzyl phthalate, and paraffin wax. The results of melt viscosities and tensile properties of adhesive itself indicated that the optimum adhesion properties could be obtained through the blending of CM831/843P resins with weight ratio 75/25~50/50. The adhesion between steel and steel was tested by using lap shear geometry. It was found that the surface roughness of steel affected the adhesion strength.
