Effects of Maleinized Polybutadiene on the Elongation and Impact Peel Strength of Epoxy Resins

  • The effect of maleinized polybutadiene (MPB) on the mechanical properties of epoxy resins including adhesion strength, elongation and impact peel resistance was investigated in this study, in which MPB is an anhydride-functionalized polybutadiene prepolymer. Different molecular weights (3.1K and 5.6K) of MPB were added to diglycidyl ether bisphenol-A (DEGBA), an epoxy resin, to increase its impact peel strength and elongation. At various loading percent (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 wt%) of MPB in the epoxy resin, significant improvements of mechanical properties were observed. According to the comparative analysis results, the modified epoxy system with 15 wt% (3.1K) MPB exhibited the highest lap shear strength, about 40% higher than that of neat epoxy. The tensile strength and elongation steadily and simultaneously increased as the loading percent of MPB increased. The impact peel strengths at low (-40℃) and room (23℃) temperatures were substantially improved by MPB incorporation into epoxy resins. Reactive and flexible MPB prepolymer seems to construct strong nano-structured networks with rigid epoxy backbones without sacrificing the tensile and adhesion strengths while increasing impact resistance/toughness and elongation properties. For higher impact peel while maintaining adhesion and tensile strengths, approximately 10-15 wt% MPB loading in epoxy resin was suggested. Consequently, incorporation of functionalized MPB prepolymer into epoxy system is an easy and efficient way for improving some crucial mechanical properties of epoxy resins.

  • In this paper, the adhesion characteristics between a fused silica without or with an anti-sticking layer and a thermoplastic polymer film used in thermal NIL were investigated experimentally in order to identify the release performance of the anti-sticking layer. The anti-sticking layers were derived from fluoroalkylsilanes, (1H, 1 H, 2H, 2H-perfluorooctyl)trichlorosilane ($F_{13}-OTS$) and (3, 3, 3-trifluoropropyl)trichlorosilane (FPTS), and coated on the silica surface in vapor phase. The commercial polymers, mr-I 7020 and 8020 (micro resist technology, GmbH), for thermal NIL were spin-coated on Si substrate with a rectangular island which was fabricated by conventional microfabrication process to achieve small contact area and easy alignment of flat contact sur- faces. Experimental conditions were similar to the process conditions of thermal NIL. When the polymer film on the island was separated from the silica surface after imprint process, the adhesion force between the silica surface and the polymer film was measured and the surfaces of the silica and the polymer film after the separation were observed. As a result, the anti-sticking layers remarkably reduced the adhesion force and the surface damage of polymer film and the chain length of silane affects the adhesion characteristics. The anti-sticking layers derived from FPTS and $F_{13}-OTS$ reduced the adhesion force per unit area to 38% and 16% of the silica sur-faces without an anti-sticking layer, respectively. The anti-sticking layer derived from $F_{13}-OTS$ was more effective to reduce the adhesion, while both of the anti-sticking layers prevented the surface damages of the polymer film. Finally, it is also found that the adhesion characteristics of mr-I 7020 and mr-I 8020 polymer films were similar with each other.

  • 아크릴레이트 기반의 점착제를 가교 시키는 기술은 다양하게 소개되어 왔다. 본 연구에서는 에폭시 변성 단량체와 메틸아지리딘 가교제를 활용하여 높은 가교 밀도를 가지는 아크릴 구조체를 만들었다. 베이스구조체를 제조하기 위해서 빠른 제조 공정이 가능하고 무용제 공정이 가능한 UV 중합 기술을 활용했다. FT-IR, 경화거동 및 접착특성 평가를 통해 UV경화도 및 2차경화 온도에 따른 특성 변화를 확인하고자 하였다. 겔분율은 선경화 $800mJ/cm^2$, 120도 후 경화온도 조건에서 50%이상 확보할 수 있었으며, 180도 경화조건에서 80%이상 확보 할 수 있었다. 경화 시간이 길어짐에 따라 경화도가 100%에 도달하였으며 이를 통해 열경화를 통한 2차 경화가 효과적임을 확인 할 수 있었다.

Effect of fiber-matrix adhesion on the fracture behavior of a carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic-modified epoxy matrix

  • In this study, the fracture behavior of a thermoplastic-modified epoxy resin reinforced with continuous carbon fibers for two levels of fiber-matrix adhesion was performed. A carbon fiber with commercial sizing was used and also treated with a known silane, (3-glycidoxy propyl trimethoxysilane) coupling agent. Toughness was determined using the double cantilever test, together with surface analysis after failure using scanning electron microscope. The presence of polysulfone particles improved the fracture behavior of the composite, but fiber-matrix adhesion seemed to play a very important role in the performance of the composite material. There appeared to be a synergy between the matrix modifier and the fiber-matrix adhesion coupling agent.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the adhesion of concrete pipe lining using polymer mortar. The polymer mortars with various mix proportions are prepared, and tested for flexural and compressive strengths, adhesion in tension, and the aspects of lining surface and workability are evaluated. Form the test results, it is apparent that the appropriate polymer mortars of lining to concrete pipe can be produced. The flexural and compressive strengths of polymer mortar for lining are affected by type of resin, and aggregates content, and water content at the surface of concrete pipe is important factor for improvement in adhesion of polymer mortar. It is obvious that the economical polymer mortars having an excellent cost performance ration can be produced through this study.

  • It has been applied the self adhesion waterproofing sheet which is developed from exist asphalt waterproofing sheet by heat and torch in domestic construction field. However, the problem of waterproofing have constantly happened due to air pocket condition and defect of joint part in waterproofing construction. Therefore, in this study, we would like to analyze the field application as testing in side of materials and construction method of self adhesion butyl rubber sheet and study of the materials performance.

Interfaces Between Rubber and Metallic or Textile Tire Cords

  • Bonding metal and textile components to rubber has always posed a problem. In this paper, an attempt had been made to modify textile and metal surfaces for bonding with rubber. The metal surfaces were modified using silane coupling agents and textile fibers were modified using plasma polymerization techniques. Some results on adhesion of metals to a range of sulfur-cured rubber compounds using a combination of organofunctional silanes are given here. The treatment was not only effective for high-sulfur compounds but also for low-sulfur com pounds as used in engine mounts and even for some semi-EV compounds. Coatings of plasmapolymerized pyrrole or acetylene were deposited on aramid and polyester tire cords. Standard pull-out force adhesion measurements were used to determine adhesion of tire cords to rubber compounds. The plasma coatings were characterized by various techniques and the performance results are explained in an interpenetrating network model.

  • In order to examine the adhesion characteristics of road pavement according to environmental conditions, the freezing time of cement mortar and the adhesion performance between ice and pavement were evaluated depending on the presence or absence of polymer and water repellent. As a result of measuring the ice formation time, it was found that there was no delay when a polymer was added, but the complete freezing time was delayed when a water repellent was added. As a result of measuring the strength of ice adhesion, it was found that the bonding force between ice and the surface of the test body was greatly generated in the test body without water repellent. In the case of a test specimen to which a water repellent was added, it was found that the bonding strength between the test specimen surface and ice was reduced.

  • When a metal sprayed film of several hundred ㎛ on the concrete surface is possible to 80 dB of shielding effect electromagnetic waves (ElectroMagnetic Pulse, EMP). Therefore, in this study, as a way to secure EMP shielding performance by applying a metal spray coating showing excellent EMP shielding performance to a concrete structure, the metal spray welding efficiency and thin film adhesion performance according to the concrete spray direction and surface treatment method were evaluated. Metal sprayed efficieny according to the metal spraying direction and method was confirmed that the difference was insignificant by applying the roughening agent. However, the method of strengthening the concrete surface and applying the sealing agent show maximum adhesion strength of 3.98 MPa compared to other methods, and it is judged that this method can be utilized for the metal spraying method for concrete EMP shielding.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate waterproofing performance of self adhesive sheet combined polymer resin and poly-iso butylene. For the performance estimation of external waterproofing of concrete underground structures, there can be required various properties such as adhesion strength, hair crack resistance, repeat low and high temperature test, and so on. In this study, there engineering properties of composite system using polymer resin and poly-iso butylene were examined and could be confirmed to satisfy the guidelines of KS. Especially, it was turn out that the adhesion properties was excellent and high crack-resistance up to 1.49mm will be perform.
