Recently, many researches have been focused on multi-view video applications and services such as wireless video surveillance networks, wireless video sensor networks and wireless mobile video. In multi-view video signal processing, to exploit the strong correlation between images acquired by different cameras plays great role in developing a core technique of multi-view video coding. This paper proposes an adaptive multi-view video interpolation technique which is applicable for multi-view distributed video coding without requiring any cooperation amongst the cameras. The proposed algorithm estimates the non-linear moving blocks and employs disparity compensated view prediction, and then fills in the unreliable blocks. Through computer simulations, it is shown that the proposed method outperforms the conventional methods.
HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) is a technique that adapts its video quality to network conditions for providing Quality of Experience. In the HAS approach, a video content is encoded at multiple bitrates and the encoded video content is divided into several video segments. A HAS player estimates the network bandwidth and adjusts the video bitrate based on estimated bandwidth. However, the segment scheduler in the conventional HAS player requests video segments periodically without considering TCP. If the waiting duration for the next segment request is quite long, the TCP connection can be initialized and it restarts slow-start. Slow-start causes the reduction in TCP throughput and consequentially leads to low-quality video streaming. In this study, we propose a TCP-aware segment scheduling scheme to improve performance of HAS service. The proposed scheme adjusts request time for the next video request to prevent initialization of TCP connection and also considers the point of scheduling time. The simulation proves that our scheme improves the Quality of Service of the HAS service without buffer underflow issue.

Recently, due to the prevalence of various mobile devices and broadband wireless networks, a significant interests and demands for multimedia streaming services over the Internet have been increasing. However, it is difficult to transmit continuous multimedia stream when mobile terminals are moving. Therefore, in order to deploy mobile IPTV service in the broadband wireless network, efficient wireless resource utilization and seamless QoE (Quality of Experience) offers to the users are an important issue. In this paper, we propose a network based adaptive streaming scheme, called MARC (Mobile Adaptive Rate Control), which controls the quality of the video and rate of the video based on the status of the wireless channel. The proposed scheme uses awareness information of the wireless channel status and controls transmitting streaming video which is suitable for the wireless channel status and mobile station location, in order to provide a seamless video playback for mobile environment in addition to improving the quality of a streaming service. The proposed MARC scheme alleviates the discontinuity of video playback and allocates suitable client buffer in broadband wireless network. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme.
A stereoscopic 3D video service is able to provide a 3D video service while keeping backward compatibility with the existing 2D video service. In the terrestrial digital television (DTV) system, a stereoscopic video codec is required to have high coding efficiency in order to provide a 3D video service in the same channel capacity. A hybrid codec consisting of MPEG-2 for base video and H.264/AVC or HEVC for 3D auxiliary video is considered. Furthermore, Non-Real-Time (NRT) delivery of stereoscopic video is also considered as a service scenario for 3DTV services to overcome the limited bandwidth. In this paper, we propose a stereoscopic video coding scheme using adaptive loop filter (ALF) which had been considered in HEVC as a pre-/post-filter for enhancing coding efficiency in NRT-based 3DTV services. In order to apply ALF as a post-filter to the reconstructed additional view coded by H.264/AVC, we devise a method in which ALF is adaptively applied based on a structure determined by using macroblock (MB) coding information such as MB mode type and reference index instead of coding unit (CU) structure on which ALF is applied in the HEVC. Experimental results shows that the proposed stereoscopic video coding scheme applying ALF obtains up to 24.9% gain of bit saving.
HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) Adaptive Streaming is gaining attention because it changes bitrates to adapt changing network conditions. Since HAS (HTTP Adaptive Streaming) client downloads the video data based on TCP (Transmission Control Protocol), it estimates incorrectly the available bandwidth and leads to an unnecessary video quality change in long-delay networks. In this paper, we propose a buffer-based quality control scheme in order to improve the service quality and smooth playback in the HAS. The proposed scheme estimates accurately the available bandwidth based on a modified streaming model that considers network delay. It also calculates the sustainability of the video quality to prevent an unnecessary quality change and determines the inter-request time on the basis of the buffer status. Through the simulation, we prove that our scheme improves the QoS (Quality of Service) of the HAS service and controls the video quality smoothly in long-delay networks.
Recently HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) adaptive streaming services have been the subject of much attention. The video quality control scheme of conventional HTTP adaptive streaming services estimates bandwidth using segment throughput and smooths out the sample of segment throughput. However, the conventional scheme has the problem of QoE (Quality of experience) degradation occurring with buffer underflow and frequent quality change due to the fixed number of samples. In order to solve this problem, we propose a video quality control scheme based on segment throughput and buffer occupancy. The proposed scheme determines the number of samples according to the variation of segment throughput. The proposed scheme also controls video quality based on the threshold of bitrate to keep stable buffer occupancy. The simulation results show that proposed scheme improves QoE by preventing buffer underflow and decreasing quality change when compared with the conventional scheme.
Adaptability is an important issue in video streaming over mobile environments, since the clients may request videos with great differences in their workload. In this paper, we propose the issues in limited bandwidth scheduling for efficient MPEG-4 video stream transmission over a mobile or wireless network. In the phase of admission control, the amount of bandwidth allocated to serve a video request is the mean bandwidth requirement of its requested video. The dynamic allocation of bandwidth in the phase of scheduling depends on the playback buffer levels of the clients with an objective to make it more adaptive to the playback situation of individual clients. In the proposed RTA scheduling protocol, more bandwidth may be allocated temporarily to the client whose buffer level is low. By employing the buffer level based scheduling policy, this protocol attempts to maximize the real-time performance of individual playback while minimizing the impact of transient overloading. Extensive simulation experiments have been performed to investigate the performance characteristics of the RTA protocol as comparing with BSBA protocol. This RTA protocol shows the better performance by transferring more frames than BSBA protocol.Computer simulations reveals that the standard deviation of the bit rate error of the proposed scheme is 50% less than that of the conventional method.
In this paper, the dynamic buffering based smart OTT platform was proposed, and analyzed for adaptive bit-rate video delivery with the optimization of HLS (HTTP Live Streaming). This platform consists of the software platform between sever and client which detects the bandwidth capacity, and adjusts the quality of the streaming for multiple bit-rates resolutions. In order to apply adaptive buffering, two buffers are added to the basic HLS player, and each buffer is responsible for constantly buffering a previous and the next channels relative to the current channel. This adaptive transmitting with smart OTT platform is superior to delivering a static video file at a single buffering, because the video stream of adaptive double buffers can be switched streaming according to client's available network speed. As a result, this proposed smart OTT can be cooperated to the application of HLS server with segmented H.265 MPEG-2 TS video & m3u8 files with its information based on the optimized transmission channel state of live and VOD, and applied to PLC transmission, too.
Increase of hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP)-based video popularity causes that broadband and Internet service providers' links transmit mainly multimedia content. Network planning, traffic engineering or congestion control requires understanding of the statistical properties of network traffic; therefore, it is desirable to investigate the characteristic of traffic traces generated, among others, by systems which employ adaptive bit-rate streaming. In our work, we investigate traffic originating from 120 client-server pairs, situated in an emulated laboratory environment, and multiplexed onto a single network link. We show that the structure of the traffic is distinct from the structure generated by first and second generation of HTTP video systems, and furthermore, not similar to the structure of general Internet traffic. The obtained traffic exhibits negative correlations, anti-persistence, and its distribution function is skewed to the right. Furthermore, we show that the traffic generated by clients employing the same or similar play-out strategies is positively correlated and synchronised (clustered), whereas traffic originated from different play-out strategies shows negative or no correlations.
The data models which express all types of video information physically and logically. and the definition of spatiotemporal relationship of video data objects In This paper, we classifies meta-model for efficient management on spatiotemporal relationship between two objects in video image data, suggests meta-models based on Rambaugh's OMT technique, and expanded user model to apply the adaptive model, established from hyper-media or web agent to VOD. The proposed meta-model uses data's special physical feature: the effects of camera's and editing effects of shot, and 17 spatial relations on Allen's 13 temporal relations, topology and direction to include logical presentation of spatiotemporal relation for possible spatiotemporal reference and having unspecified applied mediocrity.
