  • A high impedance fault(HIF) is one of the serious problems facing the electric utility industry today. Because of the high impedance of a downed conductor under some conditions these faults are not easily detected by over-current based protection devices and can cause fires and personal hazard. In this paper a new method for detection of HIF which uses adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) is proposed. Since arcing fault current shows different changes during high and low voltage portion of conductor voltage waveform we firstly divided one cycle of fault current into equal spanned four data windows according to the mangnitude of conductor voltage. Fast fourier transform(FFT) is applied to each data window and the frequency spectrum of current waveform are chosen asinputs of ANFIS after input selection method is preprocessed. Using staged fault and normal data ANFIS is trained to discriminate between normal and HIF status by hybrid learning algorithm. This algorithm adapted gradient descent and least square method and shows rapid convergence speed and improved convergence error. The proposed method represent good performance when applied to staged fault data and HIFLL(high impedance like load)such as arc-welder.

  • This study aimed to develop AI- (Artificial Intelligence) based thermal control logics and test their performance for identifying the optimal thermal control method in buildings. For this objective, a conventional Two-Position On/Off logic and two AI-based variable logics, which applied ANN (Artificial Neural Network) and ANFIS (Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System), have developed. Performance of each logic was tested in a typical two-story residential building in U.S.A. using the computer simulation incorporating MATLAB and IBPT (International Building Physics Toolbox). In the analysis of the test results, AI-based control logic presented the advanced thermal comfort with stability compared to the conventional logic while they did not show significant energy saving effects. In conclusion, the predictive and adaptive AI-based control logics have a potential to maintain interior air temperature more comfortably, and the findings in this study could be a solid foundation for identifying the optimal thermal control method in buildings.

  • It is very important to forecast water supply for reasonal operation and management of water utilities. In this paper, water supply forecasting models using artificial intelligence are developed. Artificial intelligence models shows better results by using Temperature(t), water supply discharge (t-1) and water supply discharge (t-2), which are expressed by neural network(LMNNWS; Levenberg-Marquardt Neural Network for Water Supply, MDNNWS; MoDular Neural Network for Water Supply) and neuro fuzzy(ANASWS; Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference Systems for Water Supply). ANFISWS model which is applied for water supply forecasting shows stable application to the variable water supply data. As results, MDNNWS model shows the highest overall accuracy among proposed water supply forecasting models and the lowest estimation error with the order of ANFISWS, LMNNWS model.

  • The paper describes the study of global approximate optimization utilizing soft computing techniques such as genetic algorithms (GA's), neural networks (NN's), and fuzzy inference systems(FIS). GA's provide the increasing probability of locating a global optimum over the entire design space associated with multimodality and nonlinearity. NN's can be used as a tool for function approximations, a rapid reanalysis model for subsequent use in design optimization. FIS facilitates to handle the quantitative design information under the case where the training data samples are not sufficiently provided or uncertain information is included in design modeling. Properties of soft computing techniques affect the quality of global approximate model. Evolutionary fuzzy modeling (EFM) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) are briefly introduced for structural optimization problem in this context. The paper presents the success of EFM depends on how optimally the fuzzy membership parameters are selected and how fuzzy rules are generated.

  • A fault is considered as a variation of physical parameters; therefore the design of fault detection and identification(FDI) can be reduced to the parameter identification of a non linear system and to the association of the set of the estimated parameters with the mode of faults. ANFIS(Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System) which contains multiple linear models as consequent part is used to model non linear systems. In this paper, we proposes an FDI system for non linear systems using ANFIS. The proposed diagnositc system consists of two ANFISs which operate in two different modes (parallel-and series-parallel mode). It generates the parameter residuals associated with each modes of faults which can be further processed by additional RBF (Radial Basis function) network to identify the faults. The proposed FDI scheme has been tested by simultation on a two-tank system

  • Machine learning techniques have been applied in almost all the domains of human life to aid and enhance the problem solving capabilities of the system. The field of medical science has improved to a greater extent with the advent and application of these techniques. Efficient expert systems using various soft computing techniques like artificial neural network, Fuzzy Logic, Genetic algorithm, Hybrid system, etc. are being developed to equip medical practitioner with better and effective diagnosing capabilities. In this paper, a comparative study to evaluate the predictive performance of subtractive clustering based ANFIS hybrid system (SCANFIS) with Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) based ANFIS system (FCMANFIS) for Alzheimer disease (AD) has been taken. To evaluate the performance of these two systems, three parameters i.e. root mean square error (RMSE), prediction accuracy and precision are implemented. Experimental results demonstrated that the FCMANFIS model produce better results when compared to SCANFIS model in predictive analysis of Alzheimer disease (AD).

  • This paper proposes a real-time implementation of an optimal operation of a double stage grid connected wind power system incorporating an active power filter (APF). The system is used to supply the nonlinear loads with harmonics and reactive power compensation. On the generator side, a new adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control is proposed to track the maximum wind power point regardless of wind speed fluctuations. Whereas on the grid side, a modified predictive current control (PCC) algorithm is used to control the APF, and allow to ensure both compensating harmonic currents and injecting the generated power into the grid. Also a type 2 fuzzy logic controller is used to control the DC-link capacitor in order to improve the dynamic response of the APF, and to ensure a well-smoothed DC-Link capacitor voltage. The gained benefits from these proposed control algorithms are the main contribution in this work. The proposed control scheme is implemented on a small-scale wind energy conversion system (WECS) controlled by a dSPACE 1104 card. Experimental results show that the proposed T2FLC maintains the DC-Link capacitor voltage within the limit for injecting the power into the grid. In addition, the PCC of the APF guarantees a flexible settlement of real power exchanges from the WECS to the grid with a high power factor operation.

  • In general, fuzzy control system are efficient for the systems which are complicated and nonlinear. But the fuzzy control flawed by the fact that it is much trial and errors in process of getting parameters of membership function which can express optimal status of system. This paper shows the methodology which is applied of ANFIS(Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System) for the coverage against these defects. It proved superiority of ANFIS by controlling inverted pendulum.

  • The Collapse Margin Ratio (CMR) is a notable index used for seismic assessment of the structures. As proposed by FEMA P695, a set of analyses including the Nonlinear Static Analysis (NSA), Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA), together with Fragility Analysis, which are typically time-taking and computationally unaffordable, need to be conducted, so that the CMR could be obtained. To address this issue and to achieve a quick and efficient method to estimate the CMR, the Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Response Surface Method (RSM), and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) will be introduced in the current research. Accordingly, using the NSA results, an attempt was made to find a fast and efficient approach to derive the CMR. To this end, 5016 IDA analyses based on FEMA P695 methodology on 114 various Reinforced Concrete (RC) frames with 1 to 12 stories have been carried out. In this respect, five parameters have been used as the independent and desired inputs of the systems. On the other hand, the CMR is regarded as the output of the systems. Accordingly, a double hidden layer neural network with Levenberg-Marquardt training and learning algorithm was taken into account. Moreover, in the RSM approach, the quadratic system incorporating 20 parameters was implemented. Correspondingly, the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) has been employed to discuss the results taken from the developed model. Additionally, the essential parameters and interactions are extracted, and input parameters are sorted according to their importance. Moreover, the ANFIS using Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy system was employed. Finally, all methods were compared, and the effective parameters and associated relationships were extracted. In contrast to the other approaches, the ANFIS provided the best efficiency and high accuracy with the minimum desired errors. Comparatively, it was obtained that the ANN method is more effective than the RSM and has a higher regression coefficient and lower statistical errors.

  • Up to now, a lot of houses, roads and other urban facilities have been damaged by natural disasters such as flash floods and landslides. It is reported that the size and frequency of disasters are growing greatly due to global warming. In order to mitigate such disaster, flood forecasting and alerting systems have been developed for the Han river, Geum river, Nak-dong river and Young-san river. These systems, however, do not help small municipal departments cope with the threat of flood. In this study, a real-time urban flood forecasting service (U-FFS) is developed for ubiquitous computing city which includes small river basins. A test bed is deployed at Tan-cheon in Gyeonggido to verify U-FFS. Wireless sensors such as rainfall gauge and water lever gauge are installed to develop hydrologic forecasting model and CCTV camera systems are also incorporated to capture high definition images of river basins. U-FFS is based on the ANFIS (Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System) that is data-driven model and is characterized by its accuracy and adaptability. It is found that U-FFS can forecast the water level of outlet of river basin and provide real-time data through internet during heavy rain. It is revealed that U-FFS can predict the water level of 30 minutes and 1 hour later very accurately. Unlike other hydrologic forecasting model, this newly developed U-FFS has advantages such as its applicability and feasibility. Furthermore, it is expected that U-FFS presented in this study can be applied to ubiquitous computing city (U-City) and/or other cities which have suffered from flood damage for a long time.
