  • Subjects on one side of the covariate population can be allocated to the inferior treatment when there is interaction between the covariate and treatment along with a response-adaptive (RA) design without covariate adjustment. An RA design allows a newly entered subject to have a better chance so that the subject is treated by a superior treatment based on cumulative information from previous subjects. A covariate-adjusted response-adaptive (CARA) is the same as RA design and additionally adjusts the allocation based on individual covariate information. A comparison has been made for the sequential estimation procedure with and without covariate adjustment to see how ignoring significantly interactive covariate affects the correct treatment allocation. Using logistic models, we present simulation results regarding the coverage probability of treatment effect, correct allocation, and stopping time.

  • In this paper, we focus upon the design and applications of adaptive fuzzy-neuro controllers. An intelligent control system is proposed by exploiting the merits of two paradigms, a fuzzy logic controller and a neural network, assuming that we can modify in real time the consequential parts of the rulebase with adaptive learning, and that initial fuzzy control rules are established in a temporarily stable region. We choose the structure of fuzzy hypercubes for the fuzzy controller, and utilize the Perceptron learning rule in order to update the fuzzy control rules on-line with the output error. And, the effectiveness and the robustness of this intelligent controller are shown with application of the proposed adaptive fuzzy-neuro controller to control of the cart-pole system.

  • Measured bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) data have been used to represent complex interaction between lights and surface materials for photorealistic rendering. However, their massive size makes it hard to adopt them in practical rendering applications. In this paper, we propose an adaptive method for B-spline volume representation of measured BRDF data. It basically performs approximate B-spline volume lofting, which decomposes the problem into three sub-problems of multiple B-spline curve fitting along u-, v-, and w-parametric directions. Especially, it makes the efficient use of knots in the multiple B-spline curve fitting and thereby accomplishes adaptive knot placement along each parametric direction of a resulting B-spline volume. The proposed method is quite useful to realize efficient data reduction while smoothing out the noises and keeping the overall features of BRDF data well. By applying the B-spline volume models of real materials for rendering, we show that the B-spline volume models are effective in preserving the features of material appearance and are suitable for representing BRDF data.

  • In this paper, dynamic modeling and adaptive control problems for a space robot system are discussed. The space robot consist of a robot manipulator mounted on a free-floating base where no attitude control is applied. Using an extended robot model, the entire space robot can be viewed as an under-actuated robot system. Based on nonlinear control theory, the extended space robot model can then be decomposed into two subsystems: one is input-output exactly linearizable, and the other is unlinearizable and represents an internal dynamics. With this decomposition, a normal form-augmentation approach and an augmented state-feedback control are proposed to facilitate the design of adaptive control for the space robot system against parameter uncertainty, unknown dynamics and unmodeled payload in space applications. We demonstrate that under certain conditions, the entire space robot can be represented as a full-actuated robot system to avoid the inclusion of internal dynamics. Based on the dynamic model, we propose an adaptive control scheme using Cartesian space representation and demonstrate its validity and design procedure by a simulation study.

  • Vector controlled induction motor have been widely used in high performance applications. How-ever the performance is sensitive to the variations of motor parameters especially the rotor time constant which varies with the temperature and the saturation of the magnetizing inductance. In this paper the authors propose new identifying method for time-varying parameters of an induction motor which is based on adaptive vector control with serial block algorithm. Vector con-trol system realized on synchronous frame and parameter identification system realized on sta-tionary frame are not easily affected by the vector control frame. Parameter mismatch in the control system results in heavy transient variation in speed and torque response. In order to compensate degradation of the responses at the middle and low speed region adaptive identifier is introduced. To verify the feasibility of this technique compute simu-lations carried out.

  • An angle error is a factor obstructing to track accurate position in tracking radars. And the noise incurring the angle error can be divided as follows; thermal noise and glint. In general, Extended Kalman filter used in tracking radars is designed with considering thermal noise only. The Extended Klaman filter uses a fixed measurement error covariance when updating an estimate state by using ahead state and measurement. But, a noise power varies according to the range. Therefore we purposes the adaptive Kalman filter which changes the measurement noise covariance according to the range. In this paper, we compare the performance of the Extended Kalman filter and the proposed adaptive Kalman filter by considering KSLV-I (Korean Satellite Launch Vehicles).

  • Wireless mobile multimedia communications have been greatly increased in the number of users, diversity of applications and interface technologies. Wireless mobile networks are being evolved and integrated into IP based core network, so it is necessary to provide sufficient QoS (Quality of Service) mechanism to provide enhanced user's satisfaction. In this paper, we propose a new adaptive QoS mechanism based on utility function borrowed from the field of microeconomics, call setup and handover signaling mechanism integrating QoS and mobility management. Through a simulation, we show that adaptive resource allocation based on user preferences can be realized in the wireless mobile network with some considerations.

  • Such as disaster rescue in deep water, undersea exploration and monitering for environmental pollution, many applications require the acoustic communication for high data rate over underwater acoustic channel. As underwater channel is very complex and is time-varying, conventional single carrier communication has good performance. In this paper, An adaptive OFDM system is analyzed for high data rate and reliability and rubust service over UWA channels. Through the adaptive system, we show threshold switching for an adaptive algorithm.

  • In this paper, we present a indirect adaptive control method using a wavelet neural network (WNN) for the control of chaotic nonlinear systems without precise mathematical models. The proposed indirect adaptive control method includes the off-line identification and on-line control procedure for chaotic nonlinear systems. In the off-line identification procedure, the WNN based identification model identifies the chaotic nonlinear system by using the serial-parallel identification structure and is trained by the gradient-descent method. And, in the on-line control procedure, a WNN controller is designed by using the off-line identification model and is trained by the error back-propagation algorithm. Finally, the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed control method is demonstrated with applications to the chaotic nonlinear systems.

  • Time-domain clutter generation model for airborne pulse doppler phase-array radar is presented. Time-domain surface clutter signal is generated assuming earth of a sphere and considering geometry of a clutter patch, and generation of sub-array clutter signal is presented. The generated sub-array clutter signal can be used by simulation input signal in various radar applications of DBF(Digital Beamforming), ABF(Adaptive Beamforming), Stap(Space-Time Adaptive Processing) and etc.
