South Korea is in a dangerous situation where a war between the two Koreas could be triggered at any time based on the MDL (Military Demarcation Line) between the two Koreas due to the inter-Korean standoff over the armistice. Also, unlike the borders of other countries, the border between the two Koreas is the front-line area where people can feel the threat of life that could be triggered by war. Soldiers who work in special areas such as the contact area are not easily accessible due to local conditions, and are less likely to go out, stay out, stay out, or visit, and the working environment is overloaded with vast forests and silence at night, and feel anxious, lonely and insecure because they don't know when any situation will occur near the enemy. Therefore, a great deal of help will be needed to pay attention to soldiers who give up their lives here and perform their national defense duties, and to finish their barracks life safely and faithfully, and support for psychological adaptation of service members in the border areas.

The present research examine the impacts of correctional counselling for prisoners on their adaptation and behaviors in the correctional facilities. Three kinds of counselling - characteristic, religious, and individual - were given to prisoners and the prisoner's behavioral changes were measured. Specifically, the participating prisoners' behavioral evaluations and punishment records were assessed before, right after, and two months after the counseling sessions. In addition, a control group in which the prisoner were not given any session of counselling was included for comparison. The main results found that the prisoners in the characteristic counselling showed significantly higher increasement of positive behaviors than those in the control group. Of more importance, the improvement were maintained two months after the ends of the counselling sessions. With its external validity, the practical implications and limitations of the present findings were discussed together.

This study analyzed the relationships between positive attitude, leisure attitude, and leisure satisfaction among university students participating in a leisure activity support education program using the metaverse. The results are as follows. First, positive attitude was found to have a significant impact on leisure attitude. Perspective diversification influenced the cognitive and emotional factors of leisure attitude, self-acceptance influenced the emotional factor, and social adaptation influenced both the cognitive and emotional factors. Second, leisure attitude was found to have a significant impact on leisure satisfaction. Cognitive and emotional attitudes influenced all factors of leisure satisfaction, while behavioral attitude primarily influenced the relaxation factor. Third, positive attitude was found to have a significant impact on psychological, social, relaxation, and physiological factors of leisure satisfaction. Perspective diversification and self-acceptance played important roles, while social adaptation influenced all factors of leisure satisfaction. These findings provide important implications for the curriculum design of leisure activity support education programs using the metaverse for university students, focusing on enhancing positive attitude. The metaverse environment offers experiences similar to real-life interactions, which can contribute to enhancing participants' positive attitude and improving their leisure satisfaction. Program design should include elements that enhance participants' self-acceptance and social adaptation abilities, as well as focus on improving self-regulation skills. Through this, university students can enrich their leisure experiences, ultimately contributing to improving their overall quality of life.
When individuals collaborated in virtual settings, communication is medicated through a variety of communication technologies, and is associated not only with communication effectiveness but also with socio-emotional interactions among group members. In this regards, scholars have examined how technology-mediated communication systems can be designed and used to facilitated communication interaction. However, the empirical results of the previous studies have revealed inconsistencies in the effects of communication media on users' behavioral or attitudinal responses, and on their viable effectiveness in organizations. Some studies claim that computer-mediated communication(CMC) is task-oriented but not suitable for emotional expression since it hinders close interpersonal interaction. On the other hand, some studies argue that individuals are able to develop interpersonal relationships more effectively in a CMC environment than in an FtF-environment. Due to the different perspectives, a theoretical gap exists, and it leads to the inconsistent research findings. The purpose of this paper is to combine the two different perspectives into single unified model, thereby providing a more realistic and comprehensive understanding about virtual collaboration. The present study here sought to answers the following questions with organizational communication perspective: What are the major components of virtual collaboration? What factors affect the performance of virtual collaboration? And what kind of managerial efforts should organization make in order to facilitate CMC media effectiveness in virtual collaboration? Although there is a certain belief that new media, namely technology-mediated communication support would create new opportunities, the problem of "how" or "why" has been an important question that is still not fully addressed. In this regards, we collectively reexamined previous literatures with major issues which are still controversial and integrated various theoretical activity within computer-mediated communication domain: task-oriented approach, socio-emotional approach, and evolutionary psychological approach. Our first contribution is to develop a framework for virtual collaboration by combining two different perspectives into a single unified model, providing a more realistic and comprehensive understanding. The second main contribution is the joint modeling of both social presence and cognitive effort, and the effects on two distinct but important communication outcomes(i.e., take performance and relational development). We tested the research hypotheses which were developed based on the various CMC theories using data gathered through a self-administered mail survey of 127 individuals of 69 virtual workgroups. The proposed model was supported, providing preliminary evidence that the tension between two opposite view should be integrated. The results show that the individual's psychological processes(social presence and cognitive effort) in a virtual environment significantly mediated the effect of CMC inputs (media richness, user adaptation, and shared contest) on the CMC outputs (task performance and relational development). Furthermore, this study shows that the lack of perceived media richness of CMC media can be complemented by user adaptation and shared context. Based on the results, we discuss how communication system should be designed and implemented so as to promote virtual interaction as well as how a virtual workgroup should be composed to complement the lack of media richness. A virtual collaboration using CMC media may create new value by overcoming the logistical constraints. On the other hand, it may also generate various managerial risks such as communicational depersonalization, process dissatisfaction, and low cohesion. Therefore, this study suggests that organization managers should carefully choose the CMC mediums and monitor individual member's cognitive and affective psychological processes during virtual collaboration to reduce potential risks in virtual collaboration.
Background: This study investigated the utilization of both problem and emotion focused coping strategies and their association with aspects of quality of life among Turkish women with ovarian cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Materials and Methods: The convenience sample consisted of 228 patients in all disease stages. The data were collected using the brief COPE, QOL-Cancer patient tool, sociodemographic sheet, and medical variables were gathered from patients' medical charts. Results: Findings reveal that quality of life is moderately high for this group of cancer patients, despite some specific negative facets of the illness and treatment experience. Acceptance, emotional support and religion were the most frequently used problem-focused coping strategies and self-distraction, venting and behavioral disengagement were the most frequently used emotion-focused coping strategies reported by patients. Overall quality of life and, particularly, psychological and spiritual well-being scores of younger patients were lower. Patients reported using significantly more problem-focused coping than emotion-focused coping, and more problem-focused and less emotion-focused coping predicted greater quality of life. Problem-focused coping was related to patients' physical and spiritual well-being and emotion-focused coping was related inversely with psychological and social well-being. Conclusions: Coping strategies are influential in patient quality of life and their psychosocial adaptation to ovarian cancer. Psycho-oncology support programs are needed to help patients to frequent use of problem-focused coping and reduce emotion-focused coping strategies to improve overall quality of life.
Purpose: This study was done to understand elderly women within a community who have used lots of drugs. Method: Data was collected through in-depth interviews with four elderly women from April 2001 to February 2002. Data was analyzed by Giorgi's phenomenological method(2000). Results: The components in common with drug usage of elderly women were as follows: 'Awareness of the limitation of physical strength and uncertainty of life', 'Dread of a crisis situation occurring', 'Attachment and dependency on drugs', 'Expectation of a comfortable life and death', 'Prevention of family burden', and 'Pursuit of psychological comfort'. The general structure of experiences was as follows: causal factors were 'Awareness of uncertainty and limitation', 'dread of a crisis situation occurring' the results factor was 'Attachment and dependency on drugs' and the facilitating factors were 'Expectation of a comfortable life and death', 'Prevention of family burden', and 'Pursuit of psychological comfort'. The causal relation was cyclic. This structure showed a realistic adaptation pattern. Conclusion: This study contributed to provide fundamental data for nursing interventions for health promotion and promoting quality of life in elderly women by increasing understanding of the experiences of drugs use.
A growing body of evidence shows that most psychological traits are polygenic, that is they involve the action of many genes with small effects. However, the study of selection has disproportionately been on one or a few genes and their associated sweep signals (rapid and large changes in frequency). If our goal is to study the evolution of psychological variables, such as intelligence, we need a model that explains the evolution of phenotypes governed by many common genetic variants. This study illustrates simple statistical tools to detect signals of recent polygenic selection: a) ANOVA can be used to reveal significant deviation from random distribution of allele frequencies across racial groups. b) Principal component analysis can be used as a tool for finding a factor that represents the strength of recent selection on a phenotype and the underlying genetic variation. c) Method of correlated vectors: the correlation between genetic frequencies and the average phenotypes of different populations is computed; then, the resulting correlation coefficients are correlated with the corresponding alleles' genome-wide significance. This provides a measure of how selection acted on genes with higher signal to noise ratio. Another related test is that alleles with large frequency differences between populations should have a higher genome-wide significance value than alleles with small frequency differences. This paper fruitfully employs these tools and shows that common genetic variants exhibit subtle frequency shifts and that these shifts predict phenotypic differences across populations.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of job stress on organizational commitment among nurse working in small sized general hospitals and determine moderating effects of job satisfaction. Methods : A self-report questionnaire survey was completed by 292 nurses working at five small sized hospitals in P and K. Data were collected during March 2015 and analyzed with the SPSS 21.0 program. Results : Job satisfaction was a positive factor in organizational commitment. Job satisfaction had significant moderating effects on the relationship between job stress and organizational commitment of nurses working in small sized general hospitals. Conclusions : The results of this study indicate that various job stresses and job satisfaction have a significant effect on the organizational commitment of nurses working in small sized general hospitals. Therefore, to decrease the job stress and increase the job satisfaction of nurses working in small sized general hospitals, consideration must be given to improving the financial and psychological rewards as well as providing differentiated job training. To reduce the psychological burden of nurses, it is necessary to develop adaptation programs of nurses.
Purpose: The purposes of this study were to find the levels of distress and quality of life of breast cancer survivors in Korea and to identify relationship between distress and quality of life. Methods: The data were collected from 122 breast cancer survivors in 2009. To measure the distress and quality of life, the 'Distress Thermometer and Problem List' and the 'Functional Assessment Cancer Therapy-Breast' were used respectively. Results: The mean score of distress was 4.77 (${\pm}2.35$) and 63.1% of the subjects reported a distress score of 4 or more, indicating a clinically significant level of distress. Among these, the most frequently reported problem area was emotion, followed by family. The mean score of the quality of life was 88.22 (${\pm}18.41$), signifying 6.13 out of 10. The levels of distress and the quality of life were negatively correlated (r=-.38, p<.001). Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that distress is prevalent in Korean breast cancer survivors and the distress is related negatively with their quality of life. Thus oncology professionals continuously need to assess distress of breast cancer survivors and to provide appropriate psychosocial interventions to improve their quality of life.
Purpose: This study was designed to examine the relationships among daily hassles, social support, entrapment and mental health status in relation to gender in university students. Methods: Data were collected via a self- administered questionnaire from 118 male and 98 female college students in Kangwon province. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 18.0 program for descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: There were significant differences in daily hassles, entrapment and depression between male and female group. Also, there were significant relationship between entrapment and mental health status (i.e. depression, anxiety, hostility, somatization) in both groups. In male students, internal entrapment was the significant predictor of depression and anxiety, and external entrapment was the significant predictor of hostility and somatization whereas, in female students external entrapment was the significant predictor of depression, and internal entrapment was the significant predictor of anxiety, hostility and somatization. Conclusion: These results suggest that entrapment is an important factor for psychological maladaptation due to stressful life events. Therefore, strategies that reduce perception of entrapment according to gender should be developed for psychological adaptation.
