Cognitive Radio (CR) ad hoc network is highly considered as one of promising future ad hoc networks, which enables opportunistic access to under-utilized licensed spectrum. Similarly to other CR networks, the spectrum sensing is a prerequisite in CR ad hoc network. Collaborative spectrum sensing can help increasing sensing performance. For such an infrastructureless network, however the coordination for the sensing collaboration is really complicated due to the lack of a central controller. In this paper, we propose a novel collaborative spectrum sensing scheme in which the final decision is made by the node with the highest data reliability based on a sequential Dempster Shafer theory. The collaboration of sensing data is also executed by the proposed contention-aware reporting mechanism which utilizes the sensing data reliability order for broadcasting spectrum sensing result. The proposed method reduces the collecting time and the overhead of the control channel due to the efficiency of the ordered sequential combination while keeping the same sensing performance in comparison with the conventional cooperative centralized spectrum sensing scheme.

Secondary users should sense the licensed spectrum bands in order to protect the primary users from interference. However, periodic and frequent sensing for immediate detection of primary users usually gives rise to much sensing overhead, and thus will quickly drain the battery as well as deteriorate the performance of a secondary user. To overcome such problems, we focus on the method reducing sensing overhead of each secondary user and propose a distributed fair sensing scheme that the multiple users within a certain area, so-called sensing zone, sense the spectrum bands in a fairly distributed manner and share the results among the users within respective sensing zone. The design of the frame structure for the proposal is also demonstrated while considering the sensing requirements for protecting primary users. The performance results by numerical analyses and computer simulations show that our proposed sensing scheme significantly reduces the sensing overhead of each user compared to the conventional sensing scheme and also satisfies the given sensing requirements for primary user protection.

Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANET) becomes more popular in industry, academia and government. However, Typical VANET is challenged by high speed mobility and insufficient spectrum resources over congested scenarios. To address those serious problems, some articles have introduced Cognitive Radio (CR) technology into VANET and formed CR-VANET. In this article, we propose an overview of CR-VANET by exploring different architectures and features. Moreover, we provide taxonomy of state-of-the-art papers in this emerging field and the key articles are well analyzed respectively. In addition, we illustrate both research and application frameworks of CR-VANET based on our works, and propose some open research issues for inspiring future work.

The ship ad-hoc network (SANET) extends the coverage of the high data-rate terrestrial communications to the ships with the reduced cost in maritime communications. Cognitive radio (CR) has the ability of sensing the radio environment and dynamically reconfiguring the operating parameters, which can make SANET utilize the spectrum efficiently. However, due to the dynamic topology nature and no central entity for data fusion in SANET, the interference brought into the primary network caused by the hidden primary user requires to be carefully managed by a sort of decentralized cooperative spectrum sensing schemes. In this paper, we propose a self-weighted decentralized cooperative spectrum sensing (SWDCSS) scheme to solve such a problem. The analytical and simulation results show that the proposed SWDCSS scheme is reliable to detect the primary user in SANET. As a result, secondary network can efficiently utilize the spectrum band of primary network with little interference to primary network. Referring the complementary receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, we observe that with a given false alarm probability, our proposed algorithm reduces the missing probability by 27% than the traditional embedded spectrally agile radio protocol for evacuation (ESCAPE) algorithm in the best condition.

Frequency resource value is growing more and more with the development of the wireless communication. With the advent of the current information society comes a serious shortage of frequency resource, as the amount of supply is far from meeting its demands. Thus, cognitive radio (CR) technique is receiving more attention as a way to make use of the temporarily unoccupied frequency resource. In this paper we propose a novel out-of-band spectrum sensing and dynamic channel access scheme for frequency hopping-based cognitive radio ad-hoc networks. At the beginning of each current channel hopping time, member nodes perform spectrum sensing for the next hopping channel. Based on the proposed collision free primary detection notification, member nodes can determine whether they should execute a hopping time extension procedure of the current channel or not. When the primary detected hopping channel is re-idled, the hopping pattern recovery procedure is performed. In this paper we evaluated the performance of the proposed dynamic sensing and hopping channel extension mechanism for the various wireless network conditions. As a result, we show that the proposed method can increase channel utilization and provide reliable channel management operation.

In this paper, Threshold setting method is proposed to improve detection probability for cooperative sensing. Even if cooperative users have all same false alarm rate, each user has different threshold due to pass ad-hoc channel. threshold level is related to detection probability. So, we select the highest threshold among cooperative users and then share threshold information for getting the high detection probability.

In cognitive radio technology, the overall efficiency of communications systems can be improved without allocating additional bands by allowing a secondary system to utilize the licensed band when the primary system, which has the right to use the band, does not use it. In this paper, we propose a fast and reliable common channel initialization protocol without any exchange of initialization messages between the cluster head and the member nodes in cognitive ad-hoc networks. In the proposed method, the cluster and member nodes perform channel-based spectrum sensing. After sensing, the cluster head transmits a system activation signal through its available channels with a predetermined angle difference pattern. To detect the cluster head's transmission channels and to join the cluster, each member node implements fast Fourier transform (FFT) and computes autocorrelation for the angle difference sequence of the received signal patterns. This is compared to the predetermined reference angle difference pattern. The join-request and channel-decision procedures are presented in this paper. Performance evaluation of the proposed method is presented in the simulation results.

opportunistic spectrum access (OSA) allows unlicensed users to share licensed spectrum in space and time with no or little interference to primary users, with bring new research challenges in MAC design. We propose a cognitive MAC protocol using statistical channel information and selecting appropriate idle channel for transmission. The protocol based on the CSMA/CA, exploits statistics of spectrum usage for decision making on channel access. Idle channel availability, spectrum hole sufficiency and available channel condition will be included in algorithm statistical information. The model include the control channel and data channel, the transmitter negotiates with receiver on transmission parameters through control channel, statistical decision results (successful rate of transmission) from exchanged transmission parameters of control channel should pass the threshold and decide the data transmission with spectrum hole on data channel. A dynamical sensing range as a important parameter introduced to maintain the our protocol performance. The proposed protocol's simulation will show that proposed protocol does improve the throughput performance via traditional opportunistic spectrum access MAC protocol.
To provide an efficient link maintenance approach, we propose a cross layer medium access control (LM-MAC) protocol for multichannel cognitive radio ad hoc networks. Link establishment and reliable transmission are two key problems for a perfect link maintenance mechanism. Since the cognitive user (CU) pairs have to reestablish their links each frame, in the proposed MAC protocol, three different access modes are designed to guarantee transmission efficiency in continuous frames. To enhance the transmission reliability, each CU will create a father spectrum list (FSL) after joining in the network. FSL is divided into three groups of sub-channels with different functions to compensate the packet loss caused by the primary users' appearance and the deep fading. Meanwhile, since the transmitter and the receiver will share the same FSL, periodical cooperative sensing is adopted to further optimize the former problem. Finally, compared with the existing opportunistic multichannel (OMC)-MAC protocol, the proposed LM-MAC protocol achieves better system performance in terms of saturation throughput, continuity and access delay.
The scheme for recognizing the channel availability is one of the most important research issues in cognitive radio systems utilizing unused frequency bands. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme of selecting sensing channel in order to improve the sensing ability of frequency status in cognitive radio ad hoc networks. To fully exploit the sensing ability of each cognitive radio user, we adopt a master for a cluster which is made of several cognitive radio users. By gathering and analyzing the sensing information from cognitive radio users in the cluster, the cooperative sensing is realized. Since the transmission range of a licensed user is limited, it is possible that a master determines different sensing channels to each cognitive radio users based on their location. By making cognitive radio users sense different channels, the proposed scheme can recognize the state of wireless spectrum fast and precisely. Using the simulation, we compare the performance of the proposed scheme with those of two different compared schemes that one makes cognitive radio users recognize the frequency status based on their own sensing results and the other shares frequency status information but does not utilize the location information of licensed user. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme provides available channels as many as possible while detecting the activation of licensed user immediately.
