Objective : Acupuncture (from the Latin acus, "needle," and pungere, "to prick") is a technique of inserting and manipulating fine needles at specific points on the body. As a placebo acupuncture needle device was developed based on the visual impact of needling, it has been raised that it is useful only when acupuncture points and needling are visible to subjects. To examine the visual factor of the placebo acupuncture, the present study was aimed to compare the blinding index of the verum and placebo acupuncture between masked and unmasked situation. Methods : Thirty-six patients were randomly alloted to be stimulated with a verum or placebo acupuncture in a cross-over design. They were asked to guess a right answer whether they were stimulated with the verum or placebo acupuncture at LI4 in an unmasked or masked situation. The penetrating, pain, and deqi sensations were also measured after the stimulation using modified visual analogue scale. Results : The correct answer rate of the placebo acupuncture was 22.2% and 16.7% in an unmasked and masked situation, respectively (P>0.767). The blinding index of the placebo acupuncture was -0.56 (95%CI -0.84 to -0.27) and -0.67 (95%CI -0.91 to -0.42) in an unmasked and masked situation, respectively. The penetrating and deqi sensation of the verum acupuncture were significantly higher than those of the placebo acupuncture in both unmasked and masked situation. The pain sensation of the verum acupuncture was significantly higher than that of the placebo acupuncture in masked situation, but not in unmasked situation. Conclusion : Blinding of the placebo acupuncture was successful both in the unmasked and masked situation. These finding indicate that visual factor might not play a critical role in blinding of the placebo needle. We suggest that placebo needle would be also useful in a functional magnetic resonance imaging scan even when the subject could not see the placebo needle.

Analgesic effect varies according to the Acupuncture points and Acupuncture prescriptions. In dogs, these variations of analgesia by Electroacupuncture are not examined, and problems arise in appling the Acupuncture Clinically and experimentally. In the p
Objective : The objective of this paper is to study the characteristics of the categorization of acupuncure points of the Lung Meridian(肺經) based on Hwangdineijingmingtang(黃帝內經明堂). Method : This paper examines several texts regarding the Lung Meridian. Result and Conclusion : Out of Yang Shangshan(楊上善)'s work, the theoretical aspects are presented in Hwangdineijingmingtang, whereas contents regarding acupuncture points are presented in Hwangdineijingmingtang. This is due to Yang's position as an imperial doctor(太醫侍御). In Hwangdineijingmingtang, Yang explains the characteristics of Metal(金) based on Hwangdineijingmingtang followed by an explanation of the acupuncture points of the Lung Meridian, which shows his emphasis on the relationship between the meridian as the main branch and the viscera. Along this medical logic, Yang must have included LU1(中府) into the Lung Meridian. This is Yang's unique point of view, distinguishing itself from other texts regarding the Lung Meridian. Apart from the means of explanation of the Lung Meridian by Yang, the verse 'made a volume for each 12 meridian' in the introduction of Hwangdineijingmingtang, discussion of the main treatable diseases of Hwangdineijingmingtang, contents on pathways of Lingshu Jingmai(靈樞 經脈), the start and end points of the meridians in Lingshu Maidu(靈樞 脈度) points to the assumption that each acupuncture point's belonging meridian known to us today was fixated by Yang.
Acupuncture has been clinically used to treat patients suffering from eye disease. It has been used in efforts to help preserve vision for those with a wide range of eye conditions including glaucoma and intraocular hypertension. High intraocular pressure (IOP) is usually associated with glaucoma and conventional treatment is focused on lowering IOP. Controlling this risk factor should help hasten the onset of glaucoma for those patents that are suspect or borderline candidates for glaucoma. In review of the limited scientific research there are not many studies that support conclusive evidence for the use of acupuncture on eye diseases and particularly glaucoma and ocular hypertension. For the information that does exist, diverse results from various interventions make it difficult to draw clear conclusions. The existing studies use different acupoints, techniques, frequencies, and durations. Individual treatment strategies according to the practitioner's subjective experience, patient condition, and the use of other complimentary and natural strategies is ideal for taking a more dynamic and wholistic approach to getting results. Until more pragmatic research models are funded and implemented, case reports can offer good examples of experiential and objective outcomes. This case report presents a 61 year old healthy female patient diagnosed with open-angle borderline glaucoma with elevated IOP. The patients IOP was successfully reduced with 12 treatments over three months using scalp electro-acupuncture and distal Master Tung points.

Objectives : In our previous study, we developed the prototype of a lesson plan for meridian and acupuncture clinical skills education by applying the rapid prototyping to instructional systems design. The present study aimed to develop a teaching-learning manual, including the lesson plans, practice notes, and instructions for devices. We also aimed to present a guideline on how to use the manual in class. Methods : The manual and materials for teachers and learners were developed based on the solutions and the prototype derived from our previous study. Practical classes on meridian and acupuncture points consist of four major subjects, and the lesson plan and practice note were designed according to each topic. Results : Flipped learning, George's five-step method, peer role-play, and peer-led objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) were applied as main methodologies in the meridian and acupuncture points practical class. The teaching-learning manual, including practice notes, detailed lesson plan, OSCE checklist, and instruction manual for devices, was developed to be utilized at each stage of the learning activity. Conclusions : The application of the teaching-learning manual is expected to provide effective clinical skills education, strengthen learners' communication skills, establish professional identity, assess learners' performance, and provide immediate feedback. The educational effect of the manual for the existing class should be identified, and its feasibility should be verified by implementing it on another group. This manual could be helpful in designing classes for other subjects of Korean medicine, especially for clinical skills education.
Objectives : The acupoint-meridian relationship of an acupoint is one of important features of the acupoint. It has also shown evolutionary development over the history of medicine. This study analyzed the prototype kind of information on acupoint-meridian relationships in the A-B Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion(the Classic) of 2c BCE. Methods : The acupoint-meridian relationship of all the acupoints listed in the Classic was counted and reviewed in comparison with the information in the contemporary standard texts. Results : In comparison with the contemporary standard of 361 meridian points, the Classic listed 349(97%) acupoints. Of contemporary standard 361 points, 287(81%) acupoints still maintain the same acupoint-meridian relationship as in the Classic. Conclusions : Acupoint-meridian relationship in the Classic has largely been maintained throughout the history and still comprises a major proportion of the contemporary body of knowledge on acupoint-meridian relationship.
Burning acupuncture is one of the methods of curing and preventing many kinds of diseases by inserting and taking out of the needle into particular points of the body so called acupuncture points, using a heated Dae-Chim which is one of the nine kinds of needles used in ancient times or by inserting a thick needle after its been heated to certain temperature. Nowadays in China, Burning Acupuncture is used thoroughly from musculoskeletal diseases to, internal medicine, gynecology and many other clinical departments. But in Korea, this method of cure is practiced by only a few clinicians, therefore by studying historical documents, our object is to recognize the importance of the Burning acupuncture and to offer the basis for the scientific researches and clinical application.
Background : This study focuses on the new acupuncture method of embedding method which inserts a substance on the acupuncture points for continuous stimulation. Clinical applications and cautions were examined through literary investigations. Results : Based on the literary consideration of embedding method, the following results were obtained : 1. Embedding method is a combination of traditional and embedding technique to provide longer duration of stimulation on the acupuncture points. 2. To administer the embedding method, one needs to utilize a embedding thread besides acupuncture apparatus. Sheep gut is commonly used in China and the surgical thread is the choice in Korea. 3. Embedding method may vary from the patient to patient, depending on the nature and location of the illness. Piercing, embedding, and tying are some of the possibilities. 4. Embedding method may have different arrangement of threads based on the choice of usage. 5. Embedding method is effective for various chronic illnesses such as aches, functional diseases, and the diseases of internal organs. 6. When using the embedding methods, cautions against infection and side effects due to strong stimulation are mandatory.
Objective : Experimental studies were done to research the clinical effects of Herba Patriniae(HP) aqua-acupuncture ($BL_{13},\;BL_{17},\;BL_{13}{\cdot}BL_{17}$ and free points) on the anti-allergic inflammatory response. Methods : We measured active systemic anaphylatic shock induced by compound 48/80 and microvascular permeability increased by acetic acid. And we measured total IgE and plasma WBC level, serum total protein, albumin, immunoglobulin and NO levels induced by egg albumin. Results : HP aqua-acupuncture pretreatments at all acupoints inhibited active systemic anaphylatic shock induced by compound 48/80 and microvascular permeability increased by acetic acid. Total IgE and plasma WBC level inhibited by HP aqua-acupuncture pretreatment at $BL_{13}\;BL_{17}$ and free points. However, HP aqua-acupuncture didn't effect serum total protein, albumin, immunoglobulin and NO levels. Conclusion : These results suggest that HP aqua-acupuncture may be beneficial in the regulation of type Ⅰ allergic reaction, but is further required immunological studies on the allergic reaction.
Objectives : The aim of the study is to explain the general guidelines of the WHO standard acupuncture point locations (APLs). Understanding the general guidelines will enable experts to make the clear use of the standard APL for education, research and practice. Methods : In the beginning of development of the standard APL, experts made general guidelines to draw mutual agreements of the three nations (Korea, China, and Japan) on the standard APL. The guidelines include point locating methods, syntax of descriptive sentences, landmarks on body surface, reference acupuncture points, usage of anatomical terminology, and proportional bone measurements. Results : We found that there are some considerable problems in practical use of the APLs due to the strict application of anatomical terms, even on accessory phrases such as region of body in the sentence of each description. Conclusions : We hope that the study helps readers expand the understanding of the newly developed standard APLs resulting from increased application of acupuncture points. Also, it would be a reference to revise the WHO standard APLs in the future.
