  • This paper is the second of 2 companion papers which investigate in-cylinder swirl generation characteristics in helical port engine with wide valve angle. Two wide valve-angle engines, which are same ones and have slightly different rig swirl number, were used to compare the characteristics of cylinder-flow. One intake port is deactivated to induce swirl flow. A PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) was applied to measure in-cylinder velocity field during intake stroke. The results show that the intake flow component passing through valve area near the cylinder wall is not negligible in helical port engine with wide valve angle contrary to conventional one. The effect of this velocity component on in-cylinder increases as the swirl ratio rises and compression process progresses. Consequently, this component destroys in-cylinder swirl flow completely during compression resulting in no actual swirl at the end stage of compression.

  • This paper shows a general development process for aircraft gas turbine combustors. As a first step for developing the preliminary combustor design program, several combustor sizing methodologies using reference area concepts are reviewed. There are three ways to determine the reference area; 1) combustion efficiency approach, 2) pressure loss approach, 3) velocity assumption approach. The current study shows the comparisons of the calculated results of combustor reference values from the pressure loss and velocity assumption approaches. Further works are required to add iterative steps in the program using more reasonable values of pressure loss and velocities, and to evaluate the sizing results using data for actual combustor performance and sizes.

  • In this paper, we propose a simple control scheme, based on second order sliding modes, which guarantees a fast and precise container transfer and the swing suppression during the container movement, despite of model uncertainties and unmodeled dynamic actuators. In the actual case, the swing suppression is obtained by constraining the system motion on a suitable surface which involves both the desired path and the swing angle. Strictly speaking, the trolley velocity is modified on-line, on the actual swing angle, to obtain the suppression of the oscillations not only at the end of the transport but during transfer as well. Such controller has been tested on a laboratory-size model of the 3Dcrane, and some experimental results are reported.

  • The effects of the internal flow in a D.I. Diesel injection nozzle on the atomization of a spray were analyzed experimentally. Flow visualization studies were made using a transparent acrylic model nozzle as a diesel nozzle . Water instead of disel fuel was used as the injection liquid. The geometry of the model nozzle was scaled up 10 times of the actual nozzle and the injection pressure for the model nozzle was adjusted so as to achieve a Reynolds number at the discharge hole that was the same as the actual nozzle. Experimental results show that when the needle lift was small, the high turbulence in the sac chamber generated by the high velocity seat flow made the spread angle of the spray plume large. Cavitation, which arose from the sac chamber, makes the spread angle of the spray plume large but the discharge coefficient small.

  • In this study, the maintenance problems were investigated through checking the creeks which were improved by close-to-nature river improvement technique. The characteristics of flow were measured at Changsa Creek in Suwon city. The computational results of numerical model with kinematic wave theory was evaluated through observation data about precipitation, velocity, and flow depth. Furthermore, SCS, Clark, and RRL models were compared to the actual observations. As a result, the kinematic wave theory's calculated peak time of discharge concentration occurred little earlier than the actual observation, but the tendency of hydrograph coincided with observation.

  • The purpose of this study is not only to evaluate thermal performance but also to find the stress behavior of heat transfer tubes under the part load operation in Heat Recovery Steam Generator. Flow analysis was performed to know the behavior of exhaust gas from gas turbine and thermal performance was calculated using distribution of hot exhaust velocity. In addition, tubes temperature during operation were gathered from actual plant to verify the uneven flow distribution under part load operation. Stress analysis was performed using tubes temperature data gathered from actual plant under both part and full load operations to know the stress behavior of tubes.

  • We present a mathematical model that predicts the variation of illuminance during a solar eclipse, considering continuous effects of limb darkening. We assume that (1) the Sun and the Moon constitute perfect spheres, (2) the Moon crosses the Sun with a constant apparent velocity, and (3) sunspots, prominences, and coronae can be neglected. We compare predictions of this model with actual measurements made by M$\ddot{o}$llmann & Vollmer (2006) during a total solar eclipse in Turkey, and with predictions of existing models. The new model is shown to describe the actual phenomenon more accurately than existing models.

  • The process and results of computer simulation using bond graphs for a hydraulic system driving large rotational inertia are presented in this paper. As the large rotational inertia and its application characteristics, control criteria of this system is not position-control nor velocity-control but appropriate acceleration, deceleration and inching ability. All the components' nonlinear characteristics are modelled using bond graphs. The equationing and solution process is carried out by a package. Finally it is concluded that modelling of this kind of system by bond graphs and using a software as its solver shows good approximated results to actual experimental data, and that the proposed modelling may be useful to actual design process for this kind of hydraulic system.

  • Virtual images for PIV are produced for the construction of a benchmark test tool of PTV systems, Camera parameters obtained by an actual experiment are used to construct the virtual images, LES(Large Eddy Simulation) data sets of a channel flow are used for generation of the virtual images, Using the virtual images and the camera's parameters. three-dimensional velocity vectors are obtained for a channel flow. The capabilities of a 3D-PTV algorithm are investigated by comparing the results obtained by the virtual images and those by an actual measurement for the channel flow.
