This study was focused on the catalytic activity for the combustion of low-concentration methane using various commerical catalysts (six transition metal catalysts in Russia and one rare earth metal (Honeycomb) catalyst in Korea). Catalytic activity was strongly influenced by the type and loading content of metal supported in catalyst. Catalytic performance showed the highest activity in Honeycomb catalyst including rare earth metal, which was the most expensive catalyst, while the next was the catalyst supported Cu with high content (AOK-78-52) and also that supported Cr and Co (AOK-78-56). However, both AOK-78-52 and AOK-78-56 catalysts that were very cheap had lower activation energy than Honeycomb catalyst. In the economical field, both AOK-78-52 and AOK-78-56 catalysts with transition metals showed a good alternative catalyst on the combustion of methane.
Water-insoluble chitosan with molecular weight of 2,000,000, 500,000, 80,000, and 40,000 and more than 90% of degree of deacetylation were used to test antibacterial activity of chitosan against a pathogenic bacteria, methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA), which is being issued in the world. As experimental method, Agar plate Smear Method and Agar plate Contact Method were used. The moleculur weight of chitosan didn't exert significant influences on its antibacterial activity against MRSA but chitosan having molecular weight 40,000, 80,000 and 150,000 showed the excellent antibacterial activity. The antibacterial efHciency was excellent in applying it after chitosan was dissolved in acetic acid solution, while the antibacterial efficiency was not expressed nearly in case of applying after chitosan was dissolved in neutral water. Therefore, it is considered that chitosan can show the antibacterial efficiency only if a positive ion status of -NH₃/sup +/ is maintained. MIC of chitosan/acetic acid solution and cotton fabrics finished with chitosan/acetic acid solution showed in concentration of 0.05%.

Novel glucoconjugates phenolic moiety, 3-(methoxycarbonyl)-4-(hydroxyphenyl)-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside(4), 3-(methoxyacetyl)-4-(hydroxyphenyl)-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside(7), 4-(hydroxyphenyl)-$\beta$-D-ribofuranoside(11), were synthesized. In order to investigate their depigmentation effect, inhibitory activity against mushroom tyrosinase and inhibitory activity of melanin synthesis in B16 melanoma cell were evaluated in vitro. Compound 11 showed 92.0$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎖ of tyrosinase inhibitory activity whereas compound 4 and 7 showed very low activity not less than 300$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎖. Inhibitory activities of melanin synthesis in B16 melanoma cell of compound 4, 7, and 11 were 8.7, 15.1, and 36.0%, respectively, at the concentration of 100$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎖. Inhibitory activity of compound 11 was much higher than that of arbutin at the same concentration.
The potential antioxidant activities of different fractions from methanolic extract of Curcuma longa L. were assayed in vitro. All of the fractions exception of n-hexane and $H_2O$ showed a strong antioxidant activity, especially the ethylacetate (EtOAc) fraction, which showed the highest 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity ($IC_{50}=9.86\;{\mu}g/mL$). The results of 2,2'-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay showed concentration dependency, the EtOAc fraction demonstrating a better result than the other fractions at the same concentration in this studies. Additionally, when the total phenolic contents of fractions were measured, the EtOAc fraction contained the highest level. Meanwhile, correlation analysis indicated a high correlation between the antiradical activity and the total phenolic contents, suggesting that fractions obtained from the methanolic extract of Curcuma longa L. have wide potential for use as sources of antioxidant material.
Bactericidal activity of grapefruit seed extract (GSE)-based disinfectant, as a safe disinfectant, was measured against five bacteria by Korean Food & Drug Administration (KFDA) dilution-neutralization method. GSE-based disinfectant showed a 99.9999% bactericidal activity against Escherichia coli ATCC 10536, Salmonella typhi ATCC 29629, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Bacillus cereus ATCC 11778, and Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 1911 at the concentration of 2.15% GSE. It showed better bactericidal activity against Gram-negative bacteria of E. coli ATCC 10536 and S. typhi ATCC 29629 at lower concentration of GSE (0.43%). Based on the results, it was suggested that a possible bactericidal mechanism of GSE active ingredients was due to the abrupt osmotic shift during the bactericidal activity test by KFDA method.
The effect of Rhinacanthus nasutus leaf extract on the growth of dermatophytes had been investigated. In vitro the extract exhibited high activity against various species of dermatophytes (Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes, T. mentagrophytes var. interdigitale, T. rubrum, Microsporum canis and M. gypseum). The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of the extract revealed that all the dermatophytes tested had MIC values of 13.6 mg/ml. The extract exhibited fungistatic activity at lower concentrations $({\leq}13.6\;mg/ml\;or\;below\;the\;MIC\;value)$ and fungicidal activity at higher concentrations $({\geq}13.6\;mg/ml$\;or\;above\;the\;MIC\;value)$. The results suggested that the extract acted on the cell wall of the dermatophytes which subsequently leading to the formation of cytopathological and membrane structural degeneration and finally leading to cell lysis and death.
Effects of organophosphorus fungicides on cutinase activity from Glomerella cingulata causing apple anthracnose and infection of apple were investigated. Diisoprophylfluorophosphate (DFP) inhibited the enzyme activity indicating that catalysis involves an active serine. In inhibition of the enzyme activity by organophosphorus fungicides, I50 (molar concentration of fungicide at which the enzyme activity is inhibited 50%) of Hinosan and Kitazin P were 26.3 $\mu$M and 427.7 $\mu$M, respectively. At concentration of 10-3 M DFP and organophosphorus fungicides, the infection of G. cingulata was inhibited to 5% in comparison with 15% infection at the unwounded healthy control, but increased to 30% when added with 1 mg/ml of cutinase. Mycelial growth was 36 mm in colony diameter on the medium added with 10-4M of hinosan in comparison with 90 mm of the untreated control, but was 90 mm on the medium added with 10-4M of kitazin P showing lower inhibition than hinosan. The spore germination was more than 60% at all the concentrations of both fungicides.

Korean medicinal plants were screened for their inhibitory activity against HIV-1 protease. The inhibitory activity of protease was determined by incubating the extracts in reaction mixtures containing protease and substrate $His-Lys-Ala-Arg-Val-Leu-(p-NO_{2}-Phe)-Glu-Ala-Nle-Ser-NH_{2}$ to perform proteolytic cleavage reactions. In this study the twenty six extracts from medicinal plants were investigated. Of the extracts tested, the extracts from the stem of Morus alba. exhibited the strongest activity with inhibition of 81% at a concentration of $100{\mu}g/ml$. The extracts of the flower of Saxjfraga stolonifera, and stems of Euonymus japonica and Castanea crenata showed appreciable inhibitory activity (>50%) against HIV-1 protease at same concentration.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the dyeability, antibacterial activity on silk and rayon fabrics dyed with cochineal. The result are as follows; 1. The K/S value of silk fabric was higher than that of rayon fabric. 2. The optimum conditions are mordant concentration $0.5{\sim}1%$, dyeing material concentration 2.0%(o.w.f), dyeing temperature $60^{\circ}C$, PH 3 and dyeing time 30minutes. 3. Pre-mordanting method had higher dyeing absorption than post mordanting method in case of silk and rayon fabrics. 4. The antibacterial activity of dyed silk fabrics were higher than that of dyed rayon fabrics and the antibacterial activity was increased by mordanting. 5. The lightfastness and perspiration fastness of silk fabric were improved but these of rayon were not. Dyeing fastness was improved by Fe mordanting on both fabrics.
4-year-old fresh ginseng was stored for 12 weeks at 4$^{\circ}C$ under the CA storage and samples were withdrawn after every 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 12 weeks for processing of red ginseng. Antloxidative and cytotoxic activities of steamed red ginseng for the quality evaluation are summarized as follows: Reducible activity of water extract to 1, 1-dipenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl increased with increasing storage period. Antioxldative activity of red ginseng did not change in petroleum ether fraction, while it had a tendency to increase In the fractions of ethyl ether and ethyl acetate with increasing storage period. in contrast to fresh ginseng, malonaldehyde formation In heparin mlcrosome of red ginseng processed from fresh ginseng stored In CO2:O2:Nl (6:4:90) with a 0.5% DF-100 immersion condition decreased but was not changed significantly by the period of storage. Cytotoxic activity against cancer cell at a 40 mg/ml concentration of red ginseng slightly increased with an increase in storage period but no effect was observed at the concentration less than 10 mg/ml.
