  • Purpose: This study is to investigate the low back pain, social support, impediment in daily living activities and to identify factors affecting impediment in elderly farmer' daily living activities. Methods: The participants were 128 elderly farmers who had received nerve block. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire from February to March, 2018. They were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, pearson's correlation coefficient, and linear multiple regression. Results: The score of low back pain was $6.27{\pm}1.69$ (10 points), that of social support $2.92{\pm}0.76$ (1~5 points), and that of impediment in activity of daily living $2.01{\pm}0.82$ (0~5 points). Factors affecting impediment in activity of daily living were found to include age (p=.017), daily hours of farm work (p<.001), fear for the nerve block (p<.001), low back pain (p<.001), and social support (p<.001); the explanatory power of these variables was 58.8%. Conclusion: This study has found the controllable factors affecting impediment in activity of daily living among the rural elderly engaging in farm work include low back pain, social support, and daily farming hours. Therefore, to reduce impediment in activity of daily living among them, it is necessary to develop nursing interventions that can improve impediment in activity of daily living through reduction of daily farming hours using local resources. It is also desirable to improve their health status by reducing low back pain, and develop and apply social supports with health education programs that fit the local resources and the needs of the rural elderly.

  • Purpose : There is a lack of research on this field in the Republic of Korea, especially those that have seen the effect of interaction between transcranial direct current stimulation and computerized cognitive rehabilitation therapy. This study divided 30 dementia patients into a treatment group, which received transcranial direct current stimulation and computerized cognitive rehabilitation, and a control group, which received pseudo-transcranial direct current stimulation and pseudo-computerized cognitive rehabilitation. This study evaluated the effects of these treatments on the visual perception, cognition functions, and daily activities of dementia patients. Methods : Fifteen subjects were allocated to the treatment group and the other 15 subjects were allocated to the control group. Treatments were given at intervals of five sessions per week (30 minutes per session) for six weeks (30 times in total). This study used the Neurobehavioral Cognitive Status Examination (NCSE) to examine cognitive functions, MVPT to evaluate visual perception, and FIM to test daily living activities before and after applying the treatments. Results : The results of this study showed that cognitive functions, visual perception, and daily living activities significantly (p<.05) improved after the intervention in the treatment group and the control group. The changes in cognitive functions, visual perception, and daily living activities due to the treatments were significantly different between the groups (p<.05). Conclusion : The results indicated that transcranial direct current stimulation and computerized cognitive rehabilitation therapy improved visual perception and daily living activities by increasing cognitive functions. Consequently, it was found that the simultaneous application of transcranial direct current stimulation in conjunction with a computerized cognitive rehabilitation program was an intervention method that could positively affect the visual perception, cognitive function, and daily living activities of dementia patients. Based on the results of this study, the study of arbitration protocols for demential will have to be more active.

  • This study investigated the relationship among pain, depression and activities of daily living in nursing home residents. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire survey of residents at 4 nursing homes in S city. The measures were the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) and Discomfort Scale-Dementia of the Alzheimer Type (DS-DAT) for self-reported and observational pain, Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form-Korea Version (GDSSF-K) for depression, Barthel Activities of Daily Living (BADL) scale for ADL. The data were analyzed using the Pearson's correlation coefficient and hierarchical multiple regression using the SPSS/PC 20.0 program. The analysis results of the relationship of pain, depression and activities of daily living, both DS-DAT and NRS showed a significant negative correlation with the activities of daily living and a positive correlation with depression. Finally, gender, arthritis, depression, and activities of daily living explained 28.1% of the variance in pain using NRS, whereas depression and activities of daily living explained 21.5% of the variance in pain using DS-DAT. The results highlight the need to develop a pain management program that reduces the depression and promotes the activities of daily living in nursing home residents; hence, a differentiated approach as non-pharmacological interventions is required.

  • Objective : This study aimed to examine the association Self-Rated Health(hereafter SRH) and Activities of Daily Living(hereafter ADL), Independent Activities of Daily Living(hereafter IADL) among Korean elderly. Methods : Using nationally representative cross sectional studies called 2014 Survey of living conditions and welfare needs of Korean elder persons. We used SRH as an independent variable, disabilities of ADL and IADL as dependent variables. Logistic regression was implemented and potential confounders such as socio-economic status, demographic characteristics and others were adjusted. Results : It was revealed that people who were female(than male) and 75 or more years old(than less than 75 years old) were shown to have poor SRH and disabilities of both ADL and IADL. In logistic regression model, poor SRH was associated with ADL and IADL disabilities. Especially, their association was more remarkable among male than among female. It can be understood that socio-economic contexts affect quality of life among elderly and SRH can be differently perceived by gender. Conclusions : Our notable findings showed that gender perspective is needed to understand SRH and daily living among elderly.

  • This study aims to investigate the relationship between quality of life, activities of daily living, and depression among Korean super-aged women. In this study, the 7th (2018) data of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) were used. The participants in this study were 363 super-aged women. The mean age was 88.67 years old. Quality of life was significantly related with Activities of daily living (ADL) (r = .34, p < .001), and depression (r = -.47, p < .001). The analysis of the hypothesized model showed a good fit to the data except for the χ2 value (χ2 = 38.8, df = 11, p < .001, CFI = .98, TLI = .96, RMSEA = 0.08). The hypothesized model explained 34% of the variance in super-aged women. The activities of daily living of elderly women had an indirect effect on quality of life via depression. Very old women with a high level of ADL were more likely to be feeling less depression, and elderly people who had less depression were likely to have a better quality of life. The findings thus highlight prevailing depression and activities of daily living as critical foci for clinical management strategies in super-aged women.
