Transport phenomena of reactant and product are directly linked to intrinsic inhomogeneous random configurations of catalyst layer (CL) that consist of ionomer, carbon-supported catalyst (Pt/C), and pores. Hence, electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) of Pt/C is dominated by geometrical morphology of mass transport path. Undoubtedly these ECSAs are key factor of total fuel cell efficiency. In this study, non-deterministic micro-scale CLs were randomly generated by Monte Carlo method and implemented with the percolation process. To ensure valid inference about Pt/C catalyst utilization, 600 samples were chosen as the number of necessary samples with 95% confidence level. Statistic results of 600 samples generated under particular condition (20vol% Pt/C, 30vol% ionomer, 50vol% pore, and 20nm particle diameter) reveal only 18.2%~81.0% of Pt/C can construct ECSAs with mean value of 53.8%. This study indicates that the catalyst utilization in fuel cell CLs cannot be identical notwithstanding the same design condition.
The data of the agricultural water quality survey network was analyzed between from 1990 to 2010 in order to propose effective plans for water quality management by analyzing the characteristics of agricultural lakes and the change of water quality. The result of the analysis shows that there is a correlation between water quality and items that can be a function of water depth such as dam height, dam length, dam height/dam length ratio and active storage/surface area of lake ratio. This means that, Korean agricultural lakes, there is a correlation between water quality and water depth. Water quality of the lakes that have lower than 5m of active storage/surface area of lake ratio (effective water depth) especially tends to get worse rapidly. The Chl-a and COD concentration of Korean agricultural lakes have a tendency to increase between June and September. Therefore, we recommend first taking a water quality improvement project for the lakes preformed watershed management project, and taking a preventive short-term water quality improvement project for the unperformed lakes before June among lakes that have lower than 5m of effective water depth.
In order to effective degradation of organic dye both under visible light or ultrasonic irradiation, the MWCNTs (multiwalled carbon nanotube) deposited with Fe and $TiO_2$ were prepared by a modified sol-gel method. The Fe/$TiO_2$-MWCNT catalyst was characterized by surface area of BET, scanning electron microscope (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. The low intensity visible light and low power ultrasound was as an irradiation source and the methylene blue (MB) was choose as the model organic dye. Then degradation experiments were carried out in present of undoped $TiO_2$, Fe/$TiO_2$ and Fe/$TiO_2$-MWCNT catalysts. Through the degradation of MB solution, the results showed the feasible and potential use of Fe/$TiO_2$-MWCNT catalyst under visible light and ultrasonic irradiation due to the enhanced formation of reactive radicals as well as the possible visible light and the increase of ultrasound-induced active surface area of the catalyst. After addition of $H_2O_2$, the MB degradation rates have been accelerated, especially with Fe/$TiO_2$-MWCNT catalyst, in case of that the photo-Fenton reaction occurred. The sonophotocatalysis was always faster than the respective individual processes due to the more formation of reactive radicals as well as the increase of the active surface area of Fe/$TiO_2$-MWCNT catalyst.
We have reported to make nanostructured cobalt oxide electrode that have large capacitance over than 400 F/g (specific capacitance) and good cycleability. But, it had serious demerits of low voltage range under 0.5 V and low power density. Therefore, we need to increase voltage range of cobalt oxide electrode. We report here on the electrochemical properties of sol-gel-derived nanoparticulate cobalt xerogel in 1M KOH solution and aqueous polymeric gel electrolyte. In solution electrolyte, cobalt oxide electrode had over 250 F/g capacitance consisted of EDLC and pseudocapacitance. In gel electrolyte, cobalt oxide electrode had around 100 F/g capacitance. This capacitance was only electric double layer capacitance of active surface area. In solution electrolyte, potassium ion as working ion reacted with both of layers easily. However, In gel electrolyte, reacted with only surface-active layer. Itis very hard to reach resistive layer. So, we have studied on pretreatment of electrode to contain working ions easily. We'll report more details.
The temperature-programmed reduction of titanium oxide ($TiO_2$) with pure $CH_4$ was used for the preparation of titanium carbide crystallites. The synthesized materials had the different surface areas, indicating that the structural properties of these materials were strong functions of two different heating rates and space velocity employed. The titanium carbide crystallites were active for $NH_3$ decomposition. Since the reactivity varied with changes in the particle size, ammonia decomposition reactivity over the titanium carbides crystallites appeared to be related to the different active species. The reactivities of titanium carbide crystallites were two and three times lower than those of the vanadium and molybdenum carbide crystallites, respectively. These results suggested that the difference in activities might be related to the degree of electron transfer between metals and carbon.
Tantalum carbide crystallites which is to be used for $H_2$ fuel cell has been synthesized via a temperature-programmed reduction of $Ta_2O_5$ with pure $CH_4$. The resultant Ta carbide crystallites prepared using two different heating rates and space velocity exhibit the different surface areas. The $O_2$ uptake has a linear relation with surface area, corresponding to an oxygen capacity of $1.36{\times}10^{13}\;O\;cm^{-2}$. Tantalum carbide crystallites are very active for hydrogen production form ammonia decomposition reaction. Tantalum carbides are as much as two orders of magnitude more active than Pt/C catalyst (Engelhard). The highest activity has been observed at a ratio of $C_1/Ta^{{\delta}+}=0.85$, suggesting the presence of electron transfer between metals and carbon in metal carbides.
Quality evaluation of laser welded MCFC separator panels with large active area was performed. Lap joint was applied to produce stable air-tight seam weld by employing Nd:YAG laser. Results showed that surface contamination played a key role to form weld defects at the joint interface. However, there was no evidence that weld width at the lap joint changed after the stack operation time of 2,890h. Test results also revealed that the reinforcement values which were measured on the weld line after long time operation, were stable.
Stainless steel wire has been used in industry, dental and medical parts. Especially, it has been used widely for the dental orthodontic materials. The orthodontic wire requires good mechanical properties, such as elastic strength, combined with a high resistance to corrosion. To increase elastic strength and good corrosion resistance, drawing methods(one-step and two-step drawing) have been used and the electrochemical characteristics of drawed wire have been researched using potentiodynamic method in 0.9%NaCl and field emission scanning electron microscope. The one-step drawed wire showed the formation of rough surface. The hardness and tensile strength of two-step drawed wire increased. For the case of two-step drawed wire, the corrosion resistance and pitting potential increased compared with one-step drawed wire due to the drawing induced small surface roughness, such as scratch. The passivation and active current density decreased as the reduction in area for drawing increased.
The ultrastructural parameters related to synaptic release of endings which are presynaptic to tooth pulp afferent terminals (p-endings) were analyzed to understand the underlying mechanism for presynaptic modulation of tooth pulp afferents. Tooth pulp afferents were labelled by applying wheat-germ agglutinin conjugated horseradish peroxidase to the rat right lower incisor, whereafter electron microscopic morphometric analysis with serial section and reconstruction of p-endings in the trigeminal oral nucleus was performed. The results obtained from 15 p-endings presynaptic to 11 labeled tooth pulp afferent terminals were as follows. P-endings contained pleomorphic vesicles and made symmetrical synaptic contacts with labeled terminals. The p-endings showed small synaptic release-related ultrastructural parameters: volume, $0.82{\pm}0.45{\mu}m^3$ ($mean{\pm}SD$); surface area, $4.50{\pm}1.76{\mu}m^2$; mitochondrial volume, $0.15{\pm}0.07{\mu}m^3$; total apposed surface area, $0.69{\pm}0.24{\mu}m^2$; active zone area, $0.10{\pm}0.04{\mu}m^2$; total vesicle number, $1045{\pm}668.86$; and vesicle density, $1677{\pm}684/{\mu}m^2$. The volume of the p-endings showed strong positive correlation with the following parameters: surface area (r=0.97, P<0.01), mitochondrial volume (r=0.56, P<0.05), and total vesicle number (r=0.73, P<0.05). However, the volume of p-endings did not positively correlate or was very weakly correlated with the apposed surface area (r=-0.12, P=0.675) and active zone area (r=0.46, P=0.084). These results show that some synaptic release-related ultrastructural parameters of p-endings on the tooth pulp afferent terminals follow the "size principle" of Pierce and Mendell (1993) in the trigeminal nucleus oralis, but other parameters do not. Our findings may demonstrate a characteristic feature of synaptic release associated with p-endings.
