This paper presents active noise control for the reduction of transmission noise passing through opening of enclosures. Enclosures are essential measure to protect noise propagation from operating machinery. Access openings of the enclosures are important path of noise leakage. First, we modeled and analyzed the noise characteristics passing through the openings of the enclosure generated by the operation of the machinery based on the finite element method. We then implemented a feedforward controller to actively control the acoustic power through the opening. Finally, we conducted optimization of placement of the reference sensors for several cases of the number of sensors. A good control performances were achieved using a minimum number of microphones arranged a optimal placement.
The active structural control has emerged as structural safety of structures against natural loadings such as earthquake and wind loadings. Of many control algorithms, Sliding-Mode Control (SMC) can design both linear controller and nonlinear controller. The robustness against parameter variations as well as excitation uncertainties that is imparted to the SMC due to its nonlinear control action, could make SMC an attractive control algorithm when dealing with structures where the external excitation constitutes the main uncertainty in the system. This paper demonstrates experimentally the efficacy of the SMC algorithm based on the active mass driver system in reducing the response of seismically excited buildings. The SMC control strategy is verified with the experimental study on the one-story building model equipped with the active mass driver.
The active noise cancellation system showing the effective convergence and stability has been studied by simplifying the controller structures using the weighting factors of control error path to the multi-channel filtered-x LMS algorithm which needs a lot of calculations and the performance has been verified experimentally. Besides, to implement the system performance in a vehicle cabin, experimental work for selecting the suitable numbers and positions of the microphones and speakers was accomplished. Effectively combining a TMS 320C 31 main processor conducting real number calculations and having various functions with other components, the purpose-built system board for active noise cancellation has been designed and with this board, car active noise cancellation system showing maximum stable 10dB noise reduction has been obtained at the car idling conditions above 3000rpm range.

This paper presents a hybrid control algorithm for the active noise control in the rectangular enclosure using an active/passive foam actuator. The hybrid control composes of the adaptive feedforward with feedback loop in which the adaptive feedforward control uses the well-known filtered-x LMS(least mean square) algorithm and the feedback loop consists of the sliding mode controller and observer. The hybrid control has its robustness for both transient and persistent external disturbances and increases the convergence speed due to the reduced variance of the jiltered-x signal by adding the feedback loop. The sliding mode control (SMC) is used to incorporate insensitivity to parameter variations and rejection of disturbances and the observer is used to get the state information in the controller deign. An active/passive smart foam actuator is used to minimize noise actively using an embedded PVDF film driven by an electrical input and passively using an absorption-foam. The error path dynamics is experimentally identified in the form of the auto-regressive and moving-average using the frequency domain identification technique. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the hybrid control and the feasibility of the smart foam actuator.
In this paper, Active Noise Control(ANC) algorithm is proposed based on the estimated frequency estimator of the reference signal. The conventional feedforward ANC algorithms should measure the reference and use it to calculate the gradient of the squared error and filter coefficients. For ANC systems applied to aircrafts and passenger ships, engines from which reference signal is usually measured is so far from seats where main part of controller is placed that the scheme might be difficult to implement or very costly. Feedback ANC algorithm which doesn't need to measure the reference uses the error signal to update the filter and is sensitive to unexpected transient noise like a sneeze, clapping of hands and so on The proposed algorithm estimates frequencies of the desired signal in real time using adaptive notch filter. New frequency estimation algorithm is proposed with the improved convergence rate, threshold SNR and computational simplicity. Reference is not measured but created with the estimated frequencies. It has strong similarity to the conventional feedback control because reference is made from error signal. Enhanced error signal is used to update the controller for better performance under the measurement noise and impact noise. The proposed ANC algorithm is compared with the conventional feedback control.
Noise propagated through the ventilation openings of enclosures is actively controlled using an FIR filter. The enclosures considered in this paper are used for isolating noise due to machinery. This method is of limited use because of the ventilation openings through which most of noise is propagated. Feedforward control strategy is incorporated to minimize the acoustic power propagated through the openings. For the real-time implementation, although it is numerical study, the controller is implemented using an FIR filter. The acoustic transfer functions of the pressure on the openings of the enclosure to the primary source and to the secondary source are numerically calculated using the boundary element method. The performance analysis of the active control is conducted with the time-domain simulation using Matlab Simulink.
In this paper an active random noise control using adaptive learning rate neural networks is presented. The adaptive learning rate strategy increases the learning rate by a small constant if the current partial derivative of the objective function with respect to the weight and the exponential average of the previous derivatives have the same sign, otherwise the learning rate is decreased by a proportion of its value. The use of an adaptive learning rate attempts to keep the learning step size as large as possible without leading to oscillation. It is expected that a cost function minimize rapidly and training time is decreased. Numerical simulations and experiments of active random noise control with the transfer function of the error path will be performed, to validate the convergence properties of the adaptive learning rate Neural Networks. Control results show that adaptive learning rate Neural Networks control structure can outperform linear controllers and conventional neural network controller for the active random noise control.
This paper reports a filtered velocity feedback(FVF) controller, which is an alternative to direct velocity feedback(DVFB) controller. The instability problems at high frequencies due to non-collocated sensor/actuator configuration with the DVFB can be alleviated by the proposed FVF controller. The FVF controller is designed to filter out the unstable high frequency response. The dynamics of a clamped plate under forces and moments and the FVF controllers are formulated. The stability of the control system and performance are investigated with the open loop transfer function(OLTF). It is found that the FVF controller has a higher gain margin than the corresponding DVFB controller owing to the rapid roll-off behavior at high frequencies. Although the gain margin cannot be fully utilized because of the enhancement at the high frequencies, the vibration at the modes lower than the tuning frequency is well controlled. This performance of the FVF controller is shown to be improved from that of the DVFB controller. It is, however, noted that the stability around the tuning frequency is very sensitive so that the enhancement in vibration level should be followed. The reduction performance at low frequencies using the FVF controller should be compromised with the enhancement in the vibration at high frequencies while designing the controller.
This paper presents the active control of flexible beam vibration. The beam was excited by a steady-state point force by mini shaker and the control was performed by mini shaker. To perform active control, least-mean-square (LMS) algorithm was used because it can easily obtain the complex transfer function in real-time. So an adaptive controller based on Filtered-X LMS algorithm was used and the controller was defined by minimizing the square of the response at a location of error sensor. In order to fine out performance tendency, input amplitude was changed in several cases and active vibration control was performed.
