In this present study, we investigated the effects of red ginseng extract and its active constituents - Rbl , Re, Rgl on cycloheximide (CXM)-induced amnesia in the passive avoidance task in rats. Red ginseng water extract at 0.05-0.5 g/kg could improve CXM-induced amnesia in rats, Furthermore, the recovery effect of Rbl at 10 mghg administered 30 min before training trial from CXM-induced amnesia was better than those of Rbl administered other time before or after training trial. Rbl at 0.001-0.1 mghg could significantly improve CXM-induced amnesia and at 1 mghg completely augmented, but at 10 mghg its improving effect slightly weakened. Rgl and Re at 0.3-10 mghg could significantly improve CXM-induced amnesia and Rgl at 10 mg/kg completely avgmented. On the other hand, Rbl at 10 mghg could prolong the step through latencies in the training trial. These results suggest the beneficial effect of red ginseng extract on CXM-induced amnesia in rats could mainly due to the contribution of its active constituents - Rbl, Re, Rgl. The improving effect of Rbl on CXM-induced amnesia was best among the three active constituents. But the reduction in the improving effect of Rbl at 10 mg/kg might be due to the decrease in motor activity and attention to the passive avoidance task.

Reducing energy consumption in a wireless video sensor network (WVSN) is a crucial problem because of the high video data volume and severe energy constraints of battery-powered WVSN nodes. In this paper, we present an adaptive dynamic resizing approach for a SRAM communication buffer in a WVSN node in order to reduce the energy consumption and thereby, to maximize the lifetime of the WVSN nodes. To reduce the power consumption of the communication part, which is typically the most energy-consuming component in the WVSN nodes, the radio needs to remain turned off during the data buffer-filling period as well as idle period. As the radio ON/OFF transition incurs extra energy consumption, we need to reduce the ON/OFF transition frequency, which requires a large-sized buffer. However, a large-sized SRAM buffer results in more energy consumption because SRAM power consumption is proportional to the memory size. We can dynamically adjust any active buffer memory size by utilizing a power-gating technique to reflect the optimal control on the buffer size. This paper aims at finding the optimal buffer size, based on the trade-off between the respective energy consumption ratios of the communication buffer and the radio part, respectively. We derive a formula showing the relationship between control variables, including active buffer size and total energy consumption, to mathematically determine the optimal buffer size for any given conditions to minimize total energy consumption. Simulation results show that the overall energy reduction, using our approach, is up to 40.48% (26.96% on average) compared to the conventional wireless communication scheme. In addition, the lifetime of the WVSN node has been extended by 22.17% on average, compared to the existing approaches.

Shape memory alloys (SMA) are often used in smart structures as active components. Their ability to provide large recovery forces and displacements has been useful in many applications, including devices for artificial muscles, active structural acoustic control, and shape control. Based on the 3-dimensional SMA constitutive equation in this paper, the radial displacement control of externally pressurized circular and semicircular composite cylinders under external pressure with a thin SMA layer bonded on its inner surface or inserted between composite layers in investigated using 3-dimensional finite element analysis. Upon actuation through resistive heating, SMAs start to transform from martensitic into austenitic state, simultaneously recover the prestrain, and thus cause the composite cylinders to go back to their original shapes of the cylinder cross-sections.

It has been known since the mid 1960s that Ag can be photodissolved in chalcogenide glasses to form materials with interesting technological properties. In the 40 years since, this effect has been used in diverse applications such as the fabrication of relief images in optical elements, micro photolithographic schemes, and for direct imaging by photoinduced Ag surface deposition. ReRAM, also known as conductive bridging RAM (CBRAM), is a resistive switching memory based on non-volatile formation and dissolution of a conductive filament in a solid electrolyte. Especially, Ag-doped chalcogenide glasses and thin films have become attractive materials for fundamental research of their structure, properties, and preparation. Ag-doped chalcogenide glasses have been used in the formation of solid electrolyte which is the active medium in ReRAM devices. In this paper, we investigated the nature of thin films formed by the photo-dissolution of Ag into Ge-Se glasses for use in ReRAM devices. These devices rely on ion transport in the film so produced to create electrically programmable resistance states [1-3]. We have demonstrated functionalities of Ag doped chalcogenide glasses based on their capabilities as solid electrolytes. Formation of such amorphous systems by the introduction of Ag+ ions photo-induced diffusion in thin chalcogenide films is considered. The influence of Ag+ ions is regarded in terms of diffusion kinetics and Ag saturation is related to the composition of the hosting material. Saturated Ag+ ions have been used in the formation of conductive filaments at the solid electrolyte which is the active medium in ReRAM devices. Following fabrication, the cell displays a metal-insulator-metal structure. We measured the I-V characteristics of a cell, similar results were obtained with different via sizes, due to the filamentary nature of resistance switching in ReRAM cell. As the voltage is swept from 0 V to a positive top electrode voltage, the device switches from a high resistive to a low resistive, or set. The low conducting, or reset, state can be restored by means of a negative voltage sweep where the switch-off of the device usually occurs.
Background: Panax ginseng root is used in traditional oriental medicine for human health. Its main active components such as saponins and polysaccharides have been widely evaluated for treating diseases, but secondary active components such as oligosaccharides have been rarely studied. This study aimed to assess the impact of water-soluble ginseng oligosaccharides (WGOS), which were isolated from the warm-water extract of Panax ginseng root, on scopolamine-induced cognitive impairment in mice and its antineuroinflammatory mechanisms. Methods: We investigated the impact of WGOS on scopolamine-induced cognitive impairment in mice by using Morris water maze and novel object recognition task. We also analyzed the impact of WGOS on scopolamine-induced inflammatory response (e.g., the hyperexpression of proinflammatory cytokines IL-$1{\beta}$ and IL-6 and astrocyte activation) by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP) immunohistochemical staining. Results: WGOS pretreatment protected against scopolamine-induced learning and memory deficits in the Morris water maze and in the novel object recognition task. Furthermore, WGOS pretreatment downregulated scopolamine-induced hyperexpression of proinflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-$1{\beta}$ and IL-6 mRNA and astrocyte activation in the hippocampus. These results indicate that WGOS can protect against scopolamine-induced alterations in learning and memory and inflammatory response. Conclusion: Our data suggest that WGOS may be beneficial as a medicine or functional food supplement to treat disorders with cognitive deficits and increased inflammation.
Ontology-based context models are widely used in ubiquitous computing environment because they have advantages in the acquisition of conceptual context through inferencing, context sharing, and context reusing. Among the benefits, inferencing enables context-aware applications to use conceptual contexts which cannot be acquired by sensors. However, inferencing causes processing delay and thus becomes the major obstacle to the implementation of context-aware applications. The delay becomes longer as the amount of contexts increases. In this paper, we propose a context pre-fetching method to reduce the size of contexts to be processed in a working memory in attempt to speed up inferencing. For this, we extend the query-tree method to identify contexts relevant to the queries of a context-aware application. Maintaining the pre-fetched contexts optimal in a working memory, the processing delay of inference reduces without the loss of the benefits of ontology-based context model. We apply the proposed scheme to our ubiquitous computing middleware, Active Surroundings, and demonstrate the performance enhancement by experiments.
The purpose of this study is to conduct a theoretical and empirical study to identify the appropriate organizational culture for the activation of CRM. The contents of this study are consisted of two parts: First, using the organizational learning theory originated in the organizational behavior area this study proposed which culture related factors are indispensable for the activation of CRM. Second, the propositions in the first part were confirmed by analyzing the survey data from the CRM practitioners in Korean companies. Conclusively the results show the follows: First, for the activation of CRM not only the individual learning(including team learning) but also the enterprise-wide sharing of the information is the crucial element. Second, for the activation of the individual learning, the enterprise-wide participation, the active experimental trials based on the empowerment, and the facilitative leadership of top management must be encouraged. Third, for the activation of the information sharing the active communication among the departments and the possession of organizational memory must be realized.

A reader protocol is an interface between a host and RFID readers. There are several standards for reader protocol such as EPCglobal Low Level Reader Protocol (LLRP) 1.0.1, EPCglobal Reader Protocol (RP) 1.1, and ISO/IEC 15961/15962. Unfortunately, these standards focus on the passive RFID system, and so they are not appropriate for the active RFID system. In this paper, we implemented an efficient reader protocol for the active RFID system, which is based on EPCglobal LLRP 1.0.1, but smoothing/filtering functions of EPCglobal RP 1.1 are added. This protocol is designed to configure air interface parameters for active RFID readers and tags. It can reduce the amount of data transfer between the reader and host by filtering function, and can improve the performance of tag collection by smoothing function. In addition, it can remove inefficiency caused by tag memory data change according to the standards of ISO/IEC 15961/15962. In the real-world environment, we evaluated the performance of our implemented reader protocol using one RFID reader and 45 tags.
In this paper, we propose a method that can be applied to the efficient implementation of multi-channel active noise controller. Since the normalized MFxLMS (Modified Filtered-x Least Mean Square) algorithm for the multi-channel active noise control requires a large amount of computation, the difficulty has lied in implementing the algorithm using a low-cost MCU (Microcontoller Unit). We implement the multi-channel active noise controller efficiently by optimizing the software based on the features of the MCU. By maximizing the usage of single-cycle MAC (Multiply- Accumulate) operations and minimizing move operations of the delay memory, we can achieve more than 3 times the performance in the aspect of computational optimization, and by parellel processing using the auxillary processor included in the MCU, we can also obtain more than 4 times the performance. In addition, the usage of additional parts can be minimized by maximizing the usage of the peripherals embedded in the MCU.

Schizophrenia is a severe psychiatric disorder and characterized by positive symptom (i.e., delusions, hallucinations), negative symptom (i.e., lack of emotion, social withdrawal), and cognitive impairment. Previously, we reported that the ethanolic extract of Prunella vulgaris var. lilacina attenuated the MK-801-induced schizophrenia-like behaviors such as prepulse inhibition (PPI) deficits and cognitive impairment in mice. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether danshensu isolated from P. vulgaris var. lilacina attenuates MK-801-induced sensorimotor gating dysfunction (PPI deficits), hyperlocomotion, and memory impairment in mice. Acute administration of danshensu (1, 3, or 10 mg/kg) significantly ameliorated the MK-801-induced PPI deficits in the acoustic startle response test. We also observed that the impaired recognition memory induced by MK-801 was attenuated by danshensu (1 mg/kg) in the novel object recognition test. However, danshensu failed to reverse the MK-801-induced hyperlocomotion in the open-field test. Collectively, the present results indicate danshensu would be an active agent for treating neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia.
