A Simplified Method for Predicting Failure Probability of Pipelines with Corrosion Defects (부식결함을 가진 배관의 파손확률 예측을 위한 단순화된 방법)

  • An alternative method is presented for predicting failure probability of pipelines with corrosion defects in this paper. The failure of corroded pipeline occurs when the operating pressure is grater than the remaining strength of the pipeline, and a limit state function can be defined as the differences between the remaining strength and the operating pressure. Then, based on structural reliability theory, we can estimate the failure probability of corroded pipeline, which is dependent on elapsed time of the pipeline with active corrosion defects. In this study, a root finding (RF) method has been adopted to solve the limit state function instead of Monte-Carlo simulation (MCS) method which traditionally has been employed to solve those kinds of problems. The calculation results shows that there are only small differences between the RF and the MCS method but the RF has higher efficiency in calculation than the MCS.

  • Fighter jets employ guided missiles equipped with seekers to counter enemy air threats. Short range guided missiles(SRM) usually carry infrared(IR) seekers and are used to engage targets within visual range. On the other hand, medium range guided missiles(MRM) often utilize radio frequency(RF) seekers to engage targets beyond visual range. Medium range guided missiles do not activate their seekers until they reach the detection range of the seeker, and the aircraft's radar guides them for a certain distance. This guidance method is called Missile Data Link(MDL), and it can be implemented in either one-way or two-way communication modes, depending on the missile's communication system. In this paper, we discuss MDL based on these two communication modes, along with the integration of RADAR, mission computers, and guided missiles.

Hybrid MBE Growth of Crack-Free GaN Layers on Si (110) Substrates

  • Two main MBE growth techniques have been used: plasma-assisted MBE (PA-MBE), which utilizes a rf plasma to supply active nitrogen, and ammonia MBE, in which nitrogen is supplied by pyrolysis of NH3 on the sample surface during growth. PA-MBE is typically performed under metal-rich growth conditions, which results in the formation of gallium droplets on the sample surface and a narrow range of conditions for optimal growth. In contrast, high-quality GaN films can be grown by ammonia MBE under an excess nitrogen flux, which in principle should result in improved device uniformity due to the elimination of droplets and wider range of stable growth conditions. A drawback of ammonia MBE, on the other hand, is a serious memory effect of NH3 condensed on the cryo-panels and the vicinity of heaters, which ruins the control of critical growth stages, i.e. the native oxide desorption and the surface reconstruction, and the accurate control of V/III ratio, especially in the initial stage of seed layer growth. In this paper, we demonstrate that the reliable and reproducible growth of GaN on Si (110) substrates is successfully achieved by combining two MBE growth technologies using rf plasma and ammonia and setting a proper growth protocol. Samples were grown in a MBE system equipped with both a nitrogen rf plasma source (SVT) and an ammonia source. The ammonia gas purity was >99.9999% and further purified by using a getter filter. The custom-made injector designed to focus the ammonia flux onto the substrate was used for the gas delivery, while aluminum and gallium were provided via conventional effusion cells. The growth sequence to minimize the residual ammonia and subsequent memory effects is the following: (1) Native oxides are desorbed at $750^{\circ}C$ (Fig. (a) for [$1^-10$] and [001] azimuth) (2) 40 nm thick AlN is first grown using nitrogen rf plasma source at $900^{\circ}C$ nder the optimized condition to maintain the layer by layer growth of AlN buffer layer and slightly Al-rich condition. (Fig. (b)) (3) After switching to ammonia source, GaN growth is initiated with different V/III ratio and temperature conditions. A streaky RHEED pattern with an appearance of a weak ($2{\times}2$) reconstruction characteristic of Ga-polarity is observed all along the growth of subsequent GaN layer under optimized conditions. (Fig. (c)) The structural properties as well as dislocation densities as a function of growth conditions have been investigated using symmetrical and asymmetrical x-ray rocking curves. The electrical characteristics as a function of buffer and GaN layer growth conditions as well as the growth sequence will be also discussed. Short Term Outcomes and Prognostic Factors Based on Radiofrequency Thermocoagulation on Lumbar Medial Branches (요추 후지내측지에 대한 고주파열응고술의 단기 성적과 예후 인자)

  • Background: Lumbar zygapophysial joints are a common source of chronic lower back pain and radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RF) of the medial branches (MB) has been shown to be effective at providing substantial pain relief for chronic low back pain. Therefore, we carried out this study to determine the short term outcomes and prognostic factors of RF on the MB of patients with lumbar facet syndrome. Methods: We performed RF in fourteen patients who showed greater than 80% pain relief up to three times after a diagnostic MB block was conducted using 0.3 ml of 0.5% bupivacaine. Using 10 cm curved electrodes with 10-mm active tip, a 60 second, $80^{\circ}C$ lesion was made after electrical stimulation at 50 Hz for sensory and 2 Hz for motor nerve testing. The degree of pain relief was then assessed after 2 weeks, and again after 3 months using a visual analog scale (VAS) and a four point Likert scale. The outcome was regarded as 'success' if at least a 50% reduction in the VAS was observed. Possible prognostic factors between the two groups were also evaluated Results: The success rate was 71.4% (10/14) after three months of follow-up. However, there were transient complications, such as neuritis like syndrome, in 4 patients. In addition, short symptom duration and low minimal voltage (< 0.4 V) for sensory stimulation were shown to be the relevant prognostic factors for a successful outcome. Conclusions: RF may be an alternative to repeated MB block or intraarticular injection for palliation of lumbar facet syndrome. For better outcomes, early diagnosis and strict patient selection should be coupled with efforts to avoid anatomically incorrect RF.

Development of Polarization-Controllable Active Phased Array Antenna for Receiving Satellite Broadcasting (편파가변 위성 방송 수신용 능동 위상 배열 안테나 개발)

  • We herein present a study on the active phased array antenna for receiving satellite broadcasting that can electrically align its polarization to that of target transmitters in its moving condition or in the Skew angle arrangement of the broadcasting satellite receiver. Hence, we have developed an active phased array structure composed of the self-developed Vivaldi antenna and multifunction core (MFC) chip, receiving RF front end module, and control units. In particular, the new Vivaldi antenna designed in the Ku-band of 10.7 - 14.5 GHz to receive one desired polarization mode such as the horizontal or vertical by means of an MFC chip and other control units that can control the amplitude and phase of each antenna element. The test results verified that cross-polarization property is 20 dB or higher and the primary beam can be scanned clearly at approximately ${\pm}60^{\circ}$.

Manufacture and characteristic evaluation of Amorphous Indium-Gallium-Zinc-Oxide (IGZO) Thin Film Transistors

  • Recently, TFTs based on amorphous oxide semiconductors (AOSs) such as ZnO, InZnO, ZnSnO, GaZnO, TiOx, InGaZnO(IGZO), SnGaZnO, etc. have been attracting a grate deal of attention as potential alternatives to existing TFT technology to meet emerging technological demands where Si-based or organic electronics cannot provide a solution. Since, in 2003, Masuda et al. and Nomura et al. have reported on transparent TFTs using ZnO and IGZO as active layers, respectively, much efforts have been devoted to develop oxide TFTs using aforementioned amorphous oxide semiconductors as their active layers. In this thesis, I report on the performance of thin-film transistors using amorphous indium gallium zinc oxides for an active channel layer at room temperature. $SiO_2$ was employed as the gate dielectric oxide. The amorphous indium gallium zinc oxides were deposited by RF magnetron sputtering. The carrier concentration of amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide was controlled by oxygen pressure in the sputtering ambient. Devices are realized that display a threshold voltage of 1.5V and an on/off ration of > $10^9$ operated as an n-type enhancement mode with saturation mobility with $9.06\;cm^2/V{\cdot}s$. The devices show optical transmittance above 80% in the visible range. In conclusion, the fabrication and characterization of thin-film transistors using amorphous indium gallium zinc oxides for an active channel layer were reported. The operation of the devices was an n-type enhancement mode with good saturation characteristics.

  • The suppression of high-intensity blob structures in the scrape-off layer (SOL) by ion-cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) power, leading to a decrease in the turbulent fluctuation level, is observed first in the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) experiment. This suppression effect from ICRF power injection is global in the whole SOL at EAST, i.e. blob structures both in the regions that are magnetically connected to the active ICRF launcher and in the regions that are not connected to the active ICRF launcher could be suppressed by ICRF power. However, more ICRF power is required to reach the full blob structure suppression effect in the regions that are magnetically unconnected to the active launcher than in the regions that are magnetically connected to the active launcher. Studies show that a possible reason for the blob suppression could be the enhanced Er × B shear flow in the SOL, which is supported by the shaper radial gradient in the floating potential profiles sensed by the divertor probe arrays with increasing ICRF power. The local RF wave power unabsorbed by the core plasma is responsible for the modification of potential profiles in the SOL regions.

A Study on the Cytotoxic Activity of Garlic(Allium Sativum) Extract Against Cancer Cells (마늘중 지용성 성분의 암세포증식 억제효과 연구)

  • This study was devised to observe the cytotoxic activities of garlic extracts against various cancer cells, that is, murine leukemic lymphocyte(L1210 and P388) and human rectal(HRT-18) and colon cancer cells(HCT-48 and HT-29) in vitro, and murine ascitic tumor cell(S-180) in vivo. Each cell-line except S-180 was cultured in medium containing serial concentration of the garlic extract in vitro. Inhibitory effect n the growth rate of the cancer cells was stronger in extracts of petroleum ether than that of ethanol. A lipid soluble compound in the extracts of garlic was cytocidal to murine leukemic cells, human rectal and colon cancer cells in vitro. The growth rates of the cancer cells in medium containing garlic extracts were inhibited gradually to a significant degree in proportion to the increase of the extract concentration. The cytotoxic activity of garlic active fraction from TLC was about 2.3 times more potent than that of crude garlic extract, one unit of cytotoxic activity against L1210 cells being equivalent to 4.2$\mu\textrm{g}$ and 1.8$\mu\textrm{g}$ from the crude garlic and active fraction, respectively. The Rf value of the active fraction on silica-gel TLC was 0.18 in condition that petroleum ether/ethyl ether/acetic acid mixture(90:10:1, v/v/v) was used as a developing solvent. The survival times of mice inoculated with S-180 cells were extended about 1.5 to 2 times in the groups treated with garlic extract(through i.p. and oral administration) compared with their control group(no garlic extract treatment). Observations were carried out on S-180. Ethanol extracts of garlic injured markedly tumor cells within 3 hours after injection.

Reduction of gate leakage current for AlGaN/GaN HEMT by ${N_2}O$ plasma (${N_2}O$ 플라즈마에 의한 AlGaN/GaN HEMT의 누설전류 감소)

  • AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) were fabricated and the effect of ${N_2}O$ plasma on the electrical characteristics of the devices was investigated. The HEMT exposed to ${N_2}O$ plasma formed by 40 W of RF power in a chamber with pressure of 20 mTorr at a temperature of $200^{\circ}C$, exhibited a reduction of gate leakage current from 246 nA to 1.2 pA by 10 seconds treatment. The current between the two isolated active regions reduced from 3 uA to 7 nA and the sheet resistance of the active layer was lowered also. The variations of electrical characteristics for HEMT were occurred within a short time expose of 10 seconds and the successive expose did not influence on the improvements of gate leakage characteristics and conductivity of the active region. The reduced leakage current level was not varied by successive $SiO_2$ deposition and its removal. The transconductnace and drain current of AlGaN/GaN HEMTs were increased also by the expose to the ${N_2}O$ plasma.

Development of Planar Active Electronically Scanned Array(AESA) Radar Prototype for Airborne Fighter (항공기용 평면형 능동 전자주사식 위상 배열(AESA) 레이더 프로토 타입 개발)

  • This paper presents a design, fabrication and the test results of planar active electronically scanned array(AESA) radar prototype for airborne fighter applications using transmit/receive(T/R) module hybrid technology. LIG Nex1 developed a AESA radar prototype to obtain key technologies for airborne fighter's radar. The AESA radar prototype consists of a radiating array, T/R modules, a RF manifold, distributed power supplies, beam controllers, compact receivers with ADC(Analog-to-Digital Converter), a liquid-cooling unit, and an appropriate structure. The AESA antenna has a 590 mm-diameter, active-element area capable of containing 536 T/R modules. Each module is located to provide a triangle grid with $14.7\;mm{\times}19.5\;mm$ spacing among T/R modules. The array dissipates 1,554 watts, with a DC input of 2,310 watts when operated at the maximum transmit duty factor. The AESA radar prototype was tested on near-field chamber and the results become equal in expected beam pattern, providing the accurate and flexible control of antenna beam steering and beam shaping.
