This paper suggests an algorithm to improve the tracking performance for an underwater acoustic target using the feedback information of acoustic feature of a target. While conventional tracking algorithms use detected acoustic signals only, the proposed algorithm uses detected acoustic signals and target feature information as well. Since the proposed algorithm tracks only the selected measurements using target feature information, it prevents onset of unnecessary tracks and improves tracking performance for target of interest. Furthermore, it optimizes tracking parameters for the target of interest and guarantees robustness and consistency of the track. Some simulations are performed to demonstrate the improved tracking performance of the proposed algorithm.

Helmet Mounted Display(HMD) has great advantages on the navigation and mission symbologies for the pilot's forward looking display and, therefore, has been remarkably drawing attention as the up coming display of the next generation aircraft. The essential technology to process the Line of Sight-Foward(LOS-F) data in real-time is to estimate exact helmet situation and position. In this paper, we research a acoustic helmet tracking technique. For the reason that mechanical acoustic noises might interfere with Helmet Tracking System(HTS) and unnecessary acoustic noises are inevitable when using acoustic technique, this approach has not been adapted. In order to overcome this problem. We propose that acoustic wave of which the wave length is longer than audio frequency and, especially, we used beating signal envelope which is composed of two close high frequency.

The performance of a tracking system is greatly increased if multiple types of sensors are combined to achieve the objective of the tracking instead of relying on single type of sensor. To conduct the multi-modal tracking, we have previously developed a multi-modal sensor-based tracking model where acoustic sensors mainly track the objects and visual sensors compensate the tracking errors [1]. In this paper, we find a network synchronization problem appearing in the developed tracking system. The problem is caused by the different location and traffic characteristics of multi-modal sensors and non-synchronized arrival of the captured sensor data at a processing server. To effectively deliver the sensor data, we propose a time-based packet aggregation algorithm where the acoustic sensor data are aggregated based on the sampling time and sent to the server. The delivered acoustic sensor data is then compensated by visual images to correct the tracking errors and such a compensation process improves the tracking accuracy in ideal case. However, in real situations, the tracking improvement from visual compensation can be severely degraded due to the aforementioned network synchronization problem, the impact of which is analyzed by simulations in this paper. To resolve the network synchronization problem, we differentiate the service level of sensor traffic based on Weight Round Robin (WRR) scheduling at the routers. The weighting factor allocated to each queue is calculated by a proposed Delay-based Weight Allocation (DWA) algorithm. From the simulations, we show the traffic differentiation model can mitigate the non-synchronization of sensor data. Finally, we analyze expected traffic behaviors of the tracking system in terms of acoustic sampling interval and visual image size.
Bearing information of target is used critically for target tracking in underwater environment. In passive sonar, target bearing measurements are obtained by processing the acoustic signal emanating from the target. PDA tracking algorithm is usually applied in this case since bearing measurements have several peaks due to interference with other acoustic sources or reflections from underwater media. In this paper, we propose a modified PDA algorithm adopting new probabilistic distributions of the number, position, and amplitude of peaks based on the analysis of real data. This algorithm is tested on real and artificially generated data. The computer simulation result shows improvement of the tracking performance.

This paper considers the object tracking problem in three dimensional (3-D) space when the azimuth and elevation of the object are available from the passive acoustic sensor. The particle filtering technique can be directly applied to estimate the 3-D object location, but we propose to decompose the 3-D particle filter into the three planes' particle filters, which are individually designed for the 2-D bearings-only tracking problems. 2-D bearing information is derived from the azimuth and elevation of the object to be used for the 2-D particle filter. Two estimates of three planes' particle filters are selected based on the characterization of the acoustic sensor operation in a noisy environment. The Cramer-Rao Lower Bound of the proposed 2-D particle filter-based algorithm is derived and compared against the algorithm that is based on the direct 3-D particle filter.

In wireless sensor network (WSN) environments, environmental noises are generated by, for example, small passing animals, crickets chirping or foliage blowing and will interfere target detection if the noises are higher than the sensor threshold value. For accurate tracking by acoustic WSNs, these environmental noises should be filtered out before initiating track. This paper presents the effect of environmental noises on target tracking and proposes a new algorithm for the noise mitigation in acoustic WSNs. We find that our noise mitigation algorithm works well even for targets with sensing range shorter than the sensor separation as well as with longer sensing ranges. It is also found that noise duration at each sensor affects the performance of the algorithm. A detection algorithm is also presented to account for the Doppler effect which is an important consideration for tracking higher-speed ground targets. For tracking, we use the weighted sensor position centroid to represent the target position measurement and use the Kalman filter (KF) for tracking.
The effective tracking area of ultra short baseline (USBL) systems strongly relates to the safety of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). This problem has not been studied previously. A method for determining the effective tracking area using acoustic theory is proposed. Ray acoustic equations are used to draw rays which ascertain the effective space. The sonar equation is established in order to discover the available range of the USBL system and the background noise level using sonar characteristics. The available range defines a hemisphere like enclosure. The overlap of the effective space with the hemisphere is the effective area for USBL systems tracking AUVs. Lake and sea trials show the proposed method's validity.

In this paper, we propose a multiple underwater object classification and tracking algorithm using the narrowband tonal and frequency line features extracted from the frequency spectrum of the acoustic signal. The general algorithm using the wideband and narrowband energy has a high tracking error when objects are close and cross each other. But the proposed algorithm shows a good tracking performance for the simulation scenarios generated by the real acoustic data.

In this paper, we propose a novel approach to residual echo suppression (RES) algorithm based on tracking echo-presence uncertainty (TEPU) to improve the performance of acoustic echo suppression (AES) in the frequency domain. In the proposed method, the ratio of the microphone input and the echo-suppressed output signal power is employed as the threshold value for the decision rule to estimate the echo-presence uncertainty applied to the RES filter. The proposed RES scheme estimates the echo presence uncertainty in each frequency bin and effectively reduces residual echo signal in a simple fashion. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by the objective test and yields better results compared with the conventional schemes.

This paper proposes a quasi-optimal linear DOA (Direction-of-Arrival) estimator which is necessary for the development of a real-time robot auditory system tracking moving acoustic source. It is well known that the use of conventional nonlinear filtering schemes may result in the severe performance degradation of DOA estimation and not be preferable for real-time implementation. These are mainly due to the inherent nonlinearity of the acoustic signal model used for DOA estimation. This motivates us to consider a new uncertain linear acoustic signal model based on the linear prediction relation of a noisy sinusoid. Using the suggested measurement model, it is shown that the resultant DOA estimation problem is cast into the NCRKF (Non-Conservative Robust Kalman Filtering) problem [12]. NCRKF-based DOA estimator provides reliable DOA estimates of a fast moving acoustic source in spite of using the noise-corrupted measurement matrix in the filter recursion and, as well, it is suitable for real-time implementation because of its linear recursive filter structure. The computational efficiency and DOA estimation performance of the proposed method are evaluated through the computer simulations.
