  • This study aims to obtain machining characteristics during AFM (Atomic force Microscope) machining of silicon wafers and to monitor the machining states using acoustic emission. As in micro scale machining, two distinct regimes of deformation, i. e. ploughing regime and cutting regime were observed. First, the transition between the two regimes are investigated by analyzing the "pile-up" during machining. As far as in process monitoring is concerned, in the ploughing repime, no chips have been formed and related AE RMS values are relatively low, In the mean time, in the cutting regime, the RMS values are significantly higher than the ploughing regime, with apparent chip formation. From the results, we found out that the proposed scheme can be used for the monitoring of nanomachining, especially for the characterization of nanocutting mode transition.

  • Friction Welds are formed by the mechanisms of diffusion as well as mechanical inter-locking. The severe plastic flow at the interface by the forge action of the process brings the subsurface so close together that detection of any unbounded area becomes very difficult. No reliable method is available so fat to determine the weld quality nondestructively. The paper presents an attempt to determine weld strength quantitatively using the ultrasonic pulseecho method. The new approach calculates the coefficient of reflection based on measured amplitudes of the echoes. This coefficient provides a single quantitative measurement which involves both acoustic energy reflected at the welded interface as well as transmitted across the interface. As a result, it was known that the quantitative relationship between the coefficient and the weld strength (torsional strength) could be drawn.

  • This paper is to investigate a crack for plasma sprayed MCrAlY coated material by acoustic emission method in 4-point bending test. The CoNiCrAlY is coated on Inconel-718 by vacuum plasma spray process. Micro-hardness measurement was conducted by means of Micro Vickers-hardness indentor. The porosity of coating layer was measured using a SEM and Image Analyzer. AE monitoring system is composed of PICO type sensor, a wide band preamplifier(40dB), a PC and AE DSP(16/32 PAC) board. The AE count, Hit and energy of coating specimens is measured according to coating thickness.

  • Underwater acoustic communications have made considerable advances in the past decade. The purpose of this paper is to achieve the underwater communication by ultrasonic sensors and to investigate conditions of good underwater acoustic communicators. As a result of this experiments, the ultrasonic sensors, MA40E7R/S, made by Nicera can be used as ultrasonic transducers for underwater communication using AM(Amplitude Modulation) signal and Transmission Loss is 17.328[dB] at 65[cm]. To make a good underwater communicator, proper diameter of disk PZT transduers is the one of most important factors, because radiation of acoustic wave depends on proper diameter of transduers and the transmission loss strongly depends on the spreading loss.

  • When chopped light inpinges on some condenced matters such as HgS, HgI2 and GaSe semiconductors, in an enclosed cell, the acoustic signals are produced within the cell. These acoustic signals were detected by using a gas-phase microphone in order to investigate the physical properties of the samples. In order to carry out investigation, PA-cell was first designed and made so as to produce higher sensitivity to acoustic signals. Second, an analysis of the photoacoustic spectrum of the various compounds was carried out to obtain the intensity of the PA-signal in terms of light wavelength and to calculate the energy band gaps occuring according to energy transitions. The agreement between the results obtained by this conventional PAS technique and the results obtained by the optical spectrum method was good. In additional analysis conducted on the basis of the R-G theory and the Sze theory are capable of determining the characteristics of energy transition of semiconductors.

  • We have investigated on the development of 2-2 piezocomposites that have better piezoelectric activity and lower acoustic impedance than those of conventional piezoceramics. In this study, we have investigated the piezoelectric and acoustic properties of 2-2 piezocomposites sensor which were fabricated using dice-and-fill technique for the different volume fraction of PZT. The resonance characteristics measured by an impedance analyzer were similar to the analysis of finite element method. The resonance characteristics and the electromechanical coupling factor were the best when the volume fraction PZT was 0.6. It also showed the highest result from the standpoint of sensitivity, bandwidth and ring-down property and so on at the same condition. The specific characteristics shows that the 2-2 piezocomposites turned out to be superior to the ultrasonic sensor composed by single phase PZT.

  • In this study, the residual stress and the acoustic emission Charactreistics from fatigue crack propagation were investigated, bused on the welded material of STS316L. The residual stress of welding locations could be evaluated by ultrasonic parameters, such as L$_{CR}$ wave velocity and L$_{CR}$ wave frequency; the residual stress between base metal and weld metal was evaluated. In the fatigue tests, three types of signals were observed, regardless of specimen condition, base metal, and weld metal. Based on NDE analysis of AE signals by the time-frequency analysis method, it should also be possible to evaluate, in real-time, the crack propagation and final fracture process, resulting from various damages and defects in welded structural members.

  • In underwater acoustic communication, the transmitted signals are severely influenced by the reflections from both the sea surface and the sea bottom. As very large reflection signals from these boundaries cause an inter-symbol interference (ISI) effect, the communication quality worsens. A channel estimation-based equalizer is usually adopted to compensate for the reflected signals under the acoustic communication channel. In this study, a feed-forward equalizer (FFE) with the least mean squares (LMS) algorithm was applied to a quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) transmission system. Two different types of equalizers were adopted in the QPSK system, namely a real-coefficient equalizer and a complex-coefficient equalizer. The performance of the complex-coefficient equalizer was better than that of two real-coefficient equalizers. Therefore, a Hilbert transform was applied to the real-coefficient binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) system to obtain a complex-coefficient BPSK system. Consequently, we obtained better results than those of a real-coefficient equalizer.

  • Acoustic emission (AE) is known to be sensitive to fracture process and so it was expected that AE data may propose as a means of monitoring the fracture information. The aim of this study is to analyze the characteristic of AE signal emitted from glass during Vickers indentation. To observe AE characteristics by surface effect, both glass and coating glass were studied. During Vickers indentation loading, AE signal resulted from penny-like crack is detected. During Vickers indentation unloading, AE signal resulted from both radial/median crack and lateral crack is detected. In case of indentation on glass, the emission energy(${\epsilon}$) is found to be approximately proportional to the fourth power of the crack length. In case of indentation on coating glass, the emission energy(${\epsilon}$) is approximately proportional to the crack length.

  • In this study, the leak detection technique of pressure vessel by using acoustic emission(AE) signal is suggested experimentally. The leak of pressure vessel is located at the welding line due to welding defects. we measured the AE signal using Rl5I sensor, and examined the AE parameters in leak condition. It is investigated that the mean value of AE signal is dependent on leak source location. So the absolute mean value of AE signal is adopted as dominant AE parameter. We proposed leak detection algorithm using AE signal mean value for monitoring the leak source location.
