  • Globally, customer appreciation and demand for quieter products has driven noise control engineers to develop efficient and quieter products in a relatively short time. In the vehicles and ship industry, noise has become an important attribute because of the competitive market and increasing customer awareness. Noise reduction is often achieved through structural modifications by typical approaches. In the present paper, author describes a fundamental study on optimum design of curvature. Bezier curve. and rib attachment to reduce noise from simple panel using a genetic algorithm(GA). The acoustic optimization procedure employed p-FEM for structural analysis, the Rayleigh integral method for acoustic analysis and the GA for searching optimum design. In the optimization procedure. the objective function to be minimized is the average sound power radiated from an objective structure over a given frequency range $0{\sim}300$ Hz.

  • The purpose of the study is to develop the normal voice database and to analyze the acoustic characteristics of Korean adults' voices by gender using MDVP. Eight categories in the 34 parameters of MDVP were analyzed in the voices of 170 Korean normal adults taken from /a/ vowel. Among them, Fundamental Frequency Parameters and Frequency Perturbation Parameters were significantly different by gender. In addition, Fundamental Frequency Parameters of our data were remarkably different from the data suggested in the MDVP program which currently used in clinics. Therefore, the data obtained from the current study can be effectively used for the diagnosis of voice disorders of Korean adults as the standard parameter values of MDVP.

  • This study is to investigate a fracture characteristics of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) under the tensile loading as a function of acoustic emission (AE) according to the frequency analysis (transient mode) and AE source location (location mode). It was found that the fracture mechanism of AE frequency analysis was a useful tool for the estimation of different type of fracture in CFRP, i.e., matrix(epoxy resin) cracking, delamitation and fiber breakage same as AE amplitude distribution.

  • This paper focuses on the numerical prediction of airflow-induced sound in DVD drives. As a first step, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is conducted to evaluate flow field characteristics due to the high-speed disk rotation, and to support the acoustic analysis. Acoustic analogy based on Ffowcs Wi1liams-Hawkings (FW-H) equation is adopted to predict aeroacoustic noise patterns. The integral solution for quadrupole volume source is included to identify the turbulence noise generated inside the DVD tray. The strength of sound pressure revel with respect to rotating speed is discussed to meet upfront demand on the high fidelity product development. The present study also focuses on the noise directivity and examines how much the sound noise is sensitive to change in rotating speed. Near-field noise is strongly affected by the flow field characteristic, which is caused by the complex shape of the tray. For a mid-field, the quadrupole noise play as a counterpart of thickness noise or loading noise, so it generates different sound noise Patterns compared with those in the near field.

  • Automatic monitoring of cutting process is one of the most important technologies for increasing the stability and the reliability of unmanned manufacturing system. In this study, basic methods which use the acoustic emission (AE) signals and cutting forces were proposed to monitor flank wear (width of flank wear) quantiatively. First, in order to detect flank wear, it was investigated that the influence of cutting conditions, that is, cutting velocity, feed and depth of cut, on AE signals (${AE_rms}$) and cutting forces. Furthermore, the relation between flank wear and the measured signals (${AE_rms}$, cutting force) was discussed.

  • Korean stop consonants are well known for their tripple distinction. In word initial position lax, tense and aspirated consonants are all voiceless. They are differentiated by the degree of tension, aspiration and VOT(voice onset time). But in intervocalic position, lax consonants become voiced. In this study I compare the acoustic features of Korean intervocalic lax and tense stops. The closure duration of lax stops is shorter than that of tense consonants. The preceding vowel length is longer in tan than that in tense consonants. I modify the above acoustic characteristics by an experimental methods. For example, I shorten the closure duration of intervocalic tense stops by 5 steps. r also do auditory tests which will show us listener's reaction on the above examples. And do the same job with the preceding vowels. According to the auditory test, the closure duration does an important role in differentiating Korean intervocalic lax and tense stops. But the preceding vowel length has almost nothing to do with the distinction between lax and tense stops. So I conclude that acoustic features also have hierarchy. Some features have categorical characteristics and others don't.

  • It is critical to assess the characteristics of flame response to pressure perturbations for the understanding of nonlinear combustion instabilities. Previous studies can be grouped into flame response upon perturbed, fresh air and fuel mixture, and flame response directly perturbed from longitudinal waves. The present study presents experimental methodology for the understanding of the flame response exposed to transverse acoustic waves generated by loud speakers.

  • It was well recognized that the damages associated mainly with the aging of civil infrastructures were one of very serious problems for assurance of safety and reliability. Recently carbon fiber sheet(CFS) has been widely used for reinforcement and rehabilitation of damaged concrete beam. However, the fundamental mechanism of load transfer and its load-resistant for carbon fiber sheet reinforced concrete are not fully understood. In this study, three point bending test has been carried out to understand the damage progress and the micro-failure mechanism of CFS reinforced mortars. For this purpose, four different types of specimens are used, that is, mortar, steel bar reinforced mortar, CFS reinforced mortar, and steel bar and CFS reinforced morter. Acoustic Emission(AE) technique was used to evaluate the characteristics of damage progress and the failure mechanism of specimens. in addition, two-dimensional AE source location was also performed to monitor crack initiation and propagation processes for these specimens.

  • The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate characteristics of English pitch accents uttered by Korean speakers. Six English sentences were uttered five times by fifteen male undergraduate and graduate students from three groups, Seoul, Yongnam and Honam dialect speakers. We compared the subjects' data with the data of a native speaker of English as model pronunciation of English pitch accents. Acoustic features(Fo, duration, amplitude) were measured from sound spectrograms made by the PC Works. Results showed that (1) acoustic features of English pitch accents are Fo and duration for the native speaker and Korean speakers altogether, (2) Seoul dialect speakers uttered English pitch accents more similarly to the English native speaker than the other dialect speakers and (3) Korean speakers generally have difficulties in pronouncing L* accents. It appears that Korean speakers have more problems in pronouncing L* accents than H* accents.

  • On this study. Constructed the system detecting the reflective acoustic waves from the solid-samples using the 3MHZ focused-acoustic transducer and detected the V(Z) charateristics curves varied by the distance between the focusing position and the solid surface. The results of the experimental detection to various solid materials showed that the materials have their own unique shape of V(Z) curves. This paper suggested the possibility distinguishing the solid characteristics by analysing the V (Z) curves.
