The broadband and discrete sources of sound in small cooling fans of propeller type and centrifugal type were investigated to understand the turbulent vortex structures from many bladed fans using ANSI test plenum for small air-moving devices (AMDs). The noise measurement method uses the plenum as a test apparatus to determine the acoustic source spectral density function at each operating conditions similar to real engineering applications based on acoustic similarity laws. The characteristics of fans including the head rise vs. volumetric flow rate performance were measured using a performance test facility. The sound power spectrum is decomposed into two non-dimensional functions: an acoustic source spectral distribution function F(St,.phi.) and an acoustic system response function G(He,.phi.) where St, He, and .phi. are the Strouhal number, the Helmholtz number, and the volumetric flow rate coefficient, respectively. The autospectra of radiated noise measurements for the fan operating at several volumetric flow rates,.phi., are analyzed using acoustical similarity. The rotating stall in the small propeller fan with a bell-mouth guided is mainly due to a leading edge separation. It creates a blockage in the passage and the reduction in the flow rate. The sound power levels with respect to the rotational speeds were measured to reveal the mechanisms of stall and/or surge for different loading conditions and geometries, for example, fans installed with a impinging plate. Lee and Meecham (1993) studied the effect of the large-scale motions like impinging normally on a flat plate using Large-Eddy Simulation(LES) and Lighthill's analogy.[ASME Winter Annual Meeting 1993, 93-WA/NCA-22]. The dipole and quadrupole sources in the fans tested are shown closely related to the vortex structures involved using cross-correlations of the hot-wire and microphone signals.

The filtered-x LMS(FX-LMS) algorithm has been applied to the active noise control(ANC) system in an acoustic duct. This algorithm is designed based on the FIR(finite impulse response) filter, but it has a slow convergence problem because of a large number of zero coefficients. In order to improve the convergence performance, the step size of the LMS algorithm was modified from fixed to variable. However, this algorithm is still not suitable for the ANC system of a short acoustic duct since the reference signal is affected by the backward acoustic wave propagated from a secondary source. Therefore, the recursive filtered-u LMS algorithm(FU-LMS) based on infinite impulse response(IIR) is developed by considering the backward acoustic propagation. This algorithm, unfortunately, generally has a stability problem. The stability problem was improved by using an error smoothing filter. In this paper, the recursive LMS algorithm with variable step size and smoothing error filter is designed. This recursive LMS algorithm, called FU-VSSLMS algorithm, uses an IIR filter. With fast convergence and good stability, this algorithm is suitable for the ANC system in a short acoustic duct such as the intake system of an automotive. This algorithm is applied to the ANC system of a short acoustic duct. The disturbance signals used as primary noise source are a sinusoidal signal embedded in white noise and the chirp signal of which the instantaneous frequency is variable. Test results demonstrate that the FU-VSSLMS algorithm has superior convergence performance to the FX-LMS algorithm and FX-LMS algorithm. It is successfully applied to the ANC system in a short duct.
This study analyze of reflection wave to Acoustic stimulation on acupoints and contrast parts for objectification of the meridian substance. In order to verify meridian pathway and channel theory of bio-energy in body. It was analyzed response characteristic of reflection waves after acoustic stimulation by sound wave of 5 specific tones. The response characteristics of reflection are measured by the average current magnitude of meridian. The current variation ratio are Live Meridian(gung) 33.2%, Heart Meridian(sang) 30.7%, Kidney Meridian (gak) 33.1%, Spleen Meridian(chi) 33.9%, Lung Meridian (wo) 30.7% compare with contrast parts (non-acupoint and meridian). Therefore meridian is distinguished to non-meridian and 5 vital meridians have relationship with sound wave of 5 specific tones.

This is an investigation on the propagation characteristics of AE signal in GIS. The selection of measuring position and resonant frequency of AE sensor is one of the most important factor to optimize a diagnostic system. And natural frequency and harmonic response characteristics are indispensable to optimize those factors. So, in this investigation, we make a 3D model of 362kV GIS and make a modal and harmonic analysis to survey the vibro-acoustic property. Through the result of the analysis, we can make a further understanding on the vibro-acoustic characteristics of GIS.
Conventionally, we have used an acoustic microscope at single operating frequency. The resolution and quality of the measured images are determined by transducer of the microscope. In this paper, we have studied Vertical Resolution Enhancement with Acoustic Reflection Microscope using combining bases of support for SFR(Spatial Frequency Response). Increased Vertical resolution can be obtained by taking three-dimensional images at more that one frequency and numerically combining the results. As results of the experiment, we could get enhanced images with the rate of contrast in proportion to the changing rate of depth.
A structural modification technique for reducing structure-borne noise of vehicles using a sensitivity analysis is suggested. To estimate the noises generated by the vibration response, a semi structure-acoustic coupling analysis was exploited. As a result of the coupling analysis, severe noise generating positions are identified whose vibrations should be cured through structural modifications. Formulation for the sensitivity analysis of those severe vibration responses with respect to the design changes is derived to enhance the vibration response. Special attention is given in this paper to the use of the experimentally measured vibration responses in the sensitivity analysis. As a result of the proposed method, the structural modifications can be peformed accurately by using experimental data instead of using the finite element method though the higher vibration modes are considered as long as the vibration measurement and acoustic mode calculations are accurate. Effectiveness of this method was examined using an example model by experiments.

In this study, the acoustic transducer of a thin circular disc-type with PZT/Metal was designed. The dielectric and piezoelectric properties of $0.5wt\%$$MnO_2$ and NiO doped 0.1Pb($Mg_{1/3}$$Nb_{2/3}$)$O_3$-$0.45PbTiO_3$-$0.45PbZrO_3$ ceramics were investigated aiming at acoustic transducer applications. The vibration characteristics for the laminated circular plate was analyzed for the various thickness and diameter of the piezoceramic layer and metal layer. The acoustic characteristics which is radiated from the acoustic transducer within the finite space was simulated using the finite element method. It has been observed that the characteristics of the sound pressure ard impedance response calculated for the various models of the size and geometry of acoustic transducer.

A multilevel acoustic Fresnel lens (MAFL) for the ultrasonic imaging transducer of which center frequency is approximately 5.MHz was newly designed and fabricated. The phase level of the lens was 64, and the focal length and the aperture width were 30.mm and 11.mm, respectively. The characteristics of impulse response, acoustic field and imaging performance of the transducer attached the lens were compared with the transducer attached a conventional refraction type acoustic lens (RAL). The results show that the center frequency, the loop sensitivity, and the focal depth of the MAFL transducer were higher or larger than those of the RAL transducer by approximately 0.2.MHz, 1.4.dB, and 2.mm, respectively. Consequently, it was shown that the brighter acoustic images with higher lateral resolution and the increased imaging performance for deep targets can be obtained by using the MAFL transducer.

This study investigates the vibro-acoustic characteristics of an automotive brake drum given free boundaries using the hybrid approach combining numerically obtained structural properties with analytical solution for acoustic radiation. Structural vibrations of the drum are investigated with the finite element method, and modal displacements on the outer surfaces of the drum are idealized as simple mathematical expressions. Based on the expressions, modal sound radiations of the drum are calculated using the Rayleigh integral method. Structural and acoustic responses of the drum for a harmonic excitation are obtained from above results using the modal expansion technique. The results are confirmed with numerical analyses using the boundary element method. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the vibro-acoustic characteristics of a brake drum can be accurately investigated with the process used in this study. Also, many noise and vibration problems in drum brake can be addressed using the procedure proposed in this study.
