A hybrid composite material has many potential usage due to the high specific strength and the resistance to fatigue, when compared to other composite materials such as fiber reinforced plastic(FRP) and metal matrix composite(MMC). However, the fracture mechanism of hybrid composite material is extremely complicated because of the bonding structure of metals and FRP. In this study, Al 7075 sheets and carbon epoxy preprags were used to fabricate the hybrid composite. Recently, nondestructive technique has been used to evaluate the fracture mechanism of these composite materials. AE technique was used to clarify the microscopic damage behavior and failure mechanism of A17075/CFRP hybrid composite. It was found that AE paralneters such as AE event, energy and amplitude were effective to evaluate the failure process of Al 7075/CFRP composite. In addition, the relationship between the AE signal and the characteristics of fracture surface using optical microscope was discussed.
Vibration condition monitoring at low rotational speeds is still a challenge. Acoustic emission (AE) is the most used technique when dealing with low speed bearings. At low rotational speeds, the energy induced from surface contact between raceway and rolling elements is very weak and sometimes buried by interference frequencies. This kind of issue is difficult to solve using vibration monitoring. Therefore some researchers utilize artificial damage on inner race or outer race to simplify the case. This paper presents vibration signal analysis of low speed slewing bearings running at a low rotational speed of 15 rpm. The natural damage data from industrial practice is used. The fault frequencies of bearings are difficult to identify using a power spectrum. Therefore the relatively improved method of empirical mode decomposition (EMD), ensemble EMD (EEMD) is employed. The result is can detect the fault frequencies when the FFT fail to do it.
An intensity-based optical fiber vibration sensor is applied to detect and evaluate damages and fiber failure of composites. The optical fiber vibration sensor is constructed by placing two cleaved fiber end, one of which is cantilevered in a hollow glass tube. The movement of the cantilevered section lags behind the rest of the sensor in response to an applied vibration and the amount of light coupled between the two fibers is thereby modulated. Vibration characteristics of the optical fiber vibration sensor are investigated. Surface mounted optical fiber vibration sensor is used in tensile and indentation test. Experimental results show that the optical fiber sensor can detect damages and fiber failure of composites correctly.

A smart material is used as spectacle frames and brassiere frames, and partly in medical supplies because of its shape memory effect. The smart composite can be used on the wing of an airplane instead of the existing aluminium to control crack propagation. In this study, the smart composite was fabricated by a hot press method. TiNi alloy as reinforcement and A16061 as matrix were used, respectively. The mechanical properties of the smart composite under thermal shock cycles were evaluated. In addition, Acoustic Emission techniques were also used to clarify the damage behavior of the smart composite under thermal shock cycles nondestructive.
The performance of slider of a hard disk drive affects the durability of the system. Particularly, the flying ability of the slider is critical in terms of surface damage and head crash. In this work, the take-off characteristics of the slider for various types of laser zone textured bump geometries were investigated. Also, the effect of ambient pressure on the flying characteristics of the slider was experimentally observed. An index of air density which can be used as a parameter for evaluating the flying characteristic is introduced.
Structural health monitoring (SHM) is a new technology that will be increasingly applied at the industrial field as a potential approach to improve cost and convenience of structural inspection. Recently, the development of smart sensor is very active for real application. This study has focused on preparation and application study of SAL sensor. In order to detect elastic wave, smart piezoelectric sensor, SAL, is fabricated by using a piezoelectric element, shielding layer and protection layer. This protection layer plays an important role in a patched network of distributed piezoelectric sensor and shielding treatment. Four types of SAL sensor are designed/prepared/tested, and these details will be discussed in the paper. In this study, SAL sensor can be feasibly applied to perform structural health monitoring and to detect damage sources which result in elastic waves.

CFRP plates has been established as an effective method for rehabilitation and strengthening of concrete structures. The CFRP reinforcements are bonded to beams and slabs using structural adhesives. Adhesive strength can be affected by environmental exposure. During freezing-and-thawing cycling, temperature-induced stresses in the adhesive layer, due to differential thermal expansion between the CFRP and the substrate concrete, may lead to bond damage and contribute to or cause premature CFRP composite separation. This paper presents the results of experimental program undertaken to investigate the effects of freeze-thaw cycling (from -18 to $4^{\circ}C$) on the behavior and failure characteristics of RC beams strengthened in shear with CFRP plate using acoustic emission (AE) technique.
