  • In this paper, topology optimization of two-dimensional acoustic lenses is presented by using the phase field method. The objective of the optimization is to maximize the acoustic pressure at a specified domain inside the acoustic domain for a given frequency, and the constraint is imposed on the amount of the material of the acoustic lens. Topology optimization of two-dimensional acoustic lenses are obtained as the steady state of the phase transition described by the Allen-Cahn equation. The Helmholtz equation modeling the wave propagation is solved by using a finite element method. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by applying it for several two-dimensional acoustic lens system design problems.

  • In this paper, the author proposes a new method for acoustic radiation optimum design to minimize noise from a vibrating panel-like structure using a collaborative population-based search method called the particle swarm optimization algorithm(PSOA). The PSOA is a parallel evolutionary computation technique initially developed by Kennedy and Eberhart. The acoustic radiation optimization method based on the PSOA consists of two processes. In the first process, the acoustic radiation analysis by an integrated p-version FEM/BEM, which was developed by using MATLAB, is performed to evaluate the exterior acoustic radiation field of the panel. The second process is to search the optimum design variables: 1) Shape of Bezier curves and 2) Shape and position of ribs, to minimize noise from the panel using the PSOA. The optimization method based on the PSOA is compared to that based on the steady state genetic algorithm(SSGA) in order to verify the effectiveness and validity of the optimal solution by PSOA. Finally, it is shown that the optimal designs of the panel obtained by using the PSOA can achieve effective reductions in radiated sound power.

  • In the design of the metal forming processes, various types of ductile fracture criteria are used to predict crack initiation and to fabricate metallic products without any defects. However, the quantitative measurement method for determination of crack initiation is insufficient. It is very difficult to detect crack initiation in ductile metals with excellent deformability because no significant load drop is observed due to crack generation. In this study, the applicability of acoustic emission sensors, which are commonly used in facility diagnostics, to measure crack initiation during the metal forming process was analyzed. Cylindrical notch specimens were designed using the finite element method to induce a premature crack on the surface of pre heat-treated steel (ESW90) material. In addition, specimens with various notch angles and heights were prepared and compression tests were carried out. During the compression tests, acoustic emission signal on the dies and images of the surface of the notch specimen were recorded using an optical camera in real time. The experimental results revealed that the acoustic emission sensor can be used to detect crack initiation in ductile metals due to severe plastic deformation.

  • The BEM is a highly efficient method in the sense of economical computation. However, boundary integration is not easy for the complex geometry and moving surface, e.g. a rotating blade. Thus, Kirchhoff surface is designed in an effort to overcome the difficulty resulting from complex boundary conditions. A Kirchhoff surface is a fictitious surface which envelopes acoustic sources of main concern. Acoustic sources may be distributed on each Kirchhoff surface element according to their acoustic characteristics. In this study, an axial fan is assumed to have unsteady loading noise as a dominant source. Dipole sources can be modeled to solve the FW-H equation. Acoustic field is then computed by determining Kirchhoff surface on which near-field is implemented, to analyze the effect of Kirchhoff surface on it. The optimal shape and the location of Kirchhoff surface are discussed by comparing with experimental data acquired in an anechoic chamber.

  • Launch vehicles are subject to airborne acoustic loads during atmospheric flight and these effects become pronounced especially in transonic region. As the vibration due to the acoustic loads can cause malfunction of payloads, it is essential to predict and reduce the acoustic loads. In this study, a complete process has been developed for predicting airborne vibro-acoustic environment inside the payload pairing and subsequent noise reduction procedure employing acoustic blankets and Helmholtz resonators. Acoustic loads were predicted by Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) analysis and a semi-empirical model for pressure fluctuation inside turbulent boundary layer. Coupled vibro-acoustic analysis was performed using VA One SEA's Finite Element Statistical Energy Analysis (FE-SEA) hybrid module and ANSYS APDL. The process has been applied to a hammerhead launch vehicle to evaluate the effect of acoustic load reduction and accordingly to verify the effectiveness of the process. The presently developed process enables to obtain quick analysis result with reasonable accuracy and thus is expected to be useful in the initial design phase of a launch vehicle.

  • This study investigates vibro-acoustic characteristics of a short, thick cylinder containing a slot given a pined-free boundaries. Using the finite element analysis results, structural modes of the asymmetric cylinder (with a slot) are expressed as the linear combinations of modes of the symmetric cylinder made of same material with identical geometry except the slot. Based on synthesized modal vibrations, acoustic modes of the asymmetric cylinder are obtained with two approaches, i.e., Rayleigh integral calculation and modal expansion of the acoustic modes of the symmetric cylinder. Also, acoustic powers, max. sound pressure and directivity pattern are obtained from acoustic modes and verified with the boundary element analyses. Based on these results, the accuracy of proposed approaches in calculating the vibro-acoustic properties of a short, thick, asymmetric cylinder has been confirmed. The procedure can be applied to the similar cylinders with other boundaries or asymmetric properties. Also, attenuation of vibration and/or sound radiation of the cylinder type practical components can be studied using these approaches.

  • Mmulti-domain noise analysis method using Power Flow Boundary Element Method(PFBEM) has been developed successfully. Some applications are introduced. several examples. PFBEM is a numerical analysis method formulated by applying Boundary Element Method(BEM) to Power Flow Analysis(PFA). PFBEM is very powerful in predicting noise level in medium-to-high frequency ranges. However there are restrictions in analyzing the coupled structures and multi-media. In this paper, an analysis method for multi-domain acoustic problems in the diverse acoustic fields is suggested. And the developed method is applied to the car interior and exterior multi-domain noise analysis.

  • The characteristics of radiation impedance are analyzed by algorithms which consists of Finite Element Method (FEM) and Hybrid type Infinite Element Method. The changes of radiation impedance for piston source according to the size and the material properties of baffles are studied. The results of the radiation impedance for rigid finite baffle coincide with other reports. The more the material properties of baffle that comes across the acoustic medium, the more the calculation results of radiation impedance approach the ones without baffle. Therefore, these results can be applied to the design and the radiation characteristics analysis of acoustic transducers.

  • Most naval underwater weapon system can be simplified to a circular cylindrical structure which has vibrating machineries inside. In order to predict efficiently the total acoustic radiation power of cylindrical structure, surface velocity is measured and radiation efficiency of surface element is calculated. Then, they are substituted to the surface pressure in the simplified Helmholtz integral equation which assumes acoustic far-field and plane-wave approximation at the surface. Surface velocity and total acoustic radiation power for a submerged cylinder are measured in water-tank. In this example, it is found that total acoustic power output obtained from the prediction is in good agreement with that of measurement in mid-high frequency range.
