3D seismic data processing methods such as full waveform inversion or reverse-time migration require 3D wave propagation modeling and heavy calculations. We compared efficiency and accuracy of a Xeon Phi coprocessor to those of a high-end server CPU using 3D frequency-domain wave propagation modeling. We adopted the OpenMP parallel programming to the time-domain finite difference algorithm by considering the characteristics of the Xeon Phi coprocessors. We applied the Fourier transform using a running-integration to obtain the frequency-domain wavefield. A numerical test on frequency-domain wavefield modeling was performed using the 3D SEG/EAGE salt velocity model. Consequently, we could obtain an accurate frequency-domain wavefield and attain a 1.44x speedup using the Xeon Phi coprocessor compared to the CPU.

In this study we have developed a hyperspectrum imaging system for highly sensitive and effective imaging analysis. An optical setup was designed using acoustic optical tunable filter (AOTF) for high sensitive hyperspectrum imaging. Light emitted by mercury lamp gets split in to diffracted and undiffracted beams while passing though AOTF. GFP transfected HEK-293 cell line was used as a model for in vitro imaging analysis. Cells were first, analyzed by fluorescence microscope followed by flow cytometric analysis. Flow cytometric analysis showed 66.31% transfection yield in GFP transfected HEK-293 cells. Various images of GFP transfected HEK-293 cell were grabbed by collecting the diffracted light using a CCD over a dynamic range of frequency of 129-171 MHz with an interval of 3 MHz. Subsequently, for in vivo image analysis of GFP transfected cells in mouse, a whole-body-imaging system was constructed. The blue light of 488 nm wavelength was obtained from a Xenon arc lamp using an appropriate filter and transmitted through an optical cable to a ring illuminator. To check the efficacy of the newly developed whole-body-imaging system, a comparative imaging analysis was performed on a normal mouse in presence and absence of Xenon arc irradiation. The developed hyperspectrum imaging analysis with AOTF showed the highest intensity of green fluorescent protein at 153 MHz of frequency and 494 nm of wavelength. However, the fluorescence intensity remained same as that of the background below 138 MHz (475 nm) and above 162 MHz (532 nm). The mouse images captured using the constructed whole-body-imaging system appeared monochromatic in absence of Xenon arc irradiation and blue when irradiated with Xenon arc lamp. Nevertheless, in either case mouse images appeared clearly.

The noise itself that affects the sensor array is defined as the noise which happens in the place where the system is installed and the circumference noise which comes from the ocean. The array structure for detecting acoustic signal in the underwater effected turbulent layer flow noise. In this paper to design the conformal array spectral density function was introduced and several cases of flow induced noise which affect transfer function were simulated. Modified Corcos wall pressure model was used as turbulent boundary layer flow noise. The effect of noise has been reduced as integrated sum of transfer function has been reduced by decreasing elastomer thickness and density when kx is in low wave number area. Also the characteristics of transfer function by Corcos wall pressure displayed the product of frequency density function. This simulation results can be applied to the conformal array design in unmmaned underwater vehicle in the near future.

Aluminium Foam Sandwich (AFS) panels are becoming always more attractive in transportation applications thanks to the excellent combination of mechanical properties, high strength and stiffness, with functional ones, thermo-acoustic isolation and vibration damping. These properties strongly depend on the density of the foam, the morphology of the pores, the type (open or closed cells) and the size of the gas bubbles enclosed in the solid material. In this paper, the vibrational performances of two classes of sandwich panels with an Alulight(R) foam core are studied. Experimental tests, in terms of frequency response function and modal analysis, are performed in order to investigate the effect of different percentage of porosity in the foam, as well as the effect of the random distribution of the gas bubbles. Experimental results are used as a reference for developing numerical models using finite element approach. Firstly, a sensitivity analysis is performed in order to obtain a limit-but-bounded dynamic response, modelling the foam core as a homogeneous one. The experimental-numerical correlation is evaluated in terms of natural frequencies and mode shapes. Afterwards, an update of the previous numerical model is presented, in which the core is not longer modelled as homogeneous. Mass and stiffness are randomly distributed in the core volume, exploring the space of the eigenvectors.
In this paper we analyzed the localization error of near-field detection algorithm in the sea. The near-field detection algorithms using triangulation and wavefront curvature basically assume a signal in two dimension of bearing and range. But the assumption causes localization error because there is three dimension of bearing, range, and depth in the sea. Even through three dimensional effect is considered, the localization error is occurred if multipath propagation in the sea is ignored. To analyze the localization error in the sea, we simulate the near-field localization using acoustic propagation model and focused beamforming considering wavefront curvature. The simulation results indicate that localization error always occurs in the sea and the error varied with sound velocity profile, water depth, bottom slope, source range, etc.
The goal of using numerical methods in this study is two-fold: to replicate a set of measured, individualized HRTFs by a computer simulation, and also to visualise the resultant sound field around the head. Two methods can be wed: the Boundary Element Method (BEM) and the Infinite-Finite Element Method (IFEM). This paper presents the results of a preliminary study carried out on a KEMAR dummy-head, the geometry of which was captured with a high accuracy 3-D laser scanner and digitiser. The scanned computer model was converted to a few valid BEM and IFEM meshes with different polygon resolutions, enabling us to optimise the simulation for different frequency ranges. The results show a good agreement between simulations and measurements of the sound pressure at the blocked ear-canal of the dummy-head. The principle of reciprocity provides an effect method to simulate HRTF database. The BEM was also used to investigate the total sound field around the head, providing a tool to visualise the sound field for different arrangements of virtual acoustic imaging systems.
Active sonar has been commonly used to detect targets existing in the shallow water. When a signal is transmitted and returned back from a target, it has been distorted by various properties of acoustic channel such as multipath arrivals, scattering from rough sea surface and ocean bottom, and refraction by sound speed structure, which makes target detection difficult. It is therefore necessary to consider these channel properties in the target signal simulation in operational performance system of active sonar. In this paper, a monostatic active sonar system is considered, and the target echo, reverberation, and ambient noise are individually simulated as a function of time, and finally summed to simulate a total received signal. A 3-dimensional highlight model, which can reflect the target features including the shape, position, and azimuthal and elevation angles, has been applied to each multipath pair between source and target to simulate the target echo signal. The results are finally compared to those obtained by the algorithm in which only direct path is considered in target signal simulation.

Experiments with premixed flames in a tube have been conducted to investigate the transition phenomenon from a laminar flat flame to turbulent motions. To induce this phenomenon, a flat flame is formed in a tube. Then, the local velocity at the center of the flat flame surface is increased using $CO_2$ laser irradiation. The deformed flame front propagates with an increase in the total flame surface and oscillating instability. Eventually, the flame front accelerates explosively, and it shows turbulent flame motions with a strong noise. The dynamic behaviors of the flame front prior to the turbulent motions are analyzed in this study to elucidate this process. The physical model of the process is presented according to observations.

This paper presents an analysis of feature extraction methods used for distinguishing the speech of patients with cleft palates and people with normal palates. This research is a basic study on the development of a software system for automatic recognition and restoration of speech disorders, in pursuit of improving the welfare of speech disabled persons. Monosyllable voice data for experiments were collected for three groups: normal speech, cleft palate speech, and simulated clef palate speech. The data consists of 14 basic Korean consonants, 5 complex consonants, and 7 vowels. Feature extractions are performed using three well-known methods: LPC, MFCC, and PLP. The pattern recognition process is executed using the acoustic model GMM. From our experiments, we concluded that the MFCC method is generally the most effective way to identify speech distortions. These results may contribute to the automatic detection and correction of the distorted speech of cleft palate patients, along with the development of an identification tool for levels of speech distortion.
Moon jellyfish Aurelia coerulea are highly abundant off the coast of Tongyeong, Korea. We measured the density of A. coerulea in this area using a scientific echosounder at frequencies of 38 and 120 kHz, and then applied a distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) model to calculate the target strength of the echosounder at each frequency. Then, we used the frequency difference method to extract jellyfish echo signals and estimate the A. coerulea density. A. coerulea was evenly distributed throughout the water column; the backscattering strength ranged from -75 to -65 dB. In May and August, the A. coerulea densities at survey lines 3 and 4 were estimated at 1.5-1.6 and 0.2-0.9 g/m2, with mean weighted densities of 1.04 and 0.48 g/m2, respectively. In September, the A. coerulea densities estimates in Jaran Bay and Goseong Bay were 0.6-2.1 and 0.1-0.4 g/m2, with mean weighted densities of 1.25 and 0.24 g/m2, respectively.
