This paper focuses on the numerical prediction of airflow-induced sound in DVD drives. As a first step, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is conducted to evaluate flow field characteristics due to the high-speed disk rotation, and to support the acoustic analysis. Acoustic analogy based on Ffowcs Wi1liams-Hawkings (FW-H) equation is adopted to predict aeroacoustic noise patterns. The integral solution for quadrupole volume source is included to identify the turbulence noise generated inside the DVD tray. The strength of sound pressure revel with respect to rotating speed is discussed to meet upfront demand on the high fidelity product development. The present study also focuses on the noise directivity and examines how much the sound noise is sensitive to change in rotating speed. Near-field noise is strongly affected by the flow field characteristic, which is caused by the complex shape of the tray. For a mid-field, the quadrupole noise play as a counterpart of thickness noise or loading noise, so it generates different sound noise Patterns compared with those in the near field.
The effect of field annealing on the velocity changes of magneto surface acoustic wave (MSAW) devices has been investigated for deposited $(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_{89}Zr_{11}$ (x = 0~1.0) amorphous films. By means of two step field annealing at $195^{\circ}C$ for 10 minute in the magnetic field of 130 Oe, the MSAW device with x=0.4 film among the devices showed the superior velocity change of 0.1 %. This gigantic value was obtained in the DC bias field of 40 Oe at the exciting frequency of 8.7 MHz. It was confirmed that such behavior was due to the variation of differential permeability caused by an optimal stress within the magnetic film.
This paper shows the use of wavelet transformation combined with inverse acoustics to reconstruct the surface velocity of a noise source. This approach uses the boundary element analysis based on the measured sound pressure at a set of field points, the Helmholtz integral equations and wavelet transformation for reconstructing the normal surface velocity field. The reconstructed field can be diverged due to the small measurement errors in the case of nearfield acoustic holography (NAH) using an inverse boundary element method. In order to avoid this instability in the inverse problem, the reconstruction process should include some form of regularization for enhancing the resolution of source images. The usual method of regularization has been the truncation of wave vectors associated with small singular values, although the order of an optimal truncation is difficult to determine. In this paper, a wavelet transformation is applied to reduce the computation time for inverse acoustics and to enhance the reconstructed vibration field. The computational speed-up is achieved, with solution time being reduced to $14.5\%$.
A computationally-efficient approach to the calculation of the transient field of an acoustic radiator was developed. With this approach, a planar or curved source, radiating either continuous or pulsed waves, is divided into a finite number of shifted and/or rotated versions of an incremental source such that the Fraunhofer approximation holds at each field point. The acoustic field from the incremental source is given by a 2-D spatial Fourier transform. The diffraction transfer function of the entire source can be expressed as a sum of Fraunhofer diffraction pattern of the incremental sources with the appropriate coordinate transformations for the particular geometry of the radiator. For a given spectrum of radiator velocity, the transient field can be computed directly in the frequency domain using the diffraction transfer function. To determine the accuracy of the proposed approach, the impulse response was derived using the inverse Fourier transform. The results obtained agree well with published data obtained using the impulse response approach. The computational efficiency of the proposed method compares favorably to those of the point source method and the impulse response approach.
Acoustic identification of inner materials in a single-layer cylindrical shell is investigated with acoustic resonance theory. The theoretical resonance peak frequencies for a cylindrical shell are little affected by the density variation, but remarkably changed by the sound speed variation of inner materials. Such acoustic dependency can be utilized to identify inner materials in a cylindrical shell. Acoustic resonance spectrogram for a single-layer cylindrical shell is theoretically plotted as functions of normalized frequency and sound speed of inner materials. The inner materials can be acoustically identified by overlapping acoustic resonance peaks from measured backscattering sound field on the spectrogram. To experimentally confirm this method, backscattering sound field of cylindrical shell filled with water, oil or ethylene glycol was measured in water tank. The inner materials could be identified by acoustic resonance peaks of the backscattering sound field monostatically measured with a transduce of 1.05 MHz center frequency.
Centrifugal fans are widely used and the noise generated by these machines causes one of the most serious problems. In general, the centrifugal fan noise is often dominated by tones at BPF(blade passage frequency) and its higher harmonics. This is a consequence of the strong interaction between the flow discharged from the impeller and the cutoff in the casing. However, only a few researches have been carried out on predicting the noise because of the difficulty in obtaining detailed Information about the flow field and casing effects on noise radiation. The objective of this study is to develop a prediction method for the unsteady flow field and the acoustic pressure field of a centrifugal fan, and to calculate the effects of small vanes that are attached in original impeller - Splitter impeller. We assume that the impeller rotates with a constant angular velocity and the flow field around the impeller is incompressible and inviscid. So, a discrete vortex method (DVM) is used to model the centrifugal fan and to calculate the flow field. The force of each element on the blade is calculated by the unsteady Bernoulli equation. Lowson's method is used to predict the acoustic source. The splitter impeller changes the acoustic characteristics as well as performance. Two-splitter type impeller and splitter impeller which splitter locates in jet region are good for acoustic characteristics.

This study presents the reconstruction of sound field radiated from an automotive engine using equivalent sources. Basic concept of the method presented is to replace the engine noise source with elementary sources of multipoles, e.g., monopoles and dipoles. The so-called Helmholtz equation least-squares (HELS) method can reconstruct the sound radiation fields from spherical geometries in a series expansion of spherical Hankel functions and spherical harmonics. In this paper, multi-Point, multipole equivalent sources are employed to reconstruct the sound field radiated from an automotive engine with a fixed rotation speed. To ensure and improve the accuracy of reconstruction, the spatial filters of multipole coefficients and wave-vectors are adopted for suppressing the adverse effect of high-order multipoles. Optimal filter shapes are designed with regularization parameters minimizing the generalized cross validation (GCV) function between actual and reproduced model. After regeneration of field pressures using the proposed method as many as necessary, the vibro-acoustic field of an engine could be reconstructed by using the BEM-based near-field acoustic holography (NAH) technique in a cost-effective manner.

Acoustic Target Strength (TS) is a major parameter of the active sonar equation, which indicates the ratio of the radiated intensity from the source to the re-radiated intensity by a target. This research provides the time pattern of TS in time domain, which is applicable to pulse modulated acoustic pressure field. If the time pattern of TS is predicted by using TS equation in frequency domain, it takes long time and difficult since time function pulsed acoustic wave may be decomposed into their frequency domain components. But TS equation in time domain has a convenience. If the expression for pulsed acoustic field has been obtained, the problem can be solved. Furthermore this paper introduces about mathematical equivalence quantities between EM wave and Acoustic Wave.
Acoustic characteristics in an industrial gas-turbine combustor are numerically investigated by a linear acoustic analysis. Spatially non-homogeneous temperature field in the combustor is considered in the numerical calculation and the characteristics are analyzed in view of acoustic instability. Acoustic analyses are conducted in the combustors without and with acoustic resonator, which is one of the acoustic-damping devices or combustion stabilization devices. It has been reported that severe pressure fluctuation frequently occurs in the adopted combustor, and the measured signal of pressure oscillation is compared with the acoustic-pressure response from the numerical calculation. The numerical results are in good agreement with the measurement data. In this regard. the phenomenon of pressure fluctuation in the combustor could be caused by acoustic instability. From the numerical results for the combustor with present acoustic resonators installed, the acoustic effects of the resonators are analyzed in the viewpoints of both the frequency tuning and the damping capacity. It is found that the resonators with present specifications are not optimized and thus, the improved specification or design is required.
The substructure synthesis method is used for making it easy to analyze vibration systems generally in vibration field. In the past, this method has been to be used mainly because of shortage of computer memory and CPU time. But recently this method is used for analyzing complex structure or identifying the characteristics of systems precisely. The purpose of this study is to develop acoustic substructure synthesis method that can be applied to acoustic modal analysis of complex acoustic systems. Acoustic modal analysis method to be introduced here is a method that analyze acoustic natural mode shape of the complex acoustic system by the principle of CMS(component mode synthesis method). This paper describes the acoustic modal analysis of the acoustic finite element model of simple expansion pipe by acoustic substructure synthesis method. The resutls of acoustic modal analysis analyzed by Acoustic substructure synthesis method and the results by FEM(finite element method) shows good agreement.
