  • It is very important to obtain a high quality of bone image for an accurate ultrasonic measurement of bone mineral density. In this study, we suggested a technique to acquire an optimal image by adapting an acoustic lens and a properly selected ultrasonic probe. Also, we have applied an image processing algorithm with which automatically makes a decision of brightness and contrast of image by generating threshold level, a composition of ultrasonic data, an elimination of noise using modified median filter, and a real time interpolation. We could confirm much improved resolution of bone image with acoustic lens attached to the ultrasonic probe and with the image processing algorithm suggested in this study. Therefore, it became possible to precisely diagnose the osteoprosis using ultrasonic imaging technique.

  • Vibration analysis is widely used in machinery diagnosis and the wavelet transform has also been implemented in many applications in the condition monitoring of machinery. In contrast to previous applications, this paper examines whether acoustic signal can be used effectively along vibration signal to detect the various local fault, in local fault of gearboxes using the wavelet transform. Moreover, envelop analysis is well known as useful tool for the detection of rolling element bearing fault. In this paper, a acoustic emission (AE) sensor is employed to detect gearbox damage by installing them around bearing housing at driven-end side. Signal processing is conducted by wavelet transform and enveloping to detect her fault all at once gearbox using AE signal.

  • It is well known that when there is an acoustic mismatch between the speech obtained during training and testing, the accuracy of speaker verification systems drastically deteriorates. This paper presents the use of MFCCs' histogram enhancement technique in order to improve the robustness of a speaker verification system. The technique transforms the features extracted from speech within an utterance such that their statistics conform to reference distributions. The reference distributions proposed in this paper are uniform distribution and beta distribution. The transformation modifies the contrast of MFCCs' histogram so that the performance of a speaker verification system is improved both in the clean training and testing environment and in the clean training and noisy testing environment.

  • The devoicing vowel is a phonological process whose contrast in sonority is lost or reduces in a particular phonetic environment. Phonetically, the vocal fold vibration originates from the abduction/adduction of the glottis in relation to supraglottal articulatory movements. The purpose of this study is to investigate Korean vowel devoicing by means of experimental instruments. The interrelated laryngeal adjustments and aerodynamic effects for this voicing can clarify the redundant articulatory gestures relevant to the distinctive feature of sonority. Five test words were selected, being composed of the high vowel /i/, between the fricative and strong aspirated or lenis affricated consonants. The subjects uttered the test words successively at a normal or at a faster speed. The EMG, the sensing tube Gaeltec S7b and the High-Speech Analysis system and MSL II were used in these studies. Acoustically, three different types of speech waveforms and spectrograms were classified, based on the voicing variation. The intraoral air pressure curves showed differences, depending on the voicing variations. The activity patterns of the PCA and the CT for devoicing vowels appeared differently from those showing the partially devoicing vowels and the voicing vowels.

  • The prosodic properties of Korean and English stress were examined with focus on syllable duration and pitch by loan words. 14 loan words were selected by the criteria of the numbers of syllables and stress positions. 3 Korean males using Seoul dialect and 3 American males using general American English served as subjects. Each tokens were uttered 3 times and second one was chosen to be analysed by CSL. We measured the duration and F0 of each syllable. In English, duration is the most salient acoustic correlates of stress, and pitch is the second. In Korean, by contrast, it seems that neither duration nor pitch is the acoustic features of stress, from our data

  • This paper proposes class histogram equalization (CHEQ) to compensate noisy acoustic features for robust speech recognition. CHEQ aims to compensate for the acoustic mismatch between training and test speech recognition environments as well as to reduce the limitations of the conventional histogram equalization (HEQ). In contrast to HEQ, CHEQ adopts multiple class-specific distribution functions for training and test environments and equalizes the features by using their class-specific training and test distributions. According to the class-information extraction methods, CHEQ is further classified into two forms such as hard-CHEQ based on vector quantization and soft-CHEQ using the Gaussian mixture model. Experiments on the Aurora 2 database confirmed the effectiveness of CHEQ by producing a relative word error reduction of 61.17% over the baseline met-cepstral features and that of 19.62% over the conventional HEQ.

  • The present study aims to investigate the feasibility of using a simple nonlinear acoustic method for the assessment of bone status and osteoporosis in trabecular bone. Correlations of linear and nonlinear ultrasound parameters with the apparent bone density were obtained in 32 bovine femoral trabecular bone samples. Highly significant positive correlations were observed between the apparent bone density and the two linear ultrasound parameters, the speed of sound (SOS) and the normalized broadband ultrasound attenuation (nBUA), with Spearman's correlation coefficients of r = 0.85 and 0.77. In contrast, the apparent bone density was found to be negatively correlated with the nonlinear ultrasound parameter introduced in the present study, the logarithmic difference between the power spectrum levels of the fundamental frequency and the second harmonic (PSL1-PSL2), with the highest correlation coefficient of r = -0.92. These results suggest that the PSL1-PSL2, in addition to the SOS and the nBUA, may be useful for the assessment of bone status and osteoporosis.

  • The English word-final /rl/ cluster poses a particular problem for Korean learners of English because it is the sequence of two sounds, /r/ and /l/, which are not contrastive in Korean. This study compared the similarity distances between English and Korean speakers' /rl/ productions using the dynamic time warping (DTW) algorithm. The words with /rl/ (pearl, world) and without /rl/ (bird, word) were recorded by four English speakers and four Korean speakers, and compared pairwise. The F2-F1 trajectories, the acoustic correlate of velarized /l/, and F3 trajectories, the acoustic correlate of /r/, were examined. Formant analysis showed that English speakers lowered F2-F1 values toward the end of a word, unlike Korean speakers, suggesting the absence of /l/ in Korean speakers. In contrast, there was no significant difference in F3 values. Mixed-effects regression analyses of the DTW distances revealed that Korean speakers produced /r/ similarly to English speakers but failed to produce the velarized /l/ in /rl/ clusters.

  • We examined the dB difference in target strength at multiple frequencies (ΔTS) for the identification of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) and ice krill (Euphausia crystallorophias) using a stochastic distorted-wave Born approximation model. Our investigation focused on ΔTS patterns at multiple frequencies in relation to size, along with key acoustic properties influencing TS, including density and sound speed contrast, fatness, and orientation. The findings revealed that the orientation and fatness significantly affect the ΔTS patterns. The results provide insight into the importance of the multi-frequency technique for estimating krill biomass and their ecological interactions with environmental features in the Southern Ocean.
