Using Acoustic Liner for Fan Noise Reduction in Modern Turbofan Engines

  • With the increase in global air travel, aircraft noise has become a major public issue. In modern aircraft engines, only a small proportion of the air that passes through the whole engine actually goes through the core of the engine, the rest passes around it down the bypass duct. A successful method of reducing noise further, even in ultra-high bypass ratio engines, is to absorb the sound created within the engine. Acoustically absorbent material or acoustic liners have desirable acoustic attenuation properties and thus are commonly used to reduce noise in jet engines. The liners typically are placed upstream and downstream of the rotors (fans) to absorb sound before it propagates out of the inlet and exhaust ducts. Noise attenuation can be dramatically improved by increasing the area over which a noise reducing material is applied and by placing the material closer to the noise source. In this paper we will briefly discuss acoustic liner applications in modern turbofan engines.

Development of a muffler for the super heavymachinery in the 70 ton class (70톤 급 초대형 중장비용 머플러 개발)

  • In this study, a muffler for the super heavy machinery in the 70 ton class is developed. Developing process relies on experimental and rule of thumb approach. Various muffler internal structures consisting of partition plates, perforated and non-perforated through pipes, and absorbent are tried and compared for the transmission loss performance. Based on the experimental results, the best combination and locations of the internal acoustic components which affects the muffler performance are determined.

A Study on Performance Improvement of Light and Low-Noisy Standing Grinder with Vacuum Dust Collection Using a Cyclone Separator (사이클론을 활용한 경량.저소음 진공집진 스탠딩 그라인더의 성능개선에 관한 연구)

  • A standing grinder with a vacuum dust collection, which works grinding a surface and collecting dust occurred simultaneously, is needed to clean the surface before painting, or to remove a weld bead burr in the industrial field. In recent it trends to be compact and potable with high grinding and dust collection power, and low noise. As increasing these grinding and dust collection power, the noise and weight of standing grinder occurs an important problem. To solve these problem, an efficient cyclone separator was designed and developed by Ansys-CFX analysis and experiments. A weight of the developed grinder part was 5.9kg, which can be easily handled on standing by workers. and a noise level of the developed prototype was measured 69.9 dB(A).
