  • The oils of Acorus gramineus, Cinnamomum sieboldii, Eugenia aromatica, and Inula helenium were tested for their acaricidal activity against Dermatophagoides farinae and D. pteronyssinus. Responses varied according to dose and mite species. As compared to the oils, the oil most toxic to D. farinae and D. pteronyssinus was E. aromatica, followed by C. sieboldii, A. gramineus, and I. helenium. On the basis of $LD_{50}$ values of the oils in A. gramineus, C. sieboldii, and E. aromatica, the compound most toxic against D. farinae and D. pteronyssinus was eugenol congeners (isoeugenol>eugenol>acetyleugenol) followed by benzyl benzoate, salicylaldehyde, safro1, DEET, cinnamyl alcohol, and 3-carene. As a naturally occurring acaricide, these oils and eugenol congeners could be useful as new acaricidal agents against Dermatophagoides spp.

  • Hanon made in the largest maar crater in Korea, is the only paddy field ecosystem in Jeju Island that has been conducting rice farming, for the past 500 years. Flora surveys were conducted eight times, 2015-2018, to understand floristic characteristics and a restoration plan of the study area. As a result, vascular plants of Hanon paddy fields were listed 225 taxa that consist of 55 families, 151 genera, 194 species, 1 subspecies, 25 varieties, and 4 forms. The taxonomic group including the most species, was Gramineae (36 taxa). The next families were Compositae (29 taxa), Cyperaceae (20), Leguminosae (13), and Polygonaceae (11). Biological type of the Hanon was $Th-R_5-D_4-t$ type. The rare plants revealed 3 taxa; Ottelia alismoides(L.) Pers., Acorus calamus L., Pseudoraphis ukishiba Ohwi. Endemic plant revealed 1 taxon; Saururus chinensis(Lour.) Baill. Forty three taxa were naturalized plants composed of 15 families, 24 genera, 41 species, and 2 varieties. The urbanization index and naturalized index were 13.3% and 16.9%, respectively. The Hanon has high plant diversity, including endemic plant and rare plants, and is the only rice paddy in Jeju Island. So, the Hanon has sufficient values in ecological and socio-cultural aspects, so it should be maintained continuously in the future.

Five taxa of Korean endemic plants such as Clematis brachyura Maxim., Viola seoulensis Nakai, Populus ${\times}$ tomentiglandulosa T. B. Lee, Forsythia koreana (Rehder) Nakai and Hemerocallis hakuunensis Nakai were collected. Endangered wild plants designated by the law called 'Protection Law for Endangered wild fauna and flora' were one taxon. The red list plants according to IUCN valuation basis were examined for 13 taxa; endangered (EN) species of Prunus yedoensis Matsum., Vulnerable (VU) species of both Utricularia pilosa (Makino) Makino and Iris ruthenica var. nana Maxim., Near Threatened (NT) species of Senecio argunensis Turcz., Least Concern (LC) species of Platycladus orientalis (L.) The floristic regional indicator plants found in this area were a total of 47 taxa comprising three taxa of grade V, four taxa of grade IV, nine taxa of grade III, 10 taxa of grade II, and 21 taxa of grade I. The naturalized plants were identified as 62 taxa and the percentage of naturalized index (NI) was 9.9 % and the percentage of urbanization index (UI) was 19.3 %, respectively. Furthermore, hemicryptophytes (28 %), therophytes (26 %), hydrophytes (13 %) and geophyte (12 %) showed high proportional ratio in life form spectrum.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the physiological and structural damages to cadmium (Cd) in Acorus calamus var. angustatus as a native aquatic species in Korea. In addition to the physiological responses such as plant growth, photosynthesis, and root activity, the structural damages in leaf and root tissues were observed through light and scanning electronic microscopy. The five-leaf plants were treated with different Cd concentrations 0, 10, 25, and 50 ${\mu}M$ for 15 days. The plant damages to Cd were significant at 10-25 ${\mu}M$ Cd physiologically and at 25-50 ${\mu}M$ Cd structurally. The physiological damages in the shoot part (photosynthesis) started at 10 ${\mu}M$ Cd whereas those in root part (root activity) were serious above 25 ${\mu}M$ Cd. On the other hand, the structural damages began at 25 ${\mu}M$ Cd in the leaf and root tissues similarly, but the plant tissue destruction was more serious in the roots than in leaves. Based on the plant physiological and structural damages, 10 ${\mu}M$ was assumed to be the limited concentration for sustainable growth and landscaping ability in Acorus calamus var. angustatus to Cd.

  • Fiftythree species(35 families and 52 genera)of Korean medicinal plants which have been frequently used in oriental herb prescriptions or have been used as folklorics were evaluated on their short term acute toxicity and potential antitumor activities against P-388 murine lymphocytic leukemia model in vivo. Among these plants Acorus gramineus (Araceae), Agrimonia pilosa (Rosaceae), Aralia elata (Araliaceae), Dryopteris crassirhizoma (Aspidiaceae), Syringa reticulata (Oleaceae) and Calystegia japonica (Convolvulaceae) exhibited potent acute toxicity resulting from severe weight loss and death. Agrimonia pilosa (Rosaceae) showed about 33% of increased life span in comparison with that of control group mouse, but others exhibited no significant antitumor activities.
